Hello, today I will be writing a paper about the similarities and differences between the story Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka and the movie Billy Elliot. I will not be writing a comparison of the story, but of the two main characters.
In the beginning of the story metamorphosis, the main character lives a normal life I would say working for his family paying off the debt his family owes. The story takes a major change when the main character Gregor turns into a bug (not specified). Throughout the story, you follow the life of Gregor and the changes he goes through. As the story goes on, you figure out that Gregor’s family stops caring for him after he turns into this bug and can't pay their bills.
The movie Billy Elliot takes place in Northern England following the character Billy a young boy. In the beginning of the story he is a boxer but one day he gets exposed to ballet and pursues dancing with the talent he has. He lies to his family saying that he is still doing boxing even though he is actually doing ballet. His family eventually finds out and does not support it at all, until one day his dad changes his mind. Billy’s father thinks Billy has more to live in life than just growing up and becoming a coal miner(which is common in the town). He sells the jewelry of Billy’s dead mother to make sure he can live his life. Okay now that you get the gist of both stories I will start my comparison.
Gregor was a normal guy, has he was very nice and respectable, his family loved him and depended on him. That all changed will Gregor became a bug, Gregor mentally changed, he started liking dark, cramped spaces, he also liked laying on the wall and ceiling instead of his bed.
Billy was your average boy the change Billy goes through is a mental change not a physical like Gregor. Billy changes a begins to like ballet. His family views him as their son they love him, but that changes when they figure out he has been dancing instead of doing boxing. Already there are some small similarities you may notice. They both are average, nothing different about them, a change happens to both of them, and both families think different of both of them after their change.
As metamorphosis goes on, more change goes on to
(Pg#79: “I felt so much better paying my respects to Rubin. Everything looked brighter, and I didn't have that funny feeling anymore.”) I felt like this part was a big character development for Billy and showed a lot of maturity for him, it also showed how he accepts his actions and mistakes, in the movie they didn't portray this scene well, Billy didn't go to Rubins funeral at all, he just watched from the sidelines, I feel like switching that part up took a big part away from Billy's development. Where The Red Fern Grows book also had a better setting than the movie. An example is on page 128 when Billy was talking about wanting to be able to do everything again because they were about to move, (Pg#128: someday I'd like to go back-back to those beautiful hills.
Billy Elliot, directed by Stephen Daldry, details the life of an 11-year-old working-class boy who is caught up in the poverty and violence of North-east England during the 1984 miner’s strikes. After a local ballet teacher discovers Billy’s raw talent for dancing, Billy decides he wants to be a ballet dancer. Billy had to overcome many obstacles in order to follow his new found dream. Two of these were family traditions and expectations, and social class. Billy also received help to overcome many obstacles, this help came from Mrs Wilkinson.
Kanye West and Harding’s quotes both relate to the character Billy Bibbit because he was an outcast in society and thought lowly of himself. Billy was different, and because of this, society did not accept him and that caused him to stay sheltered by his mother. His mother was overprotective and did not toughen Billy up, so Billy had a stutter and a deep dependence on other people. When he got to the hospital, he had no experience in the real world, and he suddenly had no help from his mother. This led him to be more withdrawn and allowed people to belittle him because he could not stand up for himself. After being made fun of and thrown aside by society, Billy had no self confidence. His feelings towards himself were only negative, and these feelings rules
Billy is a thirteen year old boy, so according to Erikson, he is an adolescent, going through Identity versus Role Confusion (website). To begin with, an adolescent is leaving the stage of complete dependency of parents, and entering a world of wanting to do things on their own. In the process of wanting to do things on their own, an adolescent is also trying to find out who they are in this world. The adolescent learns their identity through exploration of themselves and their boundaries (website). Billy chooses to find his identity by appearing cooler than he really is.
Billy Elliot was a story of adversity and struggle. It follows a young boy who becomes a great success at ballet after he starts attending dance classes instead of his boxing classes. The play uses parallel storylines of the struggle for coal mine workers’ rights and Billy’s struggle to become a great dancer. It takes place in an impoverished town in the UK during the 80’s but it was performed in 2017 at the Berkeley playhouse. The play is impactful because it satires gender stereotypes and advocates for the payoff of hard work.
Billy Elliot explores the concept of identity and how it can shaped and changed through life experiences. It tells the story of an 11-year-old boy named Billy, and his father, Jackie, amidst a mining strike in a town in Northern England during the mid-1980s. Billy creates his personal identity through dance as it is a means of expressing himself. In Billy’s world, strict stereotypes dealing with gender and sexual identity are enforced, which created not only an internal personal battle for Billy, but also an external conflict between him and his family. As a result, he was ashamed of and forced to hide his talent and passion for dance, shown in the quote, “I feel like a right sissy”. The song “Town called Malice” was played in Billy’s main
Gregor’s major transformation occurred not when he turned into a bug, but through the changes in his life. Gregor’s life before the changed into some sort of bug was like a bumble bee. He would go through life doing as others told him. In
“The Metamorphosis” is a surreal story by Franz Kafka surrounding the transformation and betrayal of Gregor Samsa, who wakes up one day, reborn into a large insect. Along with the bizarre and nightmarish appearance of his new hard back, brown segmented belly, and many legs, Gregor only desire is to live a normal life, unfortunately, this is impossible because he struggles to even get out of bed. Gregor transformation into an insect is a vivid metaphor for the alienation of humans from around the world. After losing human form, Gregor is automatically deprived of the right to be a part of society. Franz Kafka could relate to Gregor because he too was mistreated/neglected by his father and worked a job that he was unhappy doing. Franz and Gregor both were providers for their families. Alienation, isolation, and loneliness were not hard to recognize during the Modernity and Modernism time period.
Franz Kafka’s twentieth-century classic, The Metamorphosis, shows the changes of the Samsa family after their son, Gregor, turns into a vile insect. Even though Gregor has turned into the most disgusting of creatures, this “metamorphosis” is ironic compared to the transformation that his family endures. While Gregor still sustains his humanity, the lack of any compassion and mercy from his family, is what makes them the disgusting creatures rather than Gregor. The changes of Gregor’s father, mother, and sister prove that the theme of metamorphosis is not exclusively present within Gregor.
“This scene not only expresses Billy’s rage, it visually represents his childhood. Billy is blocked by barriers of gender, class, and
Another difference between the two is the way in which characters are presented. In the novel the audience is introduced to Billy's captive mate, Montana Whildhack, as she is first placed into the Tralfamadorian zoo. She is place in the cohabitation with Billy while she is unconscious and is filled
The story metamorphosis and the movie Billy Elliot are alike in many ways but different too. Both of the main characters kind of keep to themselves. They aren't like they're family. They both have something about them that makes them stand out and might make people judge them. Both of their lives change drastically from how they usually are.
Gregor’s metamorphosis brings many positive and negative changes in himself as well as his family. His family used to rely on him for his income as he was the only source of money in the family, but now they all worked and earned money themselves that is a very big positive change in the family. The negative change was bad for the Gregor himself as he couldn’t face the world with his new appearance,
In real life, Kafka had very close and friendly relation with his father but they were quite contradictory to each other. The behavior of Kafka’s dad was very stern and strict just like Gregor’s father in “The Metamorphosis”. The relation of Kafka and his father can also be determined by upper class and lower class because Kafka’s father was very ethical but Kafka himself was quite immoral.
hands. When Billy does this, it gives us a feeling that his Nan is in
