After studying the different perspectives on social problems about sexuality and sexual orientation, I believe that I can move forward to beyond the classroom to help the LGBT+ community grow strong and make changes. The LGBT+ community has had a long run with fighting for equal rights and against discrimination, and the fight is not over. I have always been someone who believes so strongly in the power of education and open dialogue. I think it is one of the best ways to make a change. I think the best way to enact the “verb” of sociology is by getting out there to educate people, youths and adults, on the culture behind the community. There are a lot stigmas and stereotypes that a lot of people are not educated on. Once people understand the community more and have true information about the stereotypes, a shift in mainstream culture will slowly occur. The Conflict/Feminist perspective recognizes that “heterosexuals are granted a privileged place in our society” (126, Leon-Guerrero). It is important to recognize that we as a society assume everyone is straight until stated otherwise. We …show more content…
I want to petition to get better sex education in public schools across the nation. This would include teaching heterosexual sex AND homosexual sex in high school health classes. In chapter 17 of Social Problems Community, Policy, and Social Action, it states that “almost every critical issue leads to a social movement supporting change” (493, Leon-Guerrero). I want to create my own social movement by using online media to help queer youths feel comfortable learning about sex and being in a safe environment while doing so. There is a lot of online content about sex education and homosexual sex that is easy for most people with technology to access. I want to propose a bill that requires public school to teach sex education that includes everyone. That is what being equal
Hale’s arrival during Act I in Salem describes him as character full of confidence and eager to utilize his knowledge of witchcraft. Hale enters “loaded down with half a dozen heavy books”(Miller 36) and because he is carrying all these heavy books he projects an air of great knowledge and confidence. The other characters in novel greets Hale with respect and treats him as a character in high position as a respected minister. His cofidence on the subject of evil provides a sense of stability for the community of Salem. However, Hale’s own desire to discover witchcraft allows others to manipulate him easily and does not realise that he is being deceived.
“They had dispensed all the adventure and all the property. They expected her alone to keep the traditional ways, which her brothers, now among the barbarians, could fumble without detection. The heavy, deep-rooted women were to maintain the past against the flood, safe for returning.” (Loc 95). Kingston's family expects their daughter to carry on their culture. The main character, Kingston, in The Woman Warrior, talks about five different stories that her mother told her when she was young; her aunt, who killed herself because of the affair she has while her husband is in America, Fa Mu Lan, Chinese gothic legend warrior, who is the author’s favorite tale character, Brave Orchid, the narrator’s mom, who was a shaman in China but become a housewife in America, Moon orchid, the narrator’s other aunt, who killed herself because of the cultural difficulties in America, and lastly herself in America, where she has hard time to find her own identity as an American Chinese. Kingston uses characterization, conflict, and imagery to convey the theme that when cultures clash it is difficult to overcome inner conflicts.
Monroe Woodbury, know for its school pride, has always tried to accommodate their environment to meet those of the students. Nationality and Culture are commemorated during Multicultural Week and other events, but one’s sexual orientation and/or gender identity have always been left out, until recently. We have held a LGBT Conference for two years, which GLSEN has been a part of, and hold other events during the school day to promote LGBT issues, ranging from Day of Silence to Ally week. Due to financial constraint, we are limited in what our GSA can do. Our school district is very accepting, yet refrains from speaking about LGBT issues other than bullying. It’s a topic not mentioned and largely ignored
Daddy’s princess. Big brother’s responsibility. Daddy’s little girl. Some people view these as a sweet pet names for young ladies, but these verbal cues inexplicitly condition women to view themselves as the property of men starting at a young age. These learned notions may take hold as women begin to develop. As young girls mature, they find themselves striving to please their fathers and other male figures as one of their main aspirations in life due to this conditioning from society. (Rholetter p. 1) The submissive nature of young girls is a common theme in literature, but looking through the Feminist Lens offers readers a better understanding of the struggle surrounding remaining submissive or demanding power occurs.
The history of mental health in the United States show a robust movement towards the mental healthcare system we have today. Prior to the 19th century, individuals with mental health issues were widely considered to be demonically possessed, thus contributing to the stigmatization of mental illness and the proliferation of poor treatment conditions. However, in the 1800s, there was a dramatic change in mental healthcare in the U.S. The government took a proactive role in treating the mentally ill, leading to the dawn of state psychiatric facilities.
