With the media in our hand, it is a huge influence towards the advertising world. Throughout the text, “Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism” Robbins discusses the effects of consumerism on the modern world today. He emphasizes multiple times how the world no longer lives by what they need but rather by they want. Though this has marked a historical global era to Robbins, it is not necessarily a positive effect on humanity. Through the Cold War, America was transitioning in various ways such as the way messages were shared, consumerism, and the constant race against the Soviet Union. During the years 1959-1964, Rod Serling, a New York writer and playwright began using one of the newest inventions, the television, as a way to share his opinion about controversial topics. Consumer culture today is thriving – but not necessarily in a good way. As consumer culture thrives, we have desires for products and services. Consumer spending is a major part of a country’s/world’s economy and that makes the economy strong but the aftermath is an unsustainable lifestyle. John Kavanaugh underscored the point that people in America essentially “follow Christ in a consumer society” (p. 23). This statement, albeit relentless and insulting is sadly, true. We have become profligate slaves to consumerism to the point that we attenuate our good spirit and jettison the imperativeness of simplicity and collective harmony.

In the Dystopian novel by Aldous Huxley, Brave New World, readers are challenged by the thought consumerism. The society of Brave new world and Modern are similar through the manner of consumerism. In modern society, we show many examples of consumerism, in fact myself falls into this category. A consumer society is a post-industrial term used to describe the fact that society is characterised more by what people consume and less by the jobs they do or goods they produce (Hetherington, 2009). As our relationship with consumerism has changed so too have the choices available of why, when, where and how we consume. The first part of this assignment will look at the characteristics of a consumer society, the choices available and identify the divisions created from unequal choices. The second part will consider the role of the Big four supermarkets (TESCO, Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison’s) in providing choice to people.

In Don Delilo’s, White Noise different themes are displayed throughout the novel. Some themes are the fear of death, loss of identity, technology as the enemy, and American consumerism. The society represented in the novel views people as objects and emotionally detached from many things. Death is always in the air and trapped in peoples mind. The culture that’s represented in the novel adds to the loss of individualism, but also adds to the figurative death of the characters introduced in the novel.

As a country, Americans love to shop. Whether in malls, grocery stores, on the Internet, or elsewhere, the culture of buying is deeply ingrained in American culture. The majority of the the U.S. population identify themselves as being within the middle or working class. The socioeconomic group between the lower and upper classes. is much smaller than most think and is starting to decline. The large increase in income have reshaped the American middle class that most claim to be part of. Today’s higher income of the American middle class family comes from the two-parent income. This income is higher of those of past generations, however, over the past generation, the increase in income for the median-earning family have not resulted in an improved lifestyle. The reason for life not improving for America’s middle class is often misconstrued with over consumption or purchasing of unneeded items and services, but these activities are not the case for the middle class non improved quality of life. Revolving debt and the large increase in life’s fixed expenses such as mortgage, health care, and child care, these factors are the main reasons for the increase in income for middle class families not resulting in an improved life quality.

Consumerism is the center of American culture. Americans tend to confuse their wants with their needs. With new advances in technology, as well as the help of advertisers, people are provided with easy access to new products that seem essential to their everyday life, even though they have survived this long without them. People cannot live without food, clothing, and shelter. But realistically, according to people's different lifestyles, more than food, clothing, and shelter are needed. Most people need to work to survive. Unless a job is either in their own home, or within walking distance, a means of transportation is needed. Whether it be a vehicle, money for a taxi-cab, or a token for a ride on the subway, money must be spent
