In his critical essay on “Othello” Taylor reflects with the parallels between fallen heroes, Othello and OJ Simpson. Taylor’s critique on Othello is compared with OJ Simpson because they were both protagonists in a short story. He wanted to know what made it a good story? Was it the fact that Othello was a hero and turned into a savage? One of his points specifically describes a person’s side of the story either a victim or criminal is not violated, until the case goes to court where it will be decided if it believed or not. The cases were familiar since they both killed their wife’s. In “Othello” Desdemona secretly married Othello without her father or anyone knowing. There was only one person who knew about their marriage and that was Iago. Iago was Othello’s right hand so therefore he would never doubt about him about anything, but little did he know he was his enemy. …show more content…
He starts filling Othello’s mind with crazy ideas on how his wife was having an affair with Cassio. Othello begins believing the lies getting gradually frustrated, and starts kindling a growing rage towards his wife. While he was blinded by his jealousy he convinced himself, both his wife and Cassio had to die to atone for what they have done. He feels justified due to believing his wife is having an affair behind his back and Cassio of committing adultery. Othello had killed his wife, it was revealed that Iago was only influencing him with lies, in a scheme to destroy their marriage. Disgusted that he was tricked to so easily and committed a terrible deed, Othello decides to kill himself to escape the
Othello’s love for Desdemona was so deep he could not bear the thought of another being with her; “If she be false, O! Then heaven mocks itself. I’ll not believe’t.” Iago uses the characters of Cassio and the obsessive Roderigo as his weapons in his cunning plan. Iago drives the idea into Othello’s mind that Desdemona has been unfaithful, inciting him into a state of jealousy. “Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul, but I do love thee; and when I love thee not, chaos is come again.” Othello growing insecurities about his wife’s faithfulness only adds to his psychological suffering which in turn acts as a catalyst towards the suffering of other characters involved in the play.Iago tells these lies with the intention of driving Othello insane as well as establish his dominance and influence the situations of those characters close to Othello. Evidence of this comes in one of Iago’s soliloquies from act two, scene one; “That Cassio loves her, I do well Believe’t: That she loves him, ‘tis apt and of great credit.” This section shows that he is trying to convince himself that his own manipulative lies are true and is trying to reassure his motives by justifying his own actions. By convincing Othello
Even though O.J. Simpson and Othello seem to be different, being that one is fictional and are from two distinctly different time periods, they actually have a lot in common. Obviously they are both men of color, but were also both in a position of power. Othello was a well respected Venetian general, who worked hard to get to his position. While O.J. was a famous football player who was on TV and in movies. Both men were in interracial marriages, Othello was married to Desdemona, who was considered to be “one of the most beautiful and virtuous in the land” (Hall). And O.J. was divorced from and had two kids with Nicole Brown Simpson. Both women were killed, one confirmed and one not proven, by their husband or ex-husband.
A man falls into a violent epileptic shock from sheer anger and jealousy. Othello is an aspiring man, who under delusional rage, allows revenge to blind him and so he betrays the trust of friendship and marriage. Actions alone can merit the characterization of evil simply because some deeds are too purely vicious and
The characterization of Othello contributes to theme in many different ways. Othello is someone who everyone seemed to trust. “This only is the witchcraft I have used. Here comes the lady. Let her witness it.” (pg.41). This quote analyzes how Othello is honest, he is proving that if others were asked about a certain event, they would
Solomon Northup woke up every morning and was perfectly content with his life just the way it was; living everyday life as a free man, a free black man at that. His optimistic view on life kept the spring in his step, along with his family and the love for his career. The streets of Saratoga, New York was where Solomon could be found roaming in the time of the Antebellum Era. Unfortunately, in this certain time in history, if an African-American had freedom, they were not going to have it for long. As slavery was beginning to break out, South imprisonment spread like wildfire. For the North it was a different story and actually took a little bit longer to make an appearance. For Solomon, it would only be a matter of time before someone
His thoughts were already slightly negative about the idea of Othello potentially sleeping with his wife, but with his isolation from others and his inability to seek the truth, he exaggerates his thoughts beyond reason, making them seem worse than they are. At this point, it has become apparent to the audience that, with his growing suspicion, Iago, with his rage, has become a threat to himself and those around him. Even though he has no real basis of fact of Othello sleeping with his wife, Iago decides to, “abuse Othello’s ear / That [Cassio] is too familiar with his wife” (1.3.431-433). By now, Iago’s rage has turned into malice, as he begins trying to bring his own pain onto others.
