Heroes in Action: Odysseus & Spiderman The late actor, Christopher Reeve, once stated, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” In the epic, Odyssey, by Homer and the film, Spiderman, directed by Sam Raimi, the crux of the storyline relates to a hero and the challenges they face along the way. In the Odyssey, Odysseus is the main character. The epic tale outlines his travels as he attempts to travel back to his home against the will of some gods. In Spiderman, Peter Parker is the main character. He undergoes a transformation from a human to spider-like characteristics and abilities. Peter Parker devotes his life to saving others who are in need. Although …show more content…
Peter Parker’s mentor is his Uncle Ben. Peter is always remembering little things that his uncle has told him in the past years when he was alive, such as “with great power comes great responsibility.” The difference in the two characters’ mentors is that Odysseus has an actual mentor that he can see and listen to in person and Peter’s mentor is someone that he can only faintly remember and recall the things he said in the past. Along with Odysseus’s and Spiderman’s mentors, they also have allies. Odysseus’s allies are the Phaecians. After Odysseus’s ship is destroyed, he swims to the island Scheria, home of the Phaecians, and is warmly welcomed, fed, given gifts, and set off in a great ship to his home, Ithaca. Spiderman’s allies are the citizens of Queens, New York who believe in him as being a hero and not a villain. The resemblance in the two characters is that their allies are not just one person in particular but a group of people. By the end of the heroes’ journey, Odysseus and Peter go through tests, temptations, and the development of enemies. Odysseus is tested in controlling his men and getting them to do the right thing as well as of himself and his boastfulness. He is also tested on overcoming his fears when needing to enter the underworld. Additionally, Spiderman is scrutinized on saving people and building his name as the city’s hero. These two characters are related in the fact that they
Heroes in real life have supernatural abilities. People also find characteristics of heroes in regular people, like parents, famous people, or just who have made a big impact in their life. The main character of The Odyssey, Odysseus, is shown as a hero because him and his story fit the epic hero cycle. However, just because he is an epic hero, means that he is automatically a hero. He shows us throughout the collection of books that he lacks humility and is unfaithful, proving that he is not a hero in any sense. In Homer’s The Odyssey Odysseus’s lack of boundaries throughout his voyage back to Ithaca show that he is not a true hero.
Telemachus goes through self discovery and growth, stepping out of his father's shadow to assert his own identity and protect his family's honor. In the book “The Odysseus”, the character Odysseus is a hero because he is known for his intelligence, bravery and leadership skills. Odysseus is a strategic thinker who uses his wit to overcome challenges and to outsmart his enemies. In book ten it states “I pulled the sword from beside my hip and hacked away at the ropes that moored my blue-prowed ship of war and shouted rapid orders at my shipmates.” This piece of evidence shows how Odysseus is brave, heroic and quick-thinking.
Odysseus, the main character of The Odyssey, is an amazing example of an ancient hero that went through many different challenges. Heros, to me, are people who do great and help many different people in a lot of different ways. Odysseus is a good example of an ancient hero because he helped his city defeat Troy with his great trickery, courage, and strength. A great example of a modern day hero is Superman. Also known as Clark Kent, Superman is an outstanding hero. He helps out his city whenever they are invaded by evil super villains. He is able to accomplish these challenges with his superpowers, his willingness to protect the citizens. I believe that Odysseus has a lot of similarities with Superman in a hero’s journey.
Odysseus is the main character in The Odyssey. Throughout the poem, Odysseus comes across trials that hinder him from returning to Ithaca. Odysseus is an archetypal hero because he saves his men from the Cyclops. Henceforth, Odysseus uses courage and bravery to save his men. Odysseus states that he, "tied them silently together twinning cords of willow from the orges bed; then slung a man under each one and watched as they rode out of the cave" (Applebee et al. 908). This technique that Odysseus uses is how he leads his men to safety. Given these points, Odysseus represents an archetypal hero because of his courage to help save the day.
Christopher Reeve once stated, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite overwhelming obstacles.” In The Odyssey, Odysseus tries to return home, but he gets interfered with by the gods because of his pride. Along the way, he overcomes impossible tasks to return home to his wife and son. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus shows he is a hero because of his will to return home, protect his crew, and see his wife again. George Moore said, “A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.”
