Whispering to Witches and So Hard to Say
____________________________________________________
Introduction
During the marking period, I have read two books. One is called Whispering to Witches, by Anna Dale, and the other one is So Hard to Say, by Alex Sanchez. Some general similarities between the two books are that the stories are both about the main character discovering something new about either the world or himself, and they both have a teenage male protagonist. However, the most obvious similarity between the two books is definitely the latter, which is the main comparison point. Even though there are some similarities between the books, they are still fairly different. Now let’s dig into each story and see which one is better.
Whispering to Witches - Anna Dale
This is a fantasy novel about a young teenage boy called Joe who discovers that witches actually exist. He gets woven into the world of witchcraft and becomes close friends with a witch called Twiggy. He eventually helps Twiggy defeat the evil witch Logan Dritch and the ambitious mortal Lydia, who attempts to exterminate the witch population.

For example, Joe explains what Logan Dritch has done to the enchanted rat by saying, “Then Logan Dritch grabbed her by the tail and threw her out of the attic window” (Dale 278). This clearly shows physical conflict and action within the book, and this is just one of the many action scenes in the novel. These action elements within the novel attract the reader’s attention, because people tend to get more excited over scenes like fighting than scenes like sitting down and reading a book. These elements keep the audience
He is kind to his neighbours and a reliable father figure to his family. However, he had an affair with Abigail Williams and broke his trust with his wife, causing their relationship to be icy and awkward. His strengths are how he sees through Salam’s mass hysteria in the witch hunts, and rationalises the situation by retorting sarcastically “There might also be a dragon with five legs in my house, but no one’s ever seen it.”, how he is not afraid of going against majority to speak what he thinks is morally correct by asking “Is the accuser always holy now?” and how he ultimately sacrifices himself in the end in order not to succumb to the girls’ evil game and to die without
The stories will come to a point that they are the same but are in different time periods, There will be two topics that this essay introduces that will have similarities and differences they are both based on witchcraft and black magic. One background comes from a village in the late 1600’s there was catastrophic things going on with people being blamed using witchcraft, and being hanged without being proved by using witchcraft. The next story comes from Wisconsin in the 1950’s of a senate who produced a lot of investigation and hearings to try and expose infiltration of the US government. the stories will have their own way of exposing the events that have happened and why it occurred.
can solve all the witch problems. He causes Abigail and the girls to blurt out
Firstly, a circle of girls makes a poor choice of lying about being haunted by witches, which later
In any book, novel, or short story, imagery, diction, and details help create a certain theme or mood. Imagery can help show a scene in your head, diction can help give you a better idea of what the author is trying to say, and details add more to the story to give a better understanding. In the book Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, imagery, diction, and details make up an important part of creating a mysterious mood.
John you found out that he committed lechery. John then later tries to get Abigail Williams to admit that what she is doing is wrong and she should stop. John then finds out that he’s wife was accused. John goes to the court with Mary Warren to get her to tell the truth about what’s really going on and there's no witch. John gets accused of being a warlock then gets hanged because of it.
There are many ways authors include literary devices to not only express their position on certain things, but also to evoke emotion and thought from readers for them to fully understand the reason for them being presented. The author may drop hints through tone, style, symbolism, and motifs. These four elements help lead the reader to infer reasoning, meaning, and significance behind aspects of every story.
Tituba says the devil has many witches and is using someone else to bewitch Abigail. The girls began to throw names accusing people of being witches. Reverend Hale, the witch doctor tells the marshal to bring irons so they can arrest accused witches. Many innocent people are put to death due to the lies and revengeful nature of
of the story through the characters and their actions or gestures. These actions are visible in
This connects the reader to the story. This connects to the reader and helps the reader relate to the fight between the couple. The author uses dialogue because it helps the reader establish the tension and fury between the two characters. The text states “ What would you like to do? Get the button back and push it? Murder someone “(108). This textual evidence illustrates how the dialogue was worded helped the reader establish how the characters were feeling at this moment. The text states “ Why are you getting so upset? It's only talk.”(108) This evidence portrays the frustration between the characters and how this creates a divide between the characters. In conclusion, the dialogue helps the reader establish the tone and helps the reader understand the story better.
However, as soon as the witches spark ambition in him, he is no longer trustworthy and becomes evil and deceiving. Even before he reaches his home, thoughts of murder creep into his head and he is overcome with the desire to be powerful.
Imagine receiving an invitation to a prestigious and luxurious party tucked away inside a secret abbey. The gathering is a mysterious masquerade in which every guest’s face is concealed. The amenities include entertainment in the form of music and dance, and decorum exquisitely and meticulously crafted and placed. The whole atmosphere exudes a dream-like quality, which calls into question if the events are simply a product of one’s imagination. This situation is comparable to that of “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe. Originally published in 1842, this narrative tells the story of a wealthy noble, Prince Prospero. An extremely deadly plague, the Red Death, has devastated the land, and Prince Prospero invited a group of a
I have chosen “The Art Institute” because I believe that this school has the tools to help me increase my knowledge base in Web Design and Interactive Communications. In this program I plan to give each project my full attention to make sure that my work reflects a professional image of me and my skill sets. In addition, I am an individual full of character,
In George Orwell’s novel 1984, there is global war that has been going on for as long as anyone can remember. In the novel it seems like only Winston can recall that they haven’t always been at war with the same country. The people of Oceania are told through propaganda that they have always been at war with the same country. Today we have the war on terror, that has no end in sight, a widespread societal fear, suspension of certain civil liberties, and an unclear enemy who could be anywhere or anything.
“Have you ever wondered if Magic or witches and wizards really exist in this modern world? Well yes, they do exist, and they are quite active in the modern world. There are more than 10 million witches in the United States, with new practitioners on the rise daily.”(Caine) Being a witch is much different than what you may have seen in the movies. There is real magic to the craft, but witches or wizards don 't walk around turning people into to frogs with a flick of their magic wands. They don 't disappear into thin air, nor do they fly around through the night on broomsticks. They also don 't live in a big castle or mansion. They walk around as normal people and you wouldn 't be able to tell them apart for anyone else. The art of real witchcraft is one of the oldest practices in the world. “The oldest instruments of the real craft that have been discovered date back to 40,000 years ago, while the practice of real witchcraft dates back to paleolithic times. It is very much a way of life, as you may have heard from the modern followers of Wicca. During the middle ages, and in the event known as The Inquisition, the practice of witchcraft became outlawed throughout most of the Christianized world, an offense punishable by death.”(Caine) A witchcraft frenzy broke out in the early colonial history of America in Salem, Massachusetts. Insane torture tactics were put in by the church to draw out confessions. This period of time is often cited as the start of "the burning times."
