The barbaric acts of witch hunts can be found all through history. A witch hunt is a campaign against a person or a group of people who hold unorthodox views. The two most notable witchhunts of religion are the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. During the Armenian Genocide, the Turks waged a war against the Christian Armenians. With the Holocaust, it was Hitler and his Nazis against the Jews. The cause of these two witch hunts can be boiled down into one category, and that is hatred of another group, because of their beliefs. In 1915 the Turkish government started a crusade against Christian Armenians. It included horrific massacres that were started by Abdul-Hamid II who thought the Armenians wanted a revolution, so he had 300,000 Armenians killed. The result of this was friction between the Muslim and Christian community (Gale 2012). “The Turkish leadership blamed the Armenians as a liability that was weakening the empire. They quickly began stripping away Armenian rights, disarming Armenian military personnel, and forcing them to serve in labor divisions” (Gale 2016). The quote above shows that this is the quintessence of a witch hunt against Armenians. …show more content…
It started with the first anti-Semitic laws “which initiated the process of driving Jews out of the public sphere” (Longerich 29). Then the next summer they passed the Nuremberg Laws, which gave them “special status” (Longerich 29). “In 1939, the Nazi regime began to corral Jews across Germany and the occupied territories into urban ghettoes. By 1941, mass exterminations of inmates transported to concentration camps were commonplace” (Mercadal 2016). All through history, you can find examples of witchhunts, because of someone’s
History is a phenomenon that has the propensity to repeat itself. Genocides have been committed throughout history, even before the term was assembled in 1944 and accepted by the United Nations in 1946 as a crime under international law. According to the United Nations, genocide is defined as “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” A minimum of twenty-seven genocides have been documented across the world. During the 20th century, the Armenian Genocide and the Ukrainian genocide (Holodomor) transpired. Currently, in the 21st century, the world is witnessing another brutal genocide occurring in Myanmar. A kindred pattern of events is perceived throughout the duration of genocides along with
The three main reasons for the persecutions of many innocent victims in Europe which last from about 1480-1700. Was, first, age, gender, and a persons class. Second, was the public opinion and peer pressure of people. And third, was very strong religious beliefs. The techniques of the witch hunts were the most helpless, or the ones that are blamed by somebody else ,in other words scapegoating . These techniques are the very same we used today in many political, economic, ideological conflicts. So we some what have witch hunts
A witch hunt is an investigation carried out ostensibly to uncover disloyalty, subversive political activity, etc., usually conducted with much publicity and often relying upon inconclusive evidence and capitalizing on public fear of unpopular opinions. It causes mass hysteria and makes the public blindly follow the accuser with little to no evidence.
In both cases, we see anti-Semitism as a key theme in persecution. In the European Witch Craze, the perversion of Jewish traditions being applied to witches and witchcraft in the form of the Black Sabbath (Ben-Yehuda, 4), the Spanish Inquisition especially targeted Jews in its persecution and torture. Why in particular those of Jewish descent were targeted is not confirmed, but Gunst suggests that this could be the result of economic disparity between Jewish and Christian communities at the

A witch hunt is a campaign directed against a person or group holding unpopular views. This modern day witch hunt goes against more than views, it goes against what most can't help, nationality and citizenship. An anonymous group in Utah "The concerned citizens of the United States" wrote a list of supposed illegal immigrants saying that the government needs to start deportation now.
Witch hunts have been around since the start of Christianity. As time progressed, witch hunts have taken many forms. It does not necessarily mean that you hunt actual witches. It simply means one group is hunting another; an example would be the Holocaust. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, he bases the story on the Salem witch trials. While the motivations differ, societal similarities exist and both teach us that when a whole society of people has a fear so great, that it can be used against them. The effects and consequences of witch hunts is explained well in The Crucible. Witch hunts are influenced by fear, power and hatred. They both played a huge role in The Crucible and the Holocaust.
The Armenian Genocide also referred as the Armenian Holocaust was a horrific act done by the Turkish Ottoman government to exterminate and kill many Armenians. Millions of Armenians lost their lives due to this event and Turkey refutes that any event ever happened or occurred. The start of the genocide took place in April 24 1915 where the ottoman empire took many Armenian leaders to eventually murder them. The event was carried out during and after World War 1. The genocide was implemented in two phases which where the wholesale killing of the male population, then the death marches of the children and women leading to starvation because their food and water were deprived as well as their dignity since they raped and robbed them. There were
I will compare the Holocaust and the genocide in Rwanda. I would also identify the aggressors, the target groups, the reasons why aggressors engaged in genocide. I will also explain what occurred, the attempts made to stop the genocide and by whom and analyze the outcomes. Last of all, contrast them. I will explain why it's so different.
The rounding of Japanese Americans during World War 2 was another example of witch hunts in history. The Japanese Americans were feared as a security risk so they were put into internment camps which were like prisons. That is similar to the salem witch trials because they both had to get rid of the people who they thought threaten their town/country in a cruel way.
The Jewish people have been one of the most persecuted groups in history since the days of Jesus, since the years of the Holocaust and still to this day (prezi.com). When the Nazis persecuted the Jews, one of the reasons given was the defeat of Germany in the First World War. The persecution of Jews reached its most destructive form in Nazi Germany, which made the destruction of the Jews a priority, culminating in the killing of approximately 6,000,000 Jews during the Holocaust from 1941 to 1945.
In Norman Cohn’s book, Europe’s Inner Demons, his ultimate goal is to explain the development of anti-human conspiracies. He discusses how these “fantasies” were gradually tied to Christians and eventually how they influenced the European witch-hunts. It can be difficult to decipher his exact thesis as his preface itself seems to function as one large thesis. However, his thesis overall seems to be that “the great witch-hunt became possible when these practices and experiences were interpreted in terms of the traditional stereotype of the clandestine, systematically anti-human society.” He proves his thesis by discussing how the tradition began and was tied to early Christians and then discussing its transition and use by later Christians to demonize people and practices they feared or did not understand. He shows how this tradition’s precedence in history was what allowed for it to be used to such great effect during Europe’s witch hunts.
The main goal of these reforms was to move the non-Muslims from an inferior national to a full subject of the Empire. The thought was that if the Sultan gave his minority subjects more rights, per say, than they would not form a separatist movement. Or worse the subjects separatist movement lobby international support; for example, in the Greek national movement in 1821. The Greeks were assisted by France, Romanov Russia, and The United Kingdom. In this way two causes for the Armenian genocide interweave. At the same time as nationalistic centrifugal forces are pulling the Empire apart, Europe is sticking their hands in Ottoman internal affairs. The Tanzimat Reforms were really a failure, and did not promote equal citizenship among citizens. Nor
Witch-hunt: a campaign aimed against a person or group holding unpopular views. Since the terrorist attacks against the United States, the fall of the twin towers on September 11, 2001, the presence of islam phobia has increased dramatically, causing Arab-Americans to undergo bigotry, prejudice, stereotypes which also extend into verbal and physical abuse. Arab-Americans are verbally and physically attacked all the time and such incidents have increased since the attack of September 11, 2001. Future witch-hunts of Arab-Americans can be avoided by educating people in Islamic cultures.
The Armenian Massacre happened in 1894-1896 and the Armenian Genocide happened in 1915-1920 which was caused by the Turkish Government. The Turkish Government’s aim was to remove all the Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire because they were more educated and wealthier then the Turkish population . The Turkish Government was also worried that the Armenians would become allies with Russia, who were a threat to Turkey . They killed and deported the Armenians to prevent this happening. It has been estimated
