Living in the United States of America can give us a false sense of comfort in our democratic system. At the core of the democracy system is the belief that the voice of the people, either directly or through representative, is the defining power within the country. Due to the freedom within our culture, our economy has grown at unprecedented rates and to levels that exceed almost all other countries. However, because of the growth and size of industry their voices are also being heard and followed within our democratic system. These massive companies have lobbying power and can directly impact this country’s economy in either a positive or negative manor. Therefore, it is critical that these large companies act in an ethical manor …show more content…
They should never be taken from the rightful owners forcefully or unknowingly. We as Christians must also be aware that the possessions we are to respect may not only be physical items, but also anything that is of value to another such as time. Pfizer does a good job of identifying the appropriate use of company computers and the associated networks. The appropriate use of monetary funds was previous described under the fiduciary principle. Pfizer makes an additional extra effort toward the protection of the confidential and proprietary information, because this allows them to maintain their competitive advantage. Pfizer has shown the need for their employees to protect the company’s information, but they go beyond that and also expect that the employees respect the property of their competitors. It is not through unethical and illegal means that Pfizer wishes to surpass and compete with its competitors. Reliability The reliability principle expects that employees will follow through on the commitments that they have made to others. These commitments could be through either informal verbal conversations or via legal, contractual documents. In both situations it is expected that what is said will be done, is done. This principle again is plainly supported by the biblical Ten Commandments where Christians are commanded not to lie. Also in Proverbs 25:14 it is stated that
From an early age Jordan Rudd, now a high school senior at Brownsville Veteran’s Memorial High School, demonstrated the athletic talent and the necessary dedication to excel. Jordan’s father, Brownsville CBP Officer Michael Rudd, was able to recognize that raw talent and competitiveness which is unusual for a six year old. Officer Rudd worked with his daughter molding her and providing her with the skills and technique she would need to make it on the basketball court. When Jordan got to high school, she already had a reputation as a sports prodigy, but what made her stand out was her commitment to the team and her good sportsmanship.
Big business not only monopolized the economy, but also caused unprecedented corruption in the political system. Joseph Keppler’s “The Bosses of the Senate” political cartoon in Puck depicts the massive corruption in the political system as he claims that the Senate no longer served the people, but the industrial tycoons (document 4). The American people responded to this by forming political and economic organizations in an attempt to curb the control of the large
Dating back many decades, it appears that lobbying and politics have always gone hand and hand on any political stage. Lobbying has always had a strong presence in the legislation system. Lobbying is the process of offering campaign contributions, bribes, or information to policymakers for the purpose of achieving favorable policy outcomes. Conventional wisdom suggests that lobbying is the preferred mean for exerting political influence in rich countries and corruption in poor countries. The legislation is meant to benefit society and ensure that citizens are having their voices heard, instead of hindering them in favour of the multi-national corporations. Lobbying has a negative influence on legislations in both developed and developing
Many controversial topics have surfaced recently, but one that tends to fly under the radar is lobbying. Lobbying is defined as a group of persons who work or conduct a campaign to influence members of a legislature to vote according to a group’s special interests (“Lobby”). Although average citizens are not fully aware of the issue, it is quite contentious in politics. For those who are against it, they believe that restrictions should be placed on lobbying because it distorts democracy. Lobbyists use money and cost-effective strategies to sway the opinions of lawmakers. Others see lobbyists as effective, political tour guides who help pass legislation. An analysis of the lobbying process reveals the outcomes are often
Speaking truthfully is a very important part of living ethically. The Bible has very strong feelings against lying as seen in this book of Psalms. If someone knowingly tells someone that they intend to do something, but know that there is no
The Pfizer case provides an introduction to external analysis. The case highlights the pharmaceutical industry, which has enjoyed extraordinary long-run profitability. The case also demonstrates how broad changes in broad environmental factors (i.e. demographics, technology, culture, etc.) have an impact on industry competition. The case is not especially complex, so it is not overwhelming as a first case.
