Our society has plenty of problems that need to be solved and addressed. An issue we are going to be analyzing today is homelessness, and figuring out why and how to fix that issue. First, we start off with the ongoing homeless issue in the State of California by analyzing Angela Hart’s article from California Healthline and furthermore connecting the information gathered from Hart’s article using conflict theory. In the second paragraph, we will be reading about how those who are homeless not only face housing issues, but also health issues through the information that was gathered …show more content…
Which leads to the fifth and final paragraph in which I provide solutions to the homeless crisis by gathering the information given by the National Library of Medicine. Homelessness is an issue that has been on the rise and is still an ongoing problem in our society, especially in the state of California. According to Angela Hart of California Healthline, “At least 90% of adults who are experiencing homelessness in the state become homeless while living in California due primarily to the dire lack of affordable housing” (Hart, California Healthline). From what we can get from this information, is that homelessness is not primarily caused by one's actions, but from the actions of those who are controlling the cost of homes. This is where conflict theory comes into play. Conflict theory speaks to the fact that our society is in constant competition with one another, no matter what. Conflict theory's analytical argument for the homeless is that those who are renting or providing a roof over people’s heads are money hungry, so money hungry that they raise the cost of housing for those who are only able to
What is your selected social science theory? Homelessness a complex social issue. Why did you select this theory? For a start, the purpose of this paper is to explore the topic of homelessness and the associations it entails throughout our communities. Ever since I completed my internship at Catholic Charities Fort Worth, Texas – Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program – where I assisted homeless veteran families acquire safe, affordable housing and linked them to community resources/food pantries, I noticed several gaps within our systems and the inequality of income distribution, to just name

about 46.2 million people were considered poor. The nation’s poverty rate rose to 15.1 percent, whereas in 2009, 14.3 percent of people in America were living in poverty (Censky, 2011). That is an increase of 2.6 million people in 2010. In the United States, the federal poverty line – an absolute measure of annual income – is frequently used to determine who is categorized as poor (Ferris & Stein, 2008, 2010). Currently the government defines the poverty line as an income of $11,139 for an individual
Conflict Theory/Capitalism Numerous researchers have blamed the United States capitalism on the homeless population in America. Homelessness has been a social issues for many, many, decades and the problem continues to grow out-of-control daily. There are multi-risk factors that causes one to be in a homeless situation. significance of the advances in technology is the fact that homelessness is not just a problem in the United States, it has global implications. The people that die and are displaced as a result of homelessness is a major challenge to social justice. Through the tenets of the Critical Race Theory, it’s been statistically qualified and quantified that minority groups are frequently targeted and suffer from socioeconomic neglect, resulting in homelessness. was 664,414 people staying in a shelter somewhere in the United States (“The 2009 annual,” 2010). Through 2009, 1.56million different people were recorded to have used an emergency housing shelter (“The 2009 annual,” 2010). These numbers do not account for those who did not use emergency housing shelters, but were defined as homeless. The legal definition of homelessness one would have to review the McKinney-Veto act of 1987, it states “An individual who lacks a fixed,
The Social-Conflict Theory does help to point out homelessness in the United States and in other countries. Social conflict theory sees society divided by inequality and conflict. There is no doubt that wealthy people have more resources than the people in the working class. For example, children of wealthy parents have access to tutors and other resources that can affort to help the children succeed in school. Therefore, they are able to attend a more prestigious college. On the other hand, children
