Conservative Behavior And Values During The 1920's

During the 1920s, the United States witnessed substantial changes in society and government that challenged conventions. Many Americans, however, also tried to lessen the effects of these changes through emphasizing the importance of customs and long held beliefs. This era consisted of conflicting progressive and traditional ideas, which influenced American government at the time.

The 1920s was nicknamed the “Roaring Twenties” because every action had a voice. Every event or amendment was supported by some type of individual or group. Certain individuals made opportunity for American citizens, such as Henry Ford. Because of business leaders like him, Americans once confined to their city of work, can now live miles away. This era was full of trial and error. Trial and error can be supported by the fact that a new amendment repealed a past amendment. America was shaped politically by Congress, stereotypes, and mass production. The 1920s wouldn’t be the same without the leading automobile industry, “New Women”, and the Eighteenth Amendment.

That’s what sparked ideas for new inventions and ideas during this time. The 1920s was an era that forever alter America’s perspective on change. There were many new things that happened within the time period. For instance, jazz music became popular, the movie industry was growing, new inventions, the country was finally economically stable, significant changes were happening in women’s lives. There were two major amendments that affected America. The 18th amendment caused controversy and rebellious behavior. As a nation coming out of a devastating war, America faced many changes in the 1920s. It was a decade of growth and improvements. As immigrants fled from Europe, the economy improved, and new machines offered convenience and luxury from the kitchen to the streets. However, with all change comes opposition. The 1920s revealed a conflict between traditional America and the new attitude and lifestyle through the changing role of women, continued dominance of Christian values, and racism.

The world had just finished the biggest war in history, the First World War, and the United States was left almost unharmed by the war. The United States was able to experience a decade of peace and success following the war. During this decade, America became the wealthiest country in the world (Trueman, 2000). The people in the United States went through a colorful period during the twenties. However, at the same time the 1920s was also a very rebellious and difficult time for many. The culture of the 1920s has influenced the culture of America’s society today.

The 1920s was a time of prosperity and new ideas that challenged the social norm and began the movement into modernism that we know of today. The economy was still coming off of the First World War and tax policies were creating an economic boom with the increase of discretionary income. The United States was in a scary position on what to do after coming home from such a brutal war that was going to end all wars. The young generation brought out the best in people and challenged the intellect of many bright minds that had the solid traditionalist views with the new fast paced modernistic thoughts. The 1920s were a time of growth and led the United States and the modern views came quick and made a lasting impact.

After WWI, the United States entered an era of conservative values and a supposed “return to normalcy.” The 1920s were marked by a desire to return to the way of life before the left-leaning reforms of the Progressive Era and WWI. However, the nation was not unified during the decade. Many rifts began to form in American society and economy. The 1920s were marked by discord among many Americans in the areas of immigration, religion, and with the issue of socialism, marked especially by the Red Scare.

Americans had better wages during this time, more leisure time, and overall, had a better life than ever before. In addition, the 1920’s advocated social and cultural change as well. During this time period, the United States did not return to Normalcy, and instead developed attitudes that changed the life of the people of the United States forever thanks to social changes, cultural changes and changes in technology.

The 1920s was a huge time period for the United States. Modern technology such as automobiles, radios, and advertisement had taken America by storm. Rural areas were on the decline. American cities had attracted not only rural and urban citizens, but also people from all over the world. In America during the 1920s, citizens struggled with accepting other races and ethnicities into their widely populated country.

Americans in the 1920s were fresh off of World War I and freshly into the Prohibition Era. The American Dream was well defined- a life of wealth, comfort, and exuberance. After a World War I victory, the Dream was thought to be in the near future for every American. The country was seen as a world superpower, wealthy after the devastation of a war fought entirely overseas and brimming with hope and possibility- at least on the surface. Despite the highs experienced by much of the country, it wasn't without its problems. Crime violence was benevolently running the streets and the Speakeasies beyond the reach of full Prohibition, the world was being set-up for The Great Depression, and America was brimming with members of the "Lost

The 1920s, called the “Roaring Twenties,” was a time of prolonged economic prosperity. That all ended in 1929, with the Stock Market Crash. This crash effectively ended the prosperity we experienced, and began a decade of high unemployment, poverty, deflation, and plunging incomes across the board. These circumstances led the American people to become distrustful and generally disillusioned

The 1920’s was a fascinating and excting time in history, known for prosperity and change for the better, with a strong sense of independence and freedom. In my essay I will be discussing the social changes that took place during this particular era.

The 1920s was a time of progression in many fields. Technology has progressed with new inventions like the radio, laundry machine, the new assembly line method. Along with new inventions came social progression. A new wave of women entered the cities. These women pursued an more reckless but more exciting type of lifestyle. But most of all the economy had a tremendous growth during this period. A new consumer style of life was adopted and most spent money and raked in dept. Despite this progress, the 1920s weren’t free from conflict. Traditional values clashed against progressive ones. Rural communities voted in prohibition to ban alcohol. The KKK grew to its largest size in decades to fight for traditional values and more extreme views. The progressive social changes that affected the 1920s still has a hold on America to this day. Economically, The 1920s are similar to the 2010s due to a thriving economy. Technology just like the 1920s, is evolving very fast in the 2010s with new inventions being created around the clock just like in the 1920s.

Society as a whole was somewhat dysfunctional from a wide variety of things ranging from Prohibition to The Red Scare to Fundamentalism to the racial violence and tensions between Caucasians and African Americans. To begin with the cultural unrest, many Americans bickered amongst each other during the 1920’s over what morals and standards the country should embrace and exhibit as its own unadulterated values.
