Tattoos are the newest controversy throughout the world. Anywhere a person looks they can find tattoos or at least something about tattoos. When someone turns on the television they can even find tattoo shows such as Ink Master or Miami Ink. Tattoos are so popular now and days that they are almost as mainstream as the iPhone (Leonard). Even though tattoos are becoming more and more common society still views tattoos as unprofessional and troubling. Society believes that tattoos are for the delinquents of our society but in reality having or not having tattoos does not contribute to the amount of illegal things a person does. Just because someone has a few tattoos does not make them a scary person to be around. With the increase of tattoos I …show more content…
Businesses today majorly frown upon visible tattoos on their coworkers and actually do not hire people if they have visible tattoos that they are not able to cover up. Not hiring someone because of a few tattoos is like not hiring someone because they are of different skin or because of their gender. When someone is not hired because of their race, religion, or gender it is called discrimination but when someone isn’t hired because of how they chose to express themselves is totally acceptable in our society. What many employers do not realize is tattooed individuals could actually increase the sales a business does. It has actually been discovered that tattooed sales representatives are more trusted by tattooed customers (Foltz). Tattooed individuals are more likely to want to deal with tattooed representatives because they know that society can be very judgmental but other people with body art will not judge. If people have their arms covered in tattoos it is very easy to cover them but there are side effects to having someone cover their tattoos. If someone is working somewhere that requires them to always sanitize their hands before they touch anything that sanitization could easily be affected. Some cover ups actually prevent the proper washing of their hands (Foltz). I would much rather have someone with visible tattoos dealing with my food then having someone that covers up their tattoos causing them to not be properly sanitized. Tattoos are so normal in today’s society that if employers choose to not hire someone based off them they might not actually be hiring the best person for the job (Boyle). If I was an employer I would much rather have a tattooed individual that is the best person for the job rather than hire someone that is a clean canvas but isn’t the right fit to work for me. Despite how some companies are against hiring tattooed people, Ford Motor Company and Zappos have a new policy that
Tattoos are becoming very popular amongst the people of my generation, but now they seem to be creating more buzz than ever when it comes to today’s job market. Jon Kelly and Rachel Hennessey wrote articles covering this topic presenting the views of employers and their policies against tattoos. In both articles, they discuss how employers frown upon the art of employees inking. The biggest reason is because, some employers feel that tattoos deliver an unprofessional look to the customer and that can ruin the image built and portrayed by their prosperous companies.
Tattoos have been around for quite some time now, and they have always been a symbol of belonging, cultural expression or for religion. These days, individuals choose to tattoo themselves because it is part of their lifestyle or personal image. While continuing to grow in popularity and becoming a lifestyle, people are facing issues with having visible tattoos in the workforce. Although it is a form of free expression, employers have a right to enforce certain rules about tattoos in their company because they have a public image to uphold. How you present yourself to the public is solely important, which is why tattoos should not be allowed to be seen in the workplace, since it may appear offensive or unconservative.
To start, some people think that tattoos give a bad impression and keep people from getting a job. However, "Johhn Challenger, the CEO of a consulting firm, says that the majority of employers look more at prospective employees' skills versus their appearance." This shows that tattoos do not have a great impact on public perception.
Bridget Flynn, her article, “Do tattoos work against you?”, tattoos can work against job applications, on what is telling about tattoos are considered acceptable in some places, but others like to work in offices are very difficult to have a job in there. Sometimes people with tattoos can have a job like from offices or more important stuff, because they have a good study, and also experiences for work wherever they want to do. Others have really hard to find a job, but that’s why they just not have experiences, and they think is for them tattoos but isn’t. People can have a tattoo and they still have a great job.
Often times people with tattoos are viewed as punk, alternative troublemakers, overly aggressive ideals or just a lain stupid decision. Many say that they are just a plea for attention. My grandmother is against all tattoos she says that “they are trashy and that they will not look good when the person is in their later years”. While my mother says that “[tats] hard to hide” and is partially against them because “they do not pertain to a business persona”. My grandmother on one hand is just a stubborn and bullheaded 80 year old woman, but on the other hand she does have a point tattoos have to be maintained if not they can fade into a blotchy faded mess. Mom has been in management for the past 20 years or so, and knows how closely companies and future employers look at applicants appearance. Often times if tattoos are out in the open and if they pertain to an abstract or taboo subject the person will most likely not get the
Considering the Fox fashion News report there may be a number of possibilities as to people would actually like tattoos on their bodies or not. I am not very fond off tattoos and I am sure that if my Avalon or any other coworkers shows a tattoo to me, even though I will appreciate the other person on their face so that they do not feel bad, but deep in my heart I would really lose respect for the same person. I have seen some very weird kinds of tattoos and I feel real pity for those who ruin their skins for these useless tattoos. In my opinion tattoos are not a great way of conveying the message to the world, and in the professional field a person has to look at for himself so as to avoid any kind of conducts that would cause threat to their employment.
