Does a concussion affect any other body part besides the brain? My topic concussion and what it does to the body. A concussion is a injury to the brain the reason I pick this topic is because I had a concussion last season of football, and I want to know if a concussion affects more than just the brain, and what happens over time. I also picked this topic because I want to know more about concussion because I only know the common meaning of it. Does a concussion affect other body parts besides the brain? To find information on concussion I used Gale Student Resources to search up my topic. I only used one site to find my article I found this site on Etiwanda Library.com under EHS Database, and it took me right to Gale Student Resources …show more content…
Bennet Omalu made concussions a big deal and not just a keeping it in the dark from people and the the players for the NFL. He was the one who discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy AKA(CTE) a disease caused by trauma to the head. He discovered CTE do to the death of Mike Webster. Mike died unexpectedly Dr.Omalu believed it was do to the mood disorders, depression ,drug abuse, destitution and Mike one Attempted suicide do to the depression. Dr.Omalu did a self analyses Mike brain tissue and he found out that Mike suffered from dementia pugilistica which is caused by repeated hits to the head. Dr. Omalu finally discovered CTE after the death of Tony Long he committed suicide in …show more content…
I could have use some of other site that google would have shown me. Most sites though don’t have the source citation at the bottom of the page or article. This site I used was a database from my school so I would believe they would give us the best sites but next time I should use other sites to find information that the site might not have. This site has credibility, and tells you where it came from, when it was published, and who’s it from . I chose this topic because I have had a concussion during my football, and I want to know what goes on in the brain during, and after a concussion. Now that I have done this project it makes me second guess about playing sports sometime because a concussion can lead to depression, mood disorders, suicide thoughts do to the depression. Good thing I have only had one concussion, and it was a Grade 1 concussion there are three grades of concussion. Grade 1 is “no loss of consciousness, brief confusion, and other symptoms that clear up within 15 minutes.”
Grade 2 is “no loss of consciousness, brief confusion, and other symptoms that clear up in more than 15 minutes.” Grade 3 is “loss of consciousness for any period of time.” Grade 3 usually leads to quitting of sports do to injury to the
In the sport of rugby there are a lot of different injuries that you could get in the sport for example a concussion. The reason why this topic is interesting to research is because the injurie which is called a concussion is a fascinating injurie. “A Concussion is a type of head injury. It happens when someone gets a significant bang on the head - so much which the brain is shaken and knocks against the inside of the skull. This causes the nerves and structures in the brain to be altered.” The reason why I have chosen to research into concussion in rugby is because I find it interesting how an injurie from when you were a child can have an effect on your body in later life, and how people have found out a way to prevent a concussion to happen. Also I play rugby so I wanted to find out what is a concussion in more detail, and by this research I have done I could get a better understanding of a concussion. And in my essay I will be talking about the Significant risk of concussion in children, Short and long term effects of concussion, Ways to prevent a concussion ,Concussion linked to mental health problems for ex-sportsmen, Teens who suffer a concussion and a result after a concussion.
Shumko and Toto’s article provides information on symptoms and recovery time while even putting together true stories about athletes who have had concussions. The article starts off with a story of a boy who suffered a concussion while playing soccer. Shumko and Toto expand from that story by following it up with statistics on how many people have concussions to offering information on how health assessment centers for athletes have concussions programs. The author’s gives a broad view on concussions and the positive outcome’s of making more people aware of the injury.
Over the past couple of years, there has been a growing concern for NFL player’s safety and the amount of concussions occurring over the past years. A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury that may be caused by either a fall; a direct blow to the head, face, or neck; or a blow elsewhere on the body that transmits force to the head (JAAPA). There has been a high attention directed towards concussions in many sports, but mainly football. The purpose of the research I will be conducting is to educate the players, coaches, and future players of the NFL on ways to prevent concussions. Several topics I will touch upon my research topic are how concussions associate with musculoskeletal injuries, how long a player should be sidelined before returning to play, the amount of research that has been done to prevent concussions, how teammates can have an effect on whether a player continues playing through a concussion or if they take the safe route, how coaches who are educated annually on concussions can decrease how bad a concussion is and ways coaches have been educated in the past and how effective that method was. I will specifically be paying attention to what is known and what other ways can the members of the NFL be educated on concussions. I want to know what they know and what steps are they taking towards preventing concussions. I also want to know what damage does it cause to the brain over time.
Transition to Body/Main Point 1 How bad are concussions for your body you may ask. Bad.
During the time I’ve had to do this project I have come upon many interesting things that involve concussions. In my project I have researched what a concussion is, what the symptoms are, how more then one can affect you, and how you can receive them in different sports. On the right side of my trifold the section named “By the Sport” will show current research as to how and why concussions occur in various sports, how to prevent them, and finally what positions sustain the the most concussions in that sport. I've done all this research with sources to back the findings. Then, I will explain how concussions are different in adults and in children. In addition, I will share with the reader how concussions are treated at different ages. The learner profile I used in the summary of my project is Globalization and Sustainability. This is because I am explaining facts about concussions to the reader and showing them how concussion impact sports today.
