The athlete filed a negligence action against her teammate and school district. Under a Wisconsin statute which the court had to determine if her teammate was excused from liability. It was concluded that the teammate was in fact excused from liability because they were involved in a contact sport. They made this decision by looking up the words “contact” and “contact sport” in a dictionary and realizing cheerleading has a considerable amount of contact and force contact. The Court also looked into sports that are not contact sports, such as; bowling and skiing and decided that cheerleading is a contact sport because it . The Court also looked at the rules of the National Federation of State High School Association and concluded that cheerleading is a contact sport because it involves physical contact between cheerleaders. I know this firsthand because I was a cheerleader for
In this paragraph I’ll tell you about the pros of playing contact sports. It’s no fun without head butting the ball in soccer or tackling someone in foot ball to obtain the ball or checking someone to score a goal in hockey. Most contact sports related injuries are very minor. Rarely do the major injuries occur. WebMD states “Kids who play contact sports should be moderated and not go to crazy. Your child can avoid these injuries if they take some precautions while playing.” Without checking someone in hockey or tackling someone in football that games would become much boring for the audience and the players. Contact sports are also good if you want to learn how to become a better athlete. In the big leagues and in college contact sports you do tackle and check. It’s better to learn these tactics when you are younger so you can become better are them when you are older. Contact sports should be played by kids 14 and under because the dangers and risks are very rare and often do not occur.
The court also discusses a previous case Pfister v. Shusta that occurred in 1995, which adopted the exception to the standard of care for participants in a contact sport. However, the courts notice that the Pfister case was not working in a contact sport such as hockey. Although the body check from behind did violated a rule, the courts acknowledge that some violations are inherent and is anticipated in certain sports. Therefore in sports such as hockey, football and soccer which contact most likely occur, a participant breaches a duty of care only if they intentionally injuries another

Even the air was trembling. The gym was filled with a mixture of nervous and urgent, and all we need was another basket to break the deadlock. The score was 19-36, nearly 2 minutes left, however, the unstoppable cheering was still there, as well as our spirits. None of the girls on the court gave up, though we were not close to winning; every one of our eyes were blazed sharp and focusing, waiting for another steal or chance to shoot. In brief, before the timer buzzed, we would never give up on our game---which is the most valuable spirit in CCA sports. Our girls basketball game has the power of inspiration, because though they didn’t win, they supported each other with encouragement when difficulties come. All they do is to turn the failures
From a young age, I held a passion for being a part of my future high school’s football team. As a fourth grade girl, I figured the only way to participate in such a way was to become a cheerleader. Attending the mini cheerleading camps filled me with excitement and anticipation of my future as a Reicher Catholic High School cheerleader. However, I later realized my lack of dedication to the sport decreased my likeness towards cheerleading. In sixth grade I spoke up about that realization to my family, who told me about the sports medicine program at Reicher. “The football trainers are considered a part of the team,” said my brother. I quickly set my mind towards becoming a Reicher football trainer of sports medicine instead, becoming absorbed
Many individuals believe that high school contact sports should be prohibited because there are many student athletes that have suffered serious head injuries because of they take part in contact sports. This is a huge concern in terms of the safety of the students participating in these extra-curricular activities, because if the injuries are not treated correctly, it could result in serious brain damage or even death. Although there is one negative factor in participating in contact sports, there are many positive factors for the student athlete such as building life skills, staying away
The ability to tackle properly can lessen the chance of being hurt seriously, whereas using improper techniques can be catastrophic. “According to an article from The New York Times, youth leagues have limited contact in practice time, and have adjusted weight and age limits to try to reduce head injuries and the risks associated with them” (Belson, 2015). Additionally, drills that involved full speed head-on blocking and tackling were eliminated. “According to an article from The Denver Post, many observers highlighted the importance of improving football safety” (Bachynski, 2015). Youth football leagues are taking precautionary action to protect children; nevertheless, injuries are inevitable in a collision sport. While children certainly benefit from participation in team sports, it remains a question whether other sports can offer those same benefits while posing less risk of brain injury than tackle
