Controversy occurs all throughout society as people’s attitudes are often reinforced through observational learning and developed even further through implementing stereotypes. The act of persuasion often plays a major role in the development or change in a person’s stance on a particular issue. It can be found that the media often serves as one of the most influential aspects of life, as the mass majority of people are exposed to what is being said in one way or another. In various instances this might be an individual’s only exposure to the topic at hand. This allows for their opinion to be formed largely, if not entirely, on what is being portrayed through the media. One issue in particular that is heavily influenced by the media is the …show more content…
This can be done through the use of stereotyping. The formation of stereotypes allows people to have a general and simplified image of an image or idea of a particular issue (King, 2017). For instance, people often categorize all fraternities and sororities as the same. They see an issue related to hazing, or alcohol abuse and relate it to the entire Greek system. They often never stop to think about how the issue actually occurred due to a small particular group of individuals and not by thousands of others who are a part of Greek Life. To be fair, this may be the only details that the individual may have been exposed to, in order to form an opinion on the …show more content…
By only stating opinions, or images showcasing one side of an issue and leaving out various other facts or events that take place, it is relatively easy to influence the view that someone has on a particular situation (McCombs, 2014). If people had a better understanding of how Greek life played into campus involvement and relationships, as well as an increase in grade point average in various institutions, they would likely form an opinion based on this occurrence of events. By leaving this information out, the media is able to create a negative stigma and persuade the opinion of the public, by elaborating on the negative instances rather than the positive. It is natural for people to start believing is being said to them when they do not have an understanding of the other side. This is a part of the informational social influence as it states people have an influence on others due to their wanting to be right (King, 2017). People often look for ways to relate with one another and want to feel as if they have a common tie or bond to others over a particular
Throughout my exploratory essay, I found that there are many different perspectives when it comes to Greek life. I as a member of Greek life myself, feel that the positive aspects outweigh the negative. There are many positive advantages that come from being a part of Greek life. There are an abundance of networking opportunities that come from Greek life along with all of the incredible friends that you make throughout the recruitment experience. One may also gain leadership skills from being a member of the executive council and having to lead their chapter on a day to day basis. Being a member of Greek life also pushes you to be more involved on campus as well as in the community. Each Greek organization has a philanthropy that they support
Educational Impact of Athletics and Greek Life on College Students When entering the university, the members of community are used to thinking about what it will be like to be a college student. The choice of college is extremely important for everybody`s future, however, more important is to decide what to do in free time, besides studying. It is a common mistake to think that only good marks can make an impact on the future life. Not only attendance of classes and making homework help to become successful and get new knowledge, but also different extracurricular events.
What role have social and cultural values and ideas played in shaping artistic expression from the Greeks to modern civilization? Social and cultural values and ideas played a critical role from the Greeks to modern civilization. Today, I will discuss how social and cultural values played a critical role from the Greeks to modern society. The legacy of Greek culture is significant and continues to influence our culture today. The Greeks introduced our modern civilization to numerous ideas and values.
The development of opinions, attitudes and political values results from the interaction that occurs within the social environment of an individual through contact with family, friends, at school, work and church. Families especially help shape interest in politics and party affiliation while educational institutions encourage support of the political system. The mass media also influences public opinion through newspapers, radio, television and the Internet by reaffirming attitudes and opinions that individuals have already established. According to Doris Graber, author of Mass Media and American Politics, “people do not necessarily adopt the precise attitudes and opinions that earn the media’s praise: rather, mass media information provides the ingredients that people use to adjust their existing attitudes and opinions to keep pace with a changing world” (11). Therefore, the news media focuses the attention of the public on certain issues or individuals, which causes individuals to form opinions on these particular topics.
College can oftentimes be a very overwhelming and an intimidating transition for many nervous, anxious incoming freshmen. Coming from high school, which usually has less than two thousand students, into college which typically has ten times that amount, can cause fear and anxiety within most students. There are many different ways for incoming college students to ease into the transition from high school to college. Joining an on campus organization is a perfect example of doing so. Nine million college students nationwide decide to join the Greek organizations to enhance their college experience (Glass).