There has been a lot of fuss over big business influencing the government in the United States lately. Now there is no doubt that the business elite have some influence on politics. It can even be traced back to the early 1900’s, when “the People’s Party had disintegrated, but many writers and activists have continued to echo the Populists’ central thesis: that the U.S. democratic political system is in fact dominated by business elites” (). Although there are countless arguments to go against this idea, the questions still comes up today: Is government dominated by big business? Political Scientist G. William Domhoff believes that government is dominated by big business. More specifically, Domhoff believes that owners and top-level managers in income-producing properties are not only dominant power figures in the US, but they also have inordinate influence in the federal government (). Another political scientist however, Sheldon Kamieniecki, believes otherwise. He states that businesses do not really get involved in policies that affect them; and even when they do, their success rate at influencing policies is not consistent. In fact, he believes that other factions have more influence on government policies ().
Pfizer is the largest American pharmaceutical company and one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. It competes with Merck and Glaxo, and markets such well-known medications as Celebrex and Viagra. However, the pharmaceutical industry as a whole has undergone changes in recent years with significant consolidation taking place and with increased scrutiny regarding the ways in which drugs are developed, tested and marketed. In addition, recent controversies have erupted regarding Merck's drug Vioxx, and Pfizer has been the target of unwanted publicity regarding its painkiller Celebrex. This research considers the strategic position of Pfizer, including its strengths and weaknesses as well

Opportunities for Pfizer exist in two areas, first being the restructuring into a more lean and competitive organization and second is the penetration into emerging markets such as China and India who are now more able to purchase their products. With sales of approximately $50 billion per year, Pfizer has the opportunity to streamline its operations, cut costs, and add flexibility to the organization. If successful in this, they can better realize their profits and invest that money into future competitive products for the market.
This project is the final of three reports I will complete as part of the strategic analysis of Pfizer. This report focuses on strategic implementation and includes the following sections. First, the major concepts related to strategy implementation will be defined. Second, those concepts will be applied to the case of Pfizer in order to analyze its corporate governance, organizational structure and strategic leadership. The analysis of Pfizer will be followed by its evaluation to identify the major problem the company is facing and propose a solution. A short conclusion will close the report.
Since the founding of the United States, there have been divisions between political parties and individuals who bribe the delegates of these parties. In a capitalist country where money and politics combine together to create the system of government ‘functioning’ today - a delegate run capitalist “democracy” - it is all too easy for interest groups and wealthy individuals or organizations to affect laws and votes. Due to the first amendment right giving citizens a right to petition the American government and the 1819 U.S. court case Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission recognizing corporations as individual entities, an oil company that wishes to drill in preserved waters can practice that constitutional right to petition the
Throughout the history of the world, philosophy has been at the forefront of the human search for knowledge, but there is no other philosophy like ancient Greek philosophy. Ancient Greek philosophy roughly began in the sixth century BCE and continued on up until ancient Greece became apart of the Roman Empire. The great Greek philosophers of the time, like Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle focused their study of philosophy in subjects like political philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, ontology, logic, biology, and rhetoric to name a few. Even today many philosophers agree that ancient Greek philosophy has influenced much of today’s Western culture. Among the broad subject of ancient Greek philosophy there were many sub-forms of Greek philosophy like the Pre-Socratic philosophy, which involves the Milesian school, and Pythagoreanism, and classical Greek philosophy, which involves Socrates’, Plato’s, and Aristotle’s teachings; and then there was sophism and the sophists. Who are the sophists and why/how are their teachings relevant with the rest of ancient Greek philosophy?

In summary of the Pfizer case study, the organization realized executives and key employees were spending 20-40% of their time on support work rather than knowledge work. In response, the company started a “magic button” process. When an employee would like to pass off the tasks that are monotonous or lack luster they can press the “magic button”. The tasks are assigned to individuals of an outside organization for completion. The result is an increase of employee productivity.