Sports today are more common than before in previous years. Having a job in the athletic field requires more to it than just understanding the basics of sports. People are more active which helps play a big role in the athletic field because it requires everyone to be more aware of injuries, and learn how to prevent, treat, and diagnose an injury. Athletic trainers do not only help athletes but people who are physically athletic learn how to prevent injuries and stay healthy and fit. Not every day does one encounter the difficulties that an athletic trainer does dealing with small injuries to injuries that keep athletes out of the sports they love for months even years, to even trying to help athletes that do not want to listen .Training
Have you ever felt and noticed the difference when something is given to you versus having to truly work hard for it? Whether it is as simple as saving your own allowance for a year to buy a fishing rod you’ve always wanted or putting every ounce of effort and thought you have into making an “A” for a writing assignment in class. Would you appreciate the fishing rod the same over time if it was just given to you for no reason? Would you feel good about your writing assignment knowing you could have given more effort for that major grade? Believe it or not, over time these types of questions, feelings, and thoughts have led to the rise of Youth Competitive Sports across the United States and made it to where it is a 15 billion dollar industry
Commercial sports prosper in certain types of societies, especially in the United States. This is because we have various commercial sports on an amateur and professional level. In the United States, participants on both levels are apart o a free enterprise. On the amateur level, participants are rewarded with paid college scholarships. They also get exposure to being able to compete on the professional level if they are exceptional athletes. On the professional level, participants not only get high salaries but they also get endorsements and personal platforms. When athletes receive endorsements they get a check for themselves and their team as well. The personal platform they receive gives them a way to promote business ventures they are
Without exposing the players to live action tackling, the safe and correct technique will be lost. Learning how to tackle is compared to learning how to speak a language in the aspect that it is easier to learn at a young age because the information is absorbed with an unconscious mind. Therefore, allowing and teaching kids how to hit is thought of as safer than removing contact and having inexperienced teenagers hit each other when they are above the level of youth football. The danger of hitting incorrectly is that inexperienced players will often dip their head, exposing the crown of their helmet where the most damage can be done. However, there are other ways to teach the craft of tackling without actually doing it. Funded in part by the NFL Foundation, Heads Up Football is a comprehensive program designed to change the culture around America's favorite sport and enhance player safety at the youth and high school level (“Health”). Heads Up Football is being used in thousands of programs across the nation, introducing several drills that discipline players to tackle safely. The program promotes shoulder tackling and teaches the core principles involved, which is the healthy alternative to the frightening scene we often see where players lead with their head and end up concussed. If contact was taken out of youth leagues and there was no other training on how to hit, then yes, it would be more dangerous than allowing them to hit at a young age. Although, with the help of programs like heads up football, it is possible to grasp the ability of tackling without creating risky situations. We must put our trust in youth football coaches across the nation to teach our kids the correct way to
Although participation in all types of sports is on the rise, there are many Americans who participate in contact sports, which is a term used to describe sports that involve any physical contact between players of opposing teams (Montenigro, Corp, Stein, Cantu, & Stern., 2015). Examples of popular contact sports played in America include football, fighting, and ice hockey. While most contact sport athletes will play up until either the high school or collegiate level, there are some that do make it to the professional level; these athletes experience physical contact at all levels of participation (Montenigro et al., 2015). For example, most football players who make it to the NFL start by playing youth football, followed by high school and
The most commonly committed civil wrongs or criminal offences that occur in regards to sports are negligence, battery and assault however, in contact sports forceful physical contact-within the limits of the set guidelines- between players is sanctioned by the rules of play in the respective sports and is implicitly consented to through the action of entering the arena, court, field, track etc. The issue is in what circumstances is the conduct of the player which caused the injury considered to have gone too far outside of the confine of the rules to have legal action taken against them?
