The Constitution The Constitution was created so one person or group wasn’t able to get too much power. At first, the Articles of Confederation was made. The Articles of Confederation was not working because the central government didn’t have enough power to protect the nation. The Constitution was made in order to hold the states together and the people together, and make sure the government doesn’t gain too much power. The Constitution guards against tyranny. Tyranny is “The accumulation of all powers…in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many” (Federalism Paper #47). Federalism is power divided between central and state government. The state governments can establish schools. The central government can declare war. The state government powers are local and the central government have nationwide powers (Federalism venn diagram). It provides double security by giving both the government and states the same/equal important power, Federalism guards against tyranny because it ensures that two levels share, one can’t accumulate. The Constitution guards against tyranny by having checks and balances. Checks and balances is when each branch of government holds some control over the other two branches. The Executive branch can appoint judges in the Judicial. The Judicial branch can declare laws unconstitutional in Legislative. The Legislative branch can override a veto in Executive. The Constitution was the reason why tyranny was avoided. Separation of powers makes sure the power is equally divided between the branches. Federalism makes sure not one government can accumulate.
