The film “Romeo and Juliet” was an amazing adaptation of the original play. Few differences were observed throughout the movie. The director of the film, Zefirelli, excluded tedious details to perfect the play and express his creativity. The film illustrated the emotions and feelings of the characters that were excluded in the book. Act I is well written and follows the story line. In the beginning of the play; Shakespeare draws in the groundlings with raunchy jokes. This does not happen in the movie. After jokes are exchanged, a large fight breaks out between the Montague and the Capulet servants when they bite their thumbs at each other. After the party, Romeo and his friends proceed back to their houses. On the way, Romeo decides to find Juliet. In the play, Romeo climbs over the Capulet estate wall while his friends make jokes about him, Rosaline, and Juliet. In the movie, Romeo runs ahead of his friends to escape to Juliet inconspicuously. Juliet comes out on her balcony and starts to talk to herself while Romeo waits in the shadows. He comes out much to her surprise and talk about their undying love for each other. In the movie, Romeo and Juliet kiss a lot, while in the play they do not. They decide to get married the next day. Romeo goes to see Friar Lawrence and convince him to marry him and Juliet, in both the film and book. Nurse is sent to talk to Romeo the next day. Romeo and his friends are making dirty jokes and teasing the Nurse. In the film, they harass the nurse much more than in the book. This goes to show how little respect upper class men had for servants. Romeo tells Nurse the details about the wedding and Nurse proceeds back to the Capulet mansion. In both the book and film, Juliet is restlessly waiting for Nurse’s return. When she gets back Nurse finally tells Juliet the details. Romeo and Juliet then get married.
