Copernicus and Galileo
The chosen sources are considerably based on Copernicus and Galileo which further reflects the comparison and contrast between both the well-known personalities. However, the first selected source is "Dedication of the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies to Pope Paul III”, analyzed and constructed by Nicolaus Copernicus, 1543. Whereas, the second source is “Science and Scripture” by Galileo, 1957. The first source is a primary study. This source is produced by Nicolaus Copernicus. “I still believe that one must avoid theories altogether foreign to orthodoxy”, (p. 1) This observations are related to the results of the study and it does not make any opposed argument. Additionally, when considering the second source, the major point on the study is the conflict between science and religion. The study reflects a scriptural argument, where he argues about the salvation. Similarly, it has a theological argument that in such assessments it is quite proper to pay no attention to scriptural assertions. The source is trying to peruse the argument against the Copernican system. The writer’s tone throughout the study changes to some extend and it was not noticed as sharp or too much controversial. The source is making an astronomical observation and further argued to oppose. The organization of the argument was effective and helpful.
In the first source the usage of words are difficult and typical which might create problem in terms of understanding the concept and specific meaning of those used in scientific and philosophical terms for individuals who does not belong to the similar field. The author employs words such as ecclesiastical state. The effect of these words are the difficulty in understanding and observing the concepts. Whereas, the second source as a study’s author has used understandable words which have clear meanings along with the effective meanings. His more relaxed viewpoint on the interpretations of the Bible and scripture allowed him to accept the Copernican theory. He even justified his stance through principals. The first principle was called biblical limitation. “I should judge that the authority of the Bible was designed to persuade men of these articles and propositions which, by science, or by any other means than through the very mouth of the Holy Spirit.” This principle overall explained that the bible could only be understood and interpreted correctly by the Holy Mother Mary. This gave a justification against claims from previous scholars such as St. Aquinas and St. Augustine. These two scholars took ideas for the overall argument from interpretations of the Bible made from either themselves or those before them. Therefore, Galileo believed that the interpretations were false. This allowed for science to not come in conflict with Catholicism as no one truly understood it. Another principle was the priority of physical demonstration. This principle stressed more on the empirical evidence before scriptural evidence. For this principle, Galileo focused primarily on nature and this allowed him to protect the concept of the Copernican theory from the bible. When it comes to theories and law’s concerning the movement of stellar bodies and why the universe is moving the way it is and how it came to be, data is continuously being added and revised. It is through this constant revising of theories and establishing of laws that core ideas are proven, with modern day scientists expanding knowledge for the rest of us. One of the earliest pioneers of spatial theories was the Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei, who used the theories of those who came before and he learned from to paint a better picture of the way the universe was set. True to form, he dealt with accusations of heresy and resistance to his ideas from others during his life, which today are held as being before his time.
There are many reasons on why I think the list colony of Roanoke disappeared. My first assumption was loss of food and went out searching for food to eat so they wouldn't die. My second assumption is that they died from disease. My third assumption is that they didn't have clean water and they had to search for clean water to drink. my forth assumption is that they got lost looking for clean water or food. “Men who were grounded in astronomical and physical science were persuaded as soon as they received my first message…” (30). Others took longer to come to terms with Galileo’s work due to how different it was from what they had come to believe. And, some were so stuck in their ways that they refused to look at the evidence and denied the truth at all cost.

In “Towards a New Heaven: Revolution in Astronomy,” some of the greatest achievements of the Scientific Revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth century were dominated by medicine, mechanics, and astronomers. Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton were some of the brilliant individuals that magnified the revolutionary astronomy. These astronomers challenged the conception and beliefs through the nature of the external world.
There were many who cited portions of scripture such as Joshua 10:13, which states “So the Sun stood still in the midst of heaven” (Joshua 10:13), and Isaiah 40:22, which states “he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.” (Isaiah 40:22), as pieces of holy evidence to refute and definitely disprove the heliocentric theory as truth. However, Galileo could not easily be written off as a rambling, heretical madman either, seeing as his theories were first proposed by Nicolaus Copernicus, who was “not only a Catholic, but a priest and a canon.” (Galileo, Letter to Christina, 2) Even if Galileo was not a respected member of the Church, Copernicus was, and if his theories had originally been proposed by a Catholic canon, then it was harder to dismiss his ideas as heretical. Additionally, Galileo himself frequently offered to present others with evidence of the truth of his theories, stating “to the leading philosophers of the faculty here…I have offered a thousand times of my own accord to show my studies…” (Galileo, Letter to Kepler).

Due to that, many philosophers have tried to search for a way to reconcile the differences in harmony. The author then shifted his focus on Galileo case and explain that the main point in Galileo case (on sun-center the universe but not the earth-center as the church interpreted from the bible), was to seek for the knowledge of nature and Bible in harmony but in not in conflict. He further explain that Galileo was in support of the view that bible teaches on salvation, that is how to go to heaven, but not how the heaven go. There are lots of intriguing information about NASA’s space probe, Galileo. Galileo’s mission was a very valuable. The results of the mission have been very beneficial to NASA. The technology of the spacecraft was phenomenal.
Sin, secrets, guilt, and shame are unfortunate occurrences that every person will encounter during a period of their life. The shame inflicted upon an individual will lead them down a difficult path, however in the end it will result in new knowledge and lessons essential for life. Nicolaus Copernicus, a great mathematician, and Astronomer introduced the idea of a heliocentric universe, which now is one of the important movements of the time. Back when he was alive, he harbored this idea away for the fear of the hatred and death his idea would bring upon him. As the church was the power and anything that went against said power was turned away. Hatred, hostility, resentment would fall upon you and worst of all death. Another important figure in the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei. He was an Italian born professor of mathematics who had a great interest in the workings of the universe. Galileo served as a professor at the University of Padua, and it was during this time that he began to question the accuracy of the Churches representation of the world. Galileo’s approach towards knowledge was much different then the afore mentioned Copernicus. Where as Copernicus presented his finding to the mercy of the church, Galileo wrote his conclusions and left the Roman Catholic Church interpret them as they chose. The very nature of his findings pitted him as an opponent of the church.
The Catholic Church played an important role at the time when all the works in which the movement of the earth was admitted, Catholics were forbidden to teach, and even read, the Copernican theories. The “Copernican Theory” modeled some problems of enormous importance for Christian’s obviously theological nature. Leaders like Martin Luther and John Calvin told us that Scripture brandished against Nicolaus Copernicus and provoked repression against its followers, but generally abandon the fight Protestantism once the “Theories of Copernicus” were confirmed with indisputable evidence. In this paper, I will first evaluate the history about how “Copernican Theory” and its model of the earth came into existence. I will also analyze the “Copernican Theory” in light of Churches idea of the earth being flat. I will ultimately argue that Nicolaus Copernicus played an important role in the history of Philosophy of Science.