Women are more vulnerable to the effects of drugs and alcohols than men. Women drinking even smaller amounts of alcohol then men may result in greater harm over a shorter period of time; women also tend to lose mental function and brain mass quicker than men do. Most times women let their addiction escalade, because they tend to take care of themselves last. Some barriers why majority of women don’t seek professional help is denial. Scheduling conflict can be a big issue as well, such as not being able to take off work, house obligations, taking care of kids, they can have a hard time finding a good treatment center, lack of resources, and even understanding addiction. One problem I hear a lot from women at the facility is, having to go through
Women being prioritized over combat when injured is an issue that isn’t just because they’re women, but because it’s human nature to want to help those wounded whether they be men or women. James Gibson a master sergeant says, “if a girl gets shot in combat, all of the guys will be more focused on helping her than fighting.” The opposition argues that, guys will be way more subjective to this when a woman is wounded in combat, which is why there should be inequality. Men shouldn’t be distracted from their duties in combat. This is a valid argument, it’s also a partially faulty argument, owing to the fact that it’s human nature to want to help all people in need, regardless of their gender (Gibson). Nevertheless, men and women both need to
Prior to taking this class, my feminist knowledge was not lacking, but I do feel like I know more about the different perspectives after completing this course. I also feel like I have more knowledge about the issues and oppression women face in today’s society. My expectations of this course were a little different from the reality of it. After the introduction post, I thought that the focus would be very much on stereotypes, but in fact there was a broad range of study. In the rest of this paper, I will be talking about how my awareness of the history and experiences of women has grown, feminist concepts and feminist explanations (theory), how family, culture, and society shape us, and finally understanding the gendered dynamic
In this essay it will assess to what extent feminism has added to our understanding of society.
For our activism project, my sister, Maggie, and I went to the Ziibiwing Center in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. We live in the near-by village of Shepherd, so we decided to visit the Center while we were home for Easter break. I had been interested in visiting the Center for a number of years and saw this project as the necessary push to finally act on the desire. Mt. Pleasant is located right next to the reservation of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. At times is hard to tell where the reservation ends and the city begins. The Ziibiwing Center was opened in 2004 to help preserve the Anishinabe culture, honor their ancestors, and to educate people on the culture as well. The Anishinabe are the Ojibwe (Chippewa), the Odawa (Ottawa), and the Potawatomi.
The bone of conflict for criticism on feminism 's activist hypothesis is focused on the treatment of ladies living in a patriarchal society. Feminism 's activists brought up issues regarding why women were being constrained into a place of subordination, and their problems took a gander at with minimal significance. Susan Glaspell 's story "Trifles" portrays the predicament of ladies and their subordination while subversively remarking on the negative impacts this had on the female mind. "Trifles "starts with an examination concerning the murder of John Wright, which happens at his homestead house. His better half, Mrs.
Feminist perspective developed with the ideology that women face large amounts of inequalities in a patriarchal society. They aimed to address and rid the social world of this oppression of women by men. According to Bishop, (2015) “oppression occurs when one group of people use different forms of power to keep another group down in order to exploit them. The oppressor uses the power; the oppressed are exploited” (p. 133-134). Oppression must be by individual experience and not grouped into being the same for all. This includes understanding the original ideology of feminist theory being critiqued as only considering the experiences of middle class, white women. That black women, of lower class experienced oppression much different from the other women. Women are oppressed, thus has to be understood in a different construct that women are similar in some sources, experience of oppression but also experience oppression very differently from one individual to another. Feminist theories have further been expanded do its continuation throughout society and decades to encompass many more issues and arenas than just men and women relationships. Now it seeks to understand and address oppression based on culture, race, class, etc and not only for women but for all. Therefore, Bishop (2014) outlines five components that seem common to all forms of oppression and serve to maintain its presence in society.
As a white female, I am the opposite of a diverse minority in America, but that has never stopped me from observing and appreciating the diversity around me. My middle school student population was about a 70% minority makeup, and I loved it there. I never stopped learning new things from cultures I hadn't been introduced to in elementary school. High school is no different. I am currently attending an early college on the campus of the nation’s largest public HBCU. My class of 2017 is very small, and extremely diverse. The friends I made are from cultures all over the world: from Panama, Nigeria, Hungary, Vietnam, El Salvador, Pakistan, Germany, India, just to name a few. As the only white female in my grade, every friendship I made gave me
In Sociology, social action is defined as any intentional actions carried out in order to bring about possible changes in the social life (Glassman, Erdem & Bartholomew 2012). When considering social action on issues related to gender and sexuality, it is necessary to acknowledge that such issues have been of significant importance to the LGBT community for a long time. In fact, it is necessary to remember that the LGBT community, its members as well as its allies have been
However, from a different perspective Social Conflict Approach, Karl Max defined the Social Conflict Approach as a framework for building theory that sees society as an arena of inequality that generates conflict and changes. Conflict theory usually emphasizes on negative, conflicted and ever-changing nature of society. Unlike functionalists who defended the status quo, avoid social change and believe people works together to effect social order, conflict theories challenge the status quo, encourage social change and believe rich and powerful people force social order on the weak and poor. Now the problem is how far do social conflict theories relate to the educational system? As illustrated by Marxist theorists Althusser, education socially