Concussions are a quickly growing epidemic among young athletes who are involved in contact sports such as football, basketball, hockey, etc. It is a very common injury and sometimes underreported. When left undetected, concussions can result in long-term brain damage and may even prove fatal. It is important to know the causes, symptoms, and signs of a concussion, especially for those who play sports. The nervous system is a collection of nerves and cells that are known as neurons that gives signals between different parts of the body. Structurally, the nervous system has two parts: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. According to the National Institutes of Health, the central nervous system is made up of the brain,
Many people hear the word “concussion” and think of it as being just a simple headache; however, not many know the significant health consequences associated with receiving a concussion. Concussions can have a variety of adverse effects on a person, some of which include sensory changes and deficits, emotional difficulties like depression, and an overall reduction in cognitive functioning. Abnormal eye movements and a reduced sense of touch are examples of sensory changes and deficits that are common with concussions. Individuals on the receiving end of concussions also deal with emotional difficulties including depression and even certain forms of guilt. Reduction in overall cognitive
This experiment is a descriptive research study that was used to see the amount of knowledge and amount of education college coaches have been given on the topic of Concussions. To see if coaches know the signs and symptoms of a concussion, how to identify if an athlete has concussion symptoms and if the coaches know the recovery protocol for an athlete to return to play. For this experiment, 28,183 coaches of division l, ll, and lll, colleges all over the country were sent an email asking to participate in this study to see how much knowledge and education they have on concussions. This lead to some limitations because they can only do the study on the coaches that choose to participate. But of those 28183 asked, 1818 coaches responded
The player's name was Mike Webster he was also known as “Iron Mike” because of the hits he received and delivered. Iron Mike played in 220 games the most in Steelers history he also was a Hall of Famer. After the NFL Iron Mike went of the deep end but no one really knew why, they all thought he went crazy. At age 50 Iron Mike was dead and they didn't really know why tell they examined his brain. The doctors though he had “ Punch Drunk Syndrome” which boxers were known to have. Some symptoms of “ Punch Drunk Syndrome” were delusion, paranoia, explosive behavior and loss of memory. Iron Mike had all of them and many more it was the worst case “Punch Drunk Syndrome” doctors had seen. When they examined his brain it wasn't what they thought it would look like at all the brain appeared to be in good condition and the scans all came back normal. After further research and examination the doctors diagnosed that Iron Mike had “Depression secondary to post concussion syndrome”. After the concussion syndrome was diagnosed the NFL's concussion crisis
Head injuries, including concussions, particularly in the game of American football, have become a subject of deep concern, much study and even Congressional hearings in the United States.
Concussions are and will continue to be an ongoing issue in almost all sports today. This is especially true in the case of football and the NFL. Concussions are considered the most common and least devastating form of traumatic brain injury someone can receive. Although concussions are considered the least serious type of brain injury they can still lead to and cause many irreversible brain diseases and in some cases people have even lost their lives because of concussions. One of these diseases is called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or better known as CTE. There have been many recent medical developments that have allowed us to learn more about the brain and things that affect it. This increased knowledge has caused unrest
Physicians describe a concussion as an immediate and transient neural function post traumatic impairment such as vision disturbance, alteration of consciousness, and other signs which result from brainstem involvement. An impulsive force or direct head blows leading to head acceleration are the leading causes of concussion in sports. However, not all reported loss of consciousness mean it is a concussion. The public mostly associates concussion with sports such as football, ice hockey, and boxing and it is not a major problem in other sports. The assumption is that most of these sports-related traumatic brain injuries that occur are concussions. Sports concussion is a
That is when the first person had to retire due to post concussion syndrome. His name was Al Toon and played for the New York Jets. After he retired, some others started to retire because of the same post concussion syndrome. This made Paul Taglibaue create a committee called the Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee in 1994. In 2002, Dr. Omalu had identified the first CTE in the brain of Mike Webster, who was a football player. “Omalu was the first doctor to identify CTE in a football player, “ (Library, 2016). Then in 2005 and 2006, Omalu had identified CTE in more football players. Once this started to happen more frequently in 2007 the NFL came up with new guidelines based on these concussions. In 2010, Goodell, the commissioner at the time, told all teams that there were going to be suspensions to people who violate playing rules that put the safety of others at risk. This was mainly about the hits that are taken to the head and neck. In 2014 alone, 14 players sue the NFL over these concussions. “In 2015 the judge lets the agreement of 5 million dollars per retired player for serious medical conditions associated with repeated head trauma.”(Library,2016). Through out these years many suicides happened due to CTE, such as Terry Long, Andre Waters, Dave Duerson, Ray Easterling, Junior Seau, Belcher, and Freel. These are only some, but there are many others who have given up their life because of the head trauma they got by playing football. The NFL
The issue of concussions has been downplayed for years dating back to when the first forms of professional football came to the U.S. but the past 10 years have been drastically different. We need to be more aware as a society about the negative consequences that occurs with a concussion in the short term and the long run. Researchers claim that concussions can decrease your thinking capacity all the way to even a shortened life span. Most importantly to any claim there is proof; numerous athletes over the years have unfortunately committed suicide because of depression/post concussion symptoms. However, the world runs on money thus lawsuits by former athletes are starting to be very common as most have lost their career earnings due to addictions. The real issue is how can we as a society limit concussions from having such terrible effects. This research paper details the social and economic spheres that stem from concussions and their effects. With emphasis on how to prevent traumatic brain injuries from occurring and the proper rehabilitation steps once one has been sustained. This paper will also address solutions for this issue at hand with regards to prevention, treatment and recovery.
My first research project was the dangers and preventions of concussions in sports. Concussions can be very dangerous if you are not wearing the proper equipment and do not treat them properly. For those of you who don’t know “a concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull”. There are many symptoms of a concussion. “You may be suffering from a concussion if you experience dizziness, headache, off-balance, amnesia for what occurred before the head trauma, anterograde amnesia (a loss of ability to create new memories after the head trauma), difficulty concentrating, irritability and vomiting”.
