Comparing Stereotypes And Photography

John Szarkowski’s book, the Photographer’s Eye, is principally an examination of the various impressions often given by photographs. In particular, the investigation entails the study of both photographic styles and traditions. The origination of photography predominantly provided a completely new picture-making technique. However, the unique realm of photography has considerably changed from what it was in the mid-1960s (Marien 417). Today, the field is characterized by galleries, museums, college and university programs, as well as the rapidly increasing market values. All the pictures reproduced in the Photographer’s Eye were made for a number of reasons within a century and a quarter by different men with varying concerns and talents. In the book, John Szarkowski also addresses five codependent features of the photographic images. Specifically, these include: The Thing Itself, The Detail, The Frame, Time, and Vantage Point (Grange 4). These features are believed to have contributed to the establishment of various vocabularies and critical perceptions more often associated with the world of photography.

A photographer’s job is to capture a moment in a tangible form in which can last forever, perhaps in someone’s memory, or digitized in someone’s phone or modern museum and shown to the public. In the book “ the photograph as contemporary art” Contemporary Photography is divided into eight categories that were chosen to highlight the diverse styles and subject matter that is somehow connected through similar characteristics.

　　In the essay “On Photography” written in the 1970’s, author Susan Sontag states that “photographs really are experience captured” and the camera helps us put ourselves into the relation of the photographs. The practice of photography gives us assurance by its accurate relation to reality than any other devices. Sontag sets many insights that still exist in today’s photographic society, but it has been modernized into our generation of photographic technology.

The myth of photographic truth is an important debate in today’s society, the culture of the image, particularly photographs is one of the most important subject, because it influence, mostly through the medias, people vision of our world. While reading this part of the chapter, we notice that we focus on the meaning of the images or recordings, and how even if we don’t think about it, we already have a personal point of view of this image. For example, a picture can be a testimony of the past, and just by seeing it, and with the knowledge of the context, we can determine what is happening in the picture. Photography is a culture, not just a medium. Photography has been used as an exploitative tool, an explorative tool, and an artistic tool. A photograph can be a snapshot of time, a record, a detail, a shift, a perspective, an emotion. In curating photography, I had to learn how to create conversations and comparisons between images, whilst simultaneously letting each work retain its individuality. There is no one meaning in a photograph. The intrinsically challenging task was to provide points of entry into the works and elucidate the broad theme of the exhibition, whilst allowing counter-narratives and alternative readings to exist.

A collage is not simply putting pictures together; it is putting pictures together to relay a message. To get my point across, I took my time to arrange each picture to complement each other. The collage, which is vertical in its organization, consists of mostly neutral colors, but has some pops of red and pink. This paper provides an analysis of various photographs based on their categories, effectiveness, and historical movements. The three concepts of analysis are important when examining photographs, as they provide a strong basis for evaluation. The analytical process begins with category placements and end with contextual and historical movement evaluations as one considers the application of time, space, and the intended message of the six photographs. Photography goes beyond the automatic recordings produced by the picturing equipment; every picture symbolizes, represents, or means something.

Using a conceptual and practical framework to approach this research, I will compare various scholarly sources to reinterpret the existing ideologies of photography as an art form. This research partly falls under a practical approach, as it largely relies on my own creative experimentation with various mediums that combine both photography and art. This is crucially important, as it will take abstract concepts of photography as an art form and contextualize them into tangible experimentations for further analysis and interpretation. Within the conceptual analysis, I will use a visual analysis format to compare works from established artists that use photography in their pieces, as well as compare and contrast methods to establish a reinterpreted viewpoint on this subject matter.