People who have tattoos or piercings should not be denied jobs. For an example, the persons tattoos or piercings may define their characteristics or personality. A person may have a tattoo sleeves that symbolizes a band, a family member or an object that they like. Piercings however can be all over a person’s body and they might like the placements of their piercings. At this point, discussions between the customers and employees on tattoos and piercings are being made. These discussions can range between “Why did the person decide to get a tattoo or piercing?” or “Does the employee really think they are going to qualify for the job because of those things?” According to Andrea Johnstone and Laurel Buskirk, editors of an article called “Tattoo, body piercings rules can lead to discrimination claim,” the reason why companies have policies that ban tattoos, piercings and other body modification is to maintain a dress code and other appearance requirements (29A). If tattoos define an employee’s characteristics or personality and can be used as a discussion topic between the employee and customers, then people who have tattoos
Although there are people who are quick to judge and view tattoos in a bad light, there are also the people who keep an open mind and see it for the art that it is. Tattoos have become an up and coming trend leaving employers less likely to have tattoos. Many employees, being the heart of the modern day generation, have tattoos due to the increasing trend.
Today in America there is less problems having tattoos in the work place. As tattoos proliferate, some employers’ are becoming more accepting of body ink peeking through work place attire but the level of acceptance varies depending the industry and the corporate cultural. The work force is more interested in your educational skills and skills for the job. Tattoo policies can vary from one office to the next the argument being that tattoos and certain hair do’s or certain garments can be a very big distraction to many coworkers and customers. Depending on how visible and how offensive the tattoo is. When it comes down to tattoos in the workplace it just really come
Many employers try not to hire people with tattoos especially as sales representatives. Studies have showed that people with tattoos that are interested in what is sold would gravitate more towards a sales representative with tattoos. As a female with tattoos, I can say that I have personally seen the difference in the way that people may treat me because of my body modifications. Even with body modifications studies may show that the more tattoos and piercings the more deviant the person. I cannot truly agree with this. Tattoos in the tattoo wearer’s eyes are more of a creative freedom or an art form.
Vigeland writes, “a study conducted by careerbuilder.com found that thirty-seven percent of HR managers cite tattoos as the third physical attribute most likely to limit career potential” (Vigeland, 2012, para. 3). The key to obtaining a job when a person has tattoos is to get an impression of the workplace and to obtain information about the perspective employer on their personal policies. That way a person will know whether they should apply for the position or not. There are jobs where tattoos do not affect a person being hired. A few of those jobs are in construction, music, the automotive industry, film making, athletics, styling or the military. It appears most
People argue that tattoos should never be shown in a professional setting. Most places of employment even have a dress code that requires you to cover them while working. Employers, in some settings, say that tattoos would or could be offensive or obscene. It was hard to find any article that was against tattoos in the workplace. After a while of searching the internet and databases, I found an article titled “Tattoos in the Workplace: The Research Forbes Was Too Lazy To Do” by Annie Singer. Written on February 26, 2016 and updated February 26, 2017, Singer’s research found that “consumers showed a preference for non-tattooed front-line staff.” She also found that “visible tattoos had a predominantly negative effect on employment selection, driven by the hiring manager’s
Since tattoos are sometimes treated as signs of rebellion, non-conformity, immaturity and unprofessionalism, people with a tattoo might be treated differently, especially by potential employers. (This stereotype is however changing in the
As someone that has been in a position of a hiring manager, and someone with tattoos, I have been on both sides of this debate. While I do appreciate that my employer does not require it, I personally keep my tattoos covered most of the time. I want to be judged by my skills and not what someone thinks of my body art. When someone does notice my tattoos, I often get the “Wow, I would have never thought you would have tattoos” comment. I understood many perceptions of me could possibly change when I decided to get tattooed, therefore I chose to get them where they can be easily covered. This has been a personal choice on how to approach this subject. I would be much more comfortable with having them visible; I see them as much a part of me as I do my hair color.
The tattoo is a very old form of body modification, but in spite of that there is still a certain rejection towards those who carry them in a visible area of the body, for some it disfigures what has been created in the image and likeness of God while for others associates this with convicts or gang members mainly because they were one of the first groups to use tattoos to differentiate themselves from the rest of society. But also it is true that there is a very limited understanding about this corporal modification that could be one of the reasons why it can not be appreciated as for how it should be. However, modern society reflects the current popularity of tattooing because it has acquired an entirely artistic meaning to a social expression and a way of identity.
