Comradeship In All Quiet On The Western Front

Friendship and comradeship could be started in many unique ways, but one might not think of war as one of them. In the beginning of the 20th century, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand led to a war called the Great War, or the First World War. It resulted in the death of millions of innocent people. Erich Maria Remarque, who was a soldier in the First World War, wrote a novel called All Quiet on the Western Front. In Remarque’s novel, there are positive characteristics, comradeship, and friendship. Paul is the main character and narrator who was encouraged by his teacher to go to a war with his peers. Remarque showed that comradeship and friendship were extremely important to the characters, whether they were on the battlefield, while they were on leave, or even when they were hurt inside and outside. …show more content…

The comrades made sure that each man knew what he was doing in order to survive. As time went on, they developed a strong connection with each other. Paul describes their connection saying, "We don't talk much, but I believe we have a more complete communion with one another than even lovers have,” (94). When the Germans were attacked, Paul couldn’t find his comrades. When he heard their voices he said, “They are more to me than life, these voices, they are more than motherliness and more than fear; they are the strongest, most comforting thing there is anywhere: they are the voices of my comrades,”(212). When he heard them, Paul said, “…I belong to them and they to me; we all share the same fear and the same life...I could bury my face in them, in these voices, these words that have saved me and will stand by me,”
