Tackling, checking, tripping, or colliding head first into an opponent is not the only factor into whether or not a sport is considered a contact sport. The most confusing part about understanding what a contact sport is understanding the definition of contact and sport. A contact sport is “a sport in which the participants necessarily come into bodily contact with one another.” This being said there is a lot of confusion with whether or not some sports are considered a contact sport. Clarifying what a contact sport could potentially help parents and athletes understand that some sports are contact and they need to know the difference when joining a sport. A cheerleader fell during a stunt at school and struck her head on a hard floor. During the accident there was not padded flooring provided for the cheerleader, that could have prevented her injury. The athlete filed a negligence action against her teammate and school district. Under a Wisconsin statute which the court had to determine if her teammate was excused from liability. It was concluded that the teammate was in fact excused from liability because they were involved in a contact sport. They made this decision by looking up the words “contact” and “contact sport” in a dictionary and realizing cheerleading has a considerable amount of contact and force contact. The Court also looked into sports that are not contact sports,such as; bowling and skiing and decided that cheerleading is a contact sport because it . The Court also looked at the rules of the National Federation of State High School Association and concluded that cheerleading is a contact sport because it involves physical contact between cheerleaders.
