Both the painting featured above have a common theme of Motherhood. They both picture a smiling mother holding their child to their chest. The painting on the left is called The Happy Mother; it was created by Max Bohm in 1913, and is currently located at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The Painting on the right is Mother and Child, and was made by Werner Drewes at an unknown date and is also located in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. In terms of line and shape, color, texture and pattern, and unity and variety, Bohm’s paint is much more pleasing to the eye than Drewes piece. Max Bohm was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1868, but spent much of his life living overseas in Europe. He studied Académie Julian in Paris and later won a gold medal from the Paris Salon for one of his paintings in 1898. He later taught at school in London until he returned to the States in 1911. He now has paintings in many museums, including the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art, and the Luxembourg Gallery. Max Bohm later died in 1923. ("Max Bohm." Max Bohm. Drewes visited the United States in 1924 and 1925, and then returned to go to work at the Bauhaus. 5 years later he returned to the States and started exhibiting his work. He worked at several colleges, during which he became an American citizen, and was on the boards of several art groups, including the American Artists Congress and the American Abstract Artists group. Drewes then later died in Virginia in 1985. ("Werner Drewes." Werner Drewes / American Art. Smithsonian American Art Museum,
The artwork that is my personal favorite is Ethel Long by Arthur Byron Phillips. This painting in tempera was made on hardboard in 1966 or 1967. Phillips successfully captures the beauty of the older woman through the use of light and the contrast of colors.
Both paintings represent the Madonna (the Virgin Mary) with the baby Jesus on her lap. In the previous painting, the arch vault and throne on which the mother is seated is stylized very realistically along with the saints surrounding them are all in proportion to themselves and to each other. In the later painting the pose of the Madonna is elongated and exaggerated, the baby in the later painting is quite large and the angels in the picture are crammed to one side with a "prophet" on the opposite which is very small not coming up to the Madonna's knee.
The painting Udney Maria Blakeley (1830), by Thomas Sully, was the first painting that came to mind when assigned the project: the painting has fascinated me both as a child and an adult due to the beauty of both the woman in the painting, but also from my deeper understanding of art now. Thomas Sully used the wet medium of oil on canvas, and included the woman in the foreground of the painting holding a rose in a vase in her right hand. There is a deep contrast between the women dressed in a white gown, and the darker background of the painting. Due to the highlighting along the left side of her face, and the shadowing on the right, it can be assumed that she is facing, or even looking straight at the
One of the unique parts of the ‘Seated Woman’ painting is the style that is presented by Picasso. Made mainstream in the art world by Picasso and fellow artist Georges Braque, cubism is the
Peter Max, born on October 19th, 1937, is also a well known pop artist icon. He is well known for painting for six presidents of the United States, and having is art being shown in presidential libraries. He also has his work in on display in United States Embassies. He was born in
The second painting, Youth, painted in 1842, oil on canvas, 53 in × 76 in, continues to have a beautiful green landscape, we still see trees, flowers, mountains, and now we see a castle in the back. In this painting the view is widening. The child from the last painting now looks like adolescent. The
A while back my uncle took my brother and me to a trip to the Museum of Contemporary of Art in San Diego. However, on that day, the museum had an event of Mexican heritage artist. I do not remember exactly all the details on that day, but fortunately, I do remember one painting I was able to remember, the “Flower Seller.” At the time, I could not understand why the picture had impact me and was the only one I can remember well. When I was young, I thought the young girl was decorating, but now I doubt she was decorating it. Today, I do not know what the girl is doing anymore. Is she about to carry it? What is in the background? Is she in a market or a field? And why is it that I remember this painting so well?
He was moved multiple times and attended many middle schools. His academic record wasn’t so good and neither was his college experience because he left only after a year. As a child he painted, collected postcards and took pictures of his friends and family with a small Kodak. After he quit college he moved to New york City and worked at the New York Public Library. He went to Paris to try and get better on his French but came back after a year to New York to become a writer. He also started taking pictures as well.
The painting on the left with the African American man sitting down reading a Bible is called The Lord Is My Shepherd and it was painted by Eastman Johnson in the year 1863.
While he was in Arizona he became fascinated by the Native American culture. He wrote about what he called the “True Colors” of the West. He stated that horses shadows were blue or a shade of Carmine. After a few months out West engulfing his life with Native and horse culture Harper's Weekly sent him out too South Carolina to focus on the Earthquake in 1886. 4 years later in 1890 he had acquired and made enough art to make his own show. It featured 21 of his own art pieces. By this time he had also created a reputation for himself that helped make his art pieces sell. His popularity got to him so much, he became extremely gluttonous and obesity became a major problem. He battled many health problems which in turn led to his early death on December 26, 1909 at the age of 48. Before his death though he was constantly on the move throughout the Wild West getting to know the natives and becoming engulfed into their culture. After he married his wife Eva they moved immediately to Kansas City where Frederic tried to make his way with a hardware business but it eventually failed. Eva moved back out East because she couldn’t handle the the rough and wild lifestyle the West had to offer. In 1890 after the one man art show Frederic out on his missed his beloved more than anything. So the couple decided to move to New Rochelle, New York in order to have nicer galleries and more living space for
The second piece of art is called: “Wounds of Existence.” This seems to be a painting on a unusually rugged surface made out of un-sanded wooden planks. It depicts what seems like, a man and a women with their faces close to each other with sad faces. The subject matter of this piece seem to be mellow and sad. I picked this piece because it jumped out at me at how absolutely unique it was, being painted on wooden planks.
This is a rather large (est. 6’ by 4’) oil painting on canvas, framed in wood, of a young woman dressed in a common French black and red dress, holding a baby while placing a flowering wreath on the top of a cross marking a grave. She is accompanied by a young girl, who is knelt near the same cross lighting a lantern that is hanging from it. It is painted in such a way as to depicted this happening either near dusk or dawn.
Directly above his head, yet still connected to his head is a semi-circle of an image of a woman holding a baby. It appears that the image is a memory, perhaps of his mother holding himself or his wife holding their child. The man is surely a representation of the artist and this is “his life”. He seems to be the focus of the painting and the overall theme appears to be memories layered throughout. Right above the original semi-circle is another semi-circle of four small, colorful squares. Each square is red, yellow, and blue in color reminding me of the artists’ Hispanic origins. Moving inward from the darker, gray and white outer portion of the painting seems to be a bookcase with three separate images. Each image is of a man painting on a canvas. These three separate images of a man painting throughout the artwork could be the artists’ memories of his father, or a significant man in his life. The grays, blacks, and white used show the artists’ darker memories, while the vibrant, beautiful colors symbolize the joyous ones. Similarly, the softer, warmer colors that the artist uses represent his love, appreciation, and admiration towards his father. Overall, the painting is a memory timeline that
The daughter has a dreamy expression on her face as she stares contentedly off into the distance. The mother has a kind, gentle expression on her face while she focuses on making her daughter’s hair pretty. The left half of the painting has a mirror that reflects the mother, daughter, a window and cabinet.
"A picture can paint a thousand words." I found the one picture in my mind that does paint a thousand words and more. It was a couple of weeks ago when I saw this picture in the writing center; the writing center is part of State College. The beautiful colors caught my eye. I was so enchanted by the painting, I lost the group I was with. When I heard about the observation essay, where we have to write about a person or thing in the city that catches your eye. I knew right away that I wanted to write about the painting. I don’t know why, but I felt that the painting was describing the way I felt at that moment.