Modern day heroes (such as Spider-Man) don´t care about acquiring glory, their focus is only on the safety of the people and bringing forth a better and more peaceful world for everyone. Spider-Man saved a bus full of people while also saving his girlfriend from an evil villain. Whereas Odysseus would act a bit differently. ¨“Son of Laërtês and the gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways, Command yourself. Call off this battle now, Or Zeus who views the wide world may be angry.”.¨ Odysseus was so focused on having fame and glory that he couldn´t realize that the battle had gone to far because of him, and he actually needed someone else to tell him he needs to stop. Also Odysseus knows that the gods will forever be on his side, so whatever the circumstance Odysseus would still be considered a hero. ¨Square in the back it struck Odysseus, just under the right shoulder but he stood up against it- steady as a rock, unstaggered by Antinous’ blow- just shook his head, silent, his mind churning with thoughts of bloody work.¨ Odysseus was thinking about murdering his own people just because Antinous hit him in his back with a stool. And Odysseus eventually went on to kill over 100 suitors and yet he was still considered not only a hero but a phenomenal hero. Whereas if Spider-Man ever did something or anything like that he
When you think of a hero what usually comes to mind? Is it masculinity, or someone with attractive features in appearance, or someone who has the strength of ten men? A boy named Tyler Doohan, an 8 year old boy that tried to save his family from a fire in his trailer home, died trying to save his grandfather which was his best friend. He sacrificed his life to save his family, which is what Odysseus did in both part one and two, he tried to save his crew but their actions cost them, and he saved his wife and son from the suitors invading their home. Odysseus does fit the role as a “modern” hero.
In The Odyssey Odysseus stands up for his men who are traveling to war with him when Athena accuses them of not displaying much talent. It would be difficult for Odysseus to stand up for his men while talking to a goddess. However, he handles himself very wisely explaining to Athena the positive qualities in each of his men. In The Odyssey after Poseidon grows angry with Odysseus telling him he will suffer, it only makes Odysseus determination in himself increase. A hero is one who never gives up, so one major character traits they should obtain is determination Although Odysseus is beaten down by the god of the sea it does not decrease his determination. During the journey back from the war in The Odyssey after Poseidon has warned Odysseus that he will not make it home Odysseus not only works well with his men, but also is very self reliant. Self reliance is a huge part of becoming a hero because you have to be prepared at all times if something was to happen to your acquaintances, you need to have the confidence to fulfil your goal.
In the end, I think Odysseus is a hero because although he does make mistake and although no one is perfect he tried his best to get him and his men home safely. Odysseus has many good qualities consisting of quick thinking, creativity, protectiveness, and many more. He also has bad qualities like curiosity and ignorance. So even though people make mistakes and don’t always do the right thing I think that they can still be a
Odysseus is a hero because he acts courageously while facing the many challenges he encounters. Odysseus’s shows great bravery when he engages in physical challenges. Odysseus daringly fights against the suitors, while significantly outnumbered: “For I must
Heroic, Strong, Brave, Confident. A hero is these things and many more. Two heroes who are very alike are Odysseus from the Odyssey and Hercules from the Disney movie Hercules. Not only did they both battle fearsome monsters, they were both working against an angered Greek god and shared many common characteristics. Odysseus and Hercules may have been uncannily alike but in the beginning they had their differences in motive. Although towards the end their purpose became more alike than ever.
Many think being a hero is having super powers, but on the contrary it's more than that. A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. A hero like this is not just found in modern society today, but in mythology as well. In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus earns the title of a true hero by conveying many qualities such as: determination, courage and leadership.
Both of these heroes reflect the cultures of their time, one is a clever warrior and the other is a loyal soldier. Odysseus embodies the values of the power of the mind and the glory of man, which was present in ancient Greece; while Captain America is a powerful but loyal American soldier. The pride of Odysseus results in his boasting when he blinds Polyphemus. This angers Poseidon, yet Athena admires the cleverness of the hero, and some of the other gods take his side as well. Captain America still believes in clear right and wrong, and serving his country; even though he is in a time when this does not seem to be honored by many in the nation. He is part of the past century, when America won major wars and came out as the strongest of nations.
It is interesting to see how some folktales are similar to each other even though they can be from a different region of the world. An example of this happening is the stories of Odysseus and Sinbad. Both of these folktales have much in common but on is from the Middle East while the other from Greece. The way their travels are similar, how their adventures are being told, and how their personalities are alike prove this concept. These tales were told as entertainment and educate people about growth and perseverance.
I agree with Odysseus and The Flash because they didn’t give up when it was hard for them to get home. After trials they both kept going. They both had a time when friends and family thought they were dead. When they had trials or friends and family had trials they were there and they helped them