Fraternities and sororities are social groups formed in colleges and universities. These fraternities and sororities are called the Greek Life. These clubs use two or more greek letters for their names. Fraternities are for males and sororities are for females. Greek life is very popular in this day and age at universities and colleges. Greek life is very beneficial during and after college. But universities are beginning to ban these clubs. Greek life shouldn’t be banned because it allows for leadership skills, builds chance for success, networking opportunity, and life-long friends.
Growing up my yaya told me contently “Eíste Éllines, ton politismó mas, eínai to palaiótero kai pio agní deíchnoun to páthos, deíchnoun yperifáneia.” Which I quickly learned roughly translates to “You are Greek, you are the best, claim it, be proud.” Being Greek is like being the proudest group of people in the world and telling everyone you meet that you are in fact Greek and because you are Greek almost all Western cultural traditions can be traced back to the Greek—Greece is the birthplace of Western culture and we are proud of it. Now if all you know about the Greek culture is what you have seen from the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” franchise, you are a bit misinformed but that is fine—the franchise did get a few concepts about Greek
The role of media organizations in modern day society has extended far beyond simply informing the public of current affairs. News organizations are now expected to serve as watchdogs, tasked with the responsibility of drawing the public’s attention to controversial issues and practices in all sectors of society. With a reputation of being objective and honest, the media has a profound influence on the thoughts, actions, and perceptions of its audience. By covering an event or issue in a certain light, news outlets are capable of shifting its audience’s attitude in a new direction. Misrepresentation in the media leaves the majority of people believing in the wrong idea, which can reinforce
The Greek culture is very fascinating to me because it is different from other cultures. Greece as a country itself created many discoveries in science, literature, art, and religion. For example, the alphabet we use in derived from ancient Greek alphabet that they derived from the Phoenicians. Greek mythology is still relevant in today's society. Since religion was a big part of the Greek culture people believed that gods were everywhere and they saw over people.
Greek life, made up of sororities and fraternities, is prominent in many universities and colleges throughout the United States. Greek life is on all types of campuses ranging from public to private, and especially Ivy League schools. Those who choose to participate in Greek life have the opportunity to become members of sororities and fraternities specific to gender, religions, races, and even majors. Colleges and universities in the South have strong Greek life with many undergraduate students participating, and at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, twenty percent of undergraduates participate in Greek life. For many, Greek life is an important facet of their college experience. Getting involved in Greek life provides students with many opportunities, such as an expansion of their social circle, involvement in community service, and leadership opportunities. In addition, the students who participate in Greek life are less likely to drop out. While participating in Greek life provides students with benefits, downsides also occur on college campuses. Serious dangers range from hazing to drug and alcohol or abuse, or even sexual assault.
The media in American society has a major influential impact on the minds and beliefs of millions of people. Whether through the news, television shows, or film, the media acts as a huge database for knowledge and instruction. It is both an auditory and visual database that can press images and ideas into people's minds. Even if the individual has no prior exposure or knowledge to something, the media can project into people's minds and leave a lasting impression. Though obviously people are aware of what they are listening to or watching, thoughts and assumptions can drift into their minds without even realizing it. These thoughts that drift in are extremely influential. The massive impact
Researches performed over the years have indicated that media methods such as agenda-setting, priming, and framing are important factors in influencing and shaping of public opinion.
We live in a society that wants the best and expects the best. Colleges all across the United States have fraternities and sororities. With such a large group of unique people, some groups have created a negative stigma to Greek life. I personally believe the reason is Greeks behaving poorly cause this or exhibiting weak morals and poor leadership create this. Sigma Chi needs to be the ringleader of Greek row and be an example to the Greek world. At the University of Utah, we have an Order of Omega Chapter that focuses on improving the stigma of Greek life. The Order of Omega has the potential to be the “shinning light” of Greek row. There are so many negative stigmas attached to fraternities and sororities and the University of Utah needs
one essential conviction, expressed in the word democracy itself: that power should be in the hands of the people. Although democracy today has been slightly inefficient in this idea, with the wealthy, elite class challenging this right, “it nevertheless claims for itself a fundamental validity that no other kind of society shares….” To completely understand the structure of democracy, one must return to the roots of the practice itself, and examine the origins in ancient Greece, the expansion in the Roman Empire, and how these practices combined make what we recognize as today’s democratic government.
