Corporal Punishment by Spanking in Children Corporal punishment is hared way for children. According to Carol Bower, in the article "Positive Discipline and a Ban on Corporal Punishment Will Help Stop Cycles of Violence." parents rely on corporal punishment on their children because violence is an acceptable way to solve problems. “The data showed that 57% of parents with children under 18 used corporal punishment, and 33% used severe corporal punishment in the form of beatings” (Bower). Many parents chose to use corporal punishment on children by giving harsh spankings. This research paper will show the corporal punishment against children by Spanking. Corporal punishment is inhumane and goes against human rights. Parents must not use corporal punishment on their children, so parents have to define the best way to avoid corporal punishment by using a nonviolent way of discipline. Corporal punishment is used in bad way by parents. According to CNN, in the article "Physical Punishment Doesn 't Help, It Hurts” if children get punishment from their parents, it is harder for them to interact with society and it can also lead to potentially dangerous psychological issues. After that parents cannot find solution to avoid it. “Corporal punishment teaches that violence is an appropriate response to problems or frustrations with people and that can lead to a cycle of violence and victimization in the child 's future
Corporal Punishment helps kids learn better because it is a quick punishment that you can get over fast so you can go back to class. It’s better than other punishments such as suspension, because if you get suspended you “miss school and you also miss instructions”(source B ) and you can not do your work.
A recent study shows 70 percent of parents believe it is right to discipline a child through physical means. Most commonly, parents will spank their children but being hit with things like belts or other objects happens as well. Parenting methods haven’t changed much with time and discipline in similar no matter the country. With more studies out to find the most effective method of parenting and discipline it’s coming to attention whether or not physical harm is the best way to teach children. Parents want what is best for their children, so it is important to constantly bring up and question methods commonly accepted in the past. One method that is becoming more controversial is spanking children. Though it is still considered normal to do, it is gaining more traction and more studies are being done to find the problems it causes. Checking on parenting methods can be difficult as everyone is raised differently. It is also difficult to test which forms of punishment lead to certain outcomes. However, there is a trend of negative effects from hitting. Gershoff acknowledges, “several national professional organizations have called on parents to abandon spanking as a child rearing practice and for professionals to recommend disciplinary alternatives to spanking.” Spanking children is a terrible discipline method as it has negative effects.
Corporal Punishment Corporal Punishment of children breaches their fundamental human rights it’s legality in the majority states worldwide. Corporal punishment has been a big problem for a very long time. Many people disagree with corporal punishment and so do I.Physical punishment should not be allowed in schools,it can create violence in kids,it is another abusive act,and kids get robbed from their full learning potential. Physical punishment can provoke violence in kids, and bullying can start just from physical punishment.
In some culture corporal punishment is seen as to do with regaining honour, so children don’t take the act to heart as much as in western civilization, causing them to not have mental issues in the future The line between corporal punishment and abuse, is when there are physical marks left and/or the reasoning is excessive for the misbehaviour (3) The only benefit of corporal punishment is immediate obedience Those who were corporally punished are more likely to abuse their spouses and children than the average person Most cases of corporal punishment cause a rift between the child and parents, when the child is more mature
Living in the twenty-first century you rarely ever see someone spank their child or hear the word spank come out of a parent’s mouth. I see too many parents today that are too self-righteous to “spank” their children, because many people see spanking as form of abuse. Many parents in today’s world use more reasonable punishments for their misbehaving children. Some parents put their children in time-outs, deny them of their freedom, take toys away and ground them. I have seen parents use these methods because there are more reasonable ways of punishing their child for being disobedient. However, not everybody in today’s world uses these methods for punishing children; some parents use the act of spanking for punishment. Spanking was a popular punishment back in the 1900s, but is a very debatable topic in today’s society.
“The Committee on the Rights of the Child in the General Comment No. 8 defines corporal punishment as, “any punishment in which physical force is used and intended to cause some degree of pain or discomfort, however light. Most involves hitting (“smacking”, “slapping”, “spanking”) children, with the hand or with an implement” (unicef website). Corporal punishment has been used in schools as a method of discipline and as a form of punishment for committing a crime. Some people will say that corporal punishment is no different from physical abuse, because your intending to cause some degree of pain or discomfort. However from my personal experience I went to an elementary school where they were allowed to spank the children as long as the child’s parents had signed an approval form. So needless to say if I ever got sent down to the principles officer for acting out or being bad my parents gave the principle permission to spank me. I believe that there is a difference between corporal punishment and physical abuse. Corporal punishment is a method of disciplining a child or person for acting out or for committing a crime, whereas physical abuse is causing nonaccidnetal physical injury for no apparent reason. My parents raised me to know that if I did something bad I was bound to get a “butt whooping” so I knew that if I did the same thing
While reading Cleverley & Phillips ' Visions of Childhood I found that many views of the past relating to corporal punishment have changed significantly. During my readings I read things that instantly stood out to me. The first being how many issues and their solutions revolved around religion. John Wesley, was the founder of the Methodist Movement, and he believed that children were born with sin and that it was the parental duty to discipline the unruly child, starting at an early age. During this time period, corporal punishment was a common practice. Wesley used reference to the Bible verse in Proverbs to declare, “Spare the rod, spoil the child”, (Cleverly and Phillips, 1986) in turn parents believed they were doing God’s will with their harsh punishments.