As Othello trusts the words of his ancient Iago, he becomes vulnerable to manipulation and abuse. His ancient uses Othello’s trust to drive him mad with jealousy, resulting in Othello’s downfall. Othello, after losing all power he once had, recognizes that he is the one to blame for his downfall and commits suicide. Okonkwo, on the other hand, is driven by his masculinity into impulsive decisions. As his life begins to unravel at his hands, Okonkwo commits suicide without realizing that he is the cause of his downfall. Both Okonkwo and Othello display characteristics of Aristotle’s tragic hero, conveying the theme that insecurity will bring upon disaster, while having their own themes resulting from their differences. Okonkwo’s tragic flaw and downfall without any recognition conveys the theme that one’s insecurity will lead to their demise regardless of their intent. Othello’s characterization as a tragic hero conveys the theme one’s trust can be manipulated into jealousy that can destroy any
Selling fetal tissue is illegal in the state of Michigan. Senators took it a step further, by voting Wednesday to pass a bill that makes it a felony to pay for the distribution or transportation of any part of an embryo. This includes delivering fetal tissues to medical research laboratories.
Starting off, Othello allows Iago to tamper with his mind and does nothing to stop it. Othello puts all of his trust in him, but Iago is just hiding behind a mask and only wishes to torment Othello. Othello is not aware of his surroundings and the people there, making him vulnerable. If he paid more attention to Desdemona and not Iago than he would not have thought to kill his loyal wife. Othello jumps to conclusions too quickly
Othello’s trust for Iago enables Iago to completely discredit Othello as the good guy of the play when Iago manipulates him into thinking Desdemona was unfaithful to him with Cassio. Even though Othello must know in his heart that Desdemona would not betray him, he is so caught up by Iago's efforts and has fallen for his manipulative lies, that all rational thoughts abandons Othello and he ultimately ends up murdering his wife since to Othello betrayal was immoral. At the end of play, even Othello can hardly believe what he has done because he thinks of himself as, "One not easily jealous, but, being wrought, perplexed in the extreme..." meaning that he has acted out of character and only in the interests of honor. Iago’s betrayal to those such as Othello and Desdemona, ultimately successfully destroyed everyone, himself included.
When he sees she was innocent and he killed her unjustly, Othello recovers. He sees his life in proportion and grieves at the terrible thing he has done. Then, He speaks with with calm rationality, judging and condemning and finally killing himself. And the only reason he has done all of this is because he fell prey to his emotions and the hatred of Iago.
In Shakespeare's Othello, Othello's pride prevents him from finding the truth, eventually leading to his demise. Initially, Othello and Desdemona are deeply in love, despite her father's disapproval of their marriage. However, when Othello promotes Cassio instead of Iago to Lieutenant, Iago has his revenge by convincing Othello that Desdemona cheats on him with Cassio, destroying the marriage between Othello and Desdemona. Othello grows to meet his downfall when his trusted friend Iago causes him to think that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful.
Othello is horribly jealous of what he thinks is going on between his wife and Cassio. This poisonous feeling turns Othello into a mad man and he strikes his wife. Jealousy causes
Othello, a play that was written in 1604 by William Shakespeare, is an example of a type of story called a “tragedy.” Throughout the course of the work, Othello proves himself to be very easily misled, despite his heroic status. This causes him to lose his ability to make good judgments and decisions. Even though Othello had a reputation as a hero, he ends up being one of the most gullible characters in the play when he completely falls into the evil trap that Iago set for him. As the story unfolds Othello’s character evolves in an extremely tragic way as Iago manipulates him and leaves him to rot in his misery. Eventually, this leads to Othello’s suicide.