Yelling in public, crying over the smallest things, throwing a tantrum every five minutes; all these things have the same solution, which is spanking. People think spanking is a way to raise their children. Spanking is used among parents to teach their children a lesson if they act in a way they are not supposed to act. Some parents use spanking as a way to discipline, a way to teach the child a lesson, or it can be a natural thing in their household. The method of spanking as child rearing has caused some controversy about whether spanking negatively influence a child’s future behaviors and actions. The practice of spanking can later reflect their violent behavior as they get older. Children can easily misunderstand the message behind spanking and unknowingly use it the same way as their parents. Children can, therefore, use the method of spanking toward their new upcoming urge for violence or bad behavior. All of their future actions are now reflecting what they learned in their few years as a baby; they have learned the pain and method of spanking. It is only natural for them to use what they learned in their future. While the method of spanking for child rearing is used among many families, it is important to know whether this practice of spanking is effective in a beneficial way or if it is a definite way to create a child who has a violent behavior. It is better to know whether spanking is favorable in a child’s rearing years, rather than to use the
We will find in the spanked kids a physical and verbal form of aggression against others: classmate, family members, friends etc… it is like an expression of all frustration accumulated by spanked and frustrated child. Another study published in the Akron Law Review examined criminal records and found that children raised where a legal ban on parental corporal punishment is in effect are much more likely to be involved in crime. When kids and spanked or abuse in their childhood are spanked, they develop a hatred. The immediate consequence in their adolescence is physical aggression. It is the most common in the adolescent behavior and are likely to result in physical injury. The most extreme form of violence is a homicide. Thus, fights involving weapons and fights by teenagers old enough to be able to inflict serious injuries are what see in the street every day. So finally spanked kids destroy them more than it help them to behave as parents would like to. It is why it is better to choose a different way to help kids to understand and to learn what is acceptable and what is not. In fact Dozens of countries have banned parental corporal punishment, such as Germany, Italy, and in 2007 New Zealand, which use force to correct children causes complete criminal penalties, and where the mother cannot even legally take the hand of her child to bring it where it refuses to go. And according to Krisha McCoy, discipline is a way of teaching children the restraint and values necessary to become competent and independent adults. When our child behaves negatively, the best way to teach him the positive behavior should be for example to explain what is wrong in his behavior, then explain or show with examples what is better to do. Also and the explanation of the reasons of positive behaviors regarding others, environments, society, laws, rules. And the consequences of “not doing this way” or of “doing
Corporal punishment in these days has been becoming a topic in many old timers talks. Many believe that it helps and is definitely the way to go. The older generations still seem to believe that society would be better off if kids still got punished the way they did. They refuse to ignore data that has not supported the clams they bring up about making children better behaved or as they call it “Straightening them up”. Many believe that our liberal democracy population has views that are not valid and that the old ways need to come back to help us grow.
The world has changed in many different ways, but there are still things that need to be changed for the better. Corporal punishment is one of those things. All around the world, corporal punishment is affecting children in many ways. It is described as a form of discipline that hurts a child in a way and is used both in homes and schools. It has been going on for years upon years and very few people try to stop it. People believe corporal punishment is good for children, but there have been so many negative outcomes that other people argue against it. Although some people believe that corporal punishment helps improve a child’s behavior, corporal punishment should not be used because it could be used excessively and it is ineffective.
The second reason why spanking should not be done to children is the fact that it is a form of child abuse. At the moment, countries are divided as to legalize corporal punishment or create a law saying it is illegal. In the book written by Abela (2007) for the Council of Europe, she notes that “spanking of children less than two years old increases the risk of severe physical injury and the child is unlikely to understand the connection between behavior and punishment.” Most parents tend to go overboard when disciplining their children, especially when they are very angry and have not subdued their anger. This then makes the child their venting medium to get rid of that anger and sometimes, they do not apologize and even forget why they have done the deed. Other parents tend to make this a habit and even if the child did nothing wrong, they would still continue spanking the child. Eventually, the parents may slowly abuse the child through pain and totally make the child’s life a complete hell. As a result, child becomes frail and suffers psychological problems. Some countries, especially social services, use this as grounds to get the child away from the family and file cases of child abuse and physical injury that can lead to jail time if proven guilty. Spanking may also cause scarring and may be with the child
In the past, parents have spank their children. They always did this to get the kids to start respecting them and their althorty. Back then, kids was to afraid to misbehave because they do not want to get punished. Parents knows it good for the kids to get punished, so that they learn the real world will not put up with their attitude. Now of days, parents do not want to punish them because is is abuse. Some say that it will cause mental problems in the future. They also want them to love them forever. The question that the world has “Is is okay to punish our children?”
It is a common enough scene, something you have probably experienced with your own children countless times. They are being loud, fighting, or just generally doing something they are not supposed to be doing. So you spank them. Maybe even yell. You’re frustrated, at your whit’s end. You just want them to stop, want them to learn and make better choices. Only, after spanking them, their behavior worsens. The effect you thought spanking them would have is not working. They act out more, get more aggressive. A debate has risen, as scenarios such as this become more talked about. Some say corporal punishment is damaging psychologically and negatively impacts childhood development. So the question has to be asked: “Is spanking bad?”
Corporal punishment is wrong because it causes long-term negative effects on students. If a student receives a paddling as a punishment it could cause serious problems for that student mentally and physically. One example of this is in an article called Should Corporal Punishment Be Used in K-12 Schools?. It says “frequent use of corporal punishment leads to a higher risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, stress, and other mental health”. These would be dangerous for a child’s health. In serious cases this could even lead to suicidal thoughts. Not only can corporal punishment affect a child's mental health, it can also have an affect on their performance in school. Another example from an article says, “Students who experience corporal punishment in
