Do you believe in the super natural? Whether paranormal and mystical realms exist is a popular discussion topic. But in William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” and Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” it is illustrated what happens when the natural order of the world is tampered with. In each story, interrupting natural or political order leads to the super natural world taking hold and causing negative effects on both the characters’ state of mind as well as their surrounding environment. In Macbeth, the day after King Duncan’s murder, an Old Man comments to Ross about how he has seen some horrible and strange happenings throughout his life, but this day is definitely the worst and strangest of all. Ross agrees, and points out how “by th’clock ‘tis day and yet dark night strangles the travelling lamp” (Shakespeare, 2.4.6-7). This calls our attention to how it’s really supposed to be day time but instead it is as dark as night, giving this scene a certain eerie and foreboding feeling. It is as if something beyond the natural realm is unhappy with Duncan being killed and is letting the characters know. Similarly in Pet Sematary, Louis Creed’s friend Steve Masterton starts to experience the effects of the supernatural world taking hold while following Louis to the Micmac burial grounds. “But there was something worse than madness here” he thinks, “it was as if there was a magnet somewhere out in these woods and [I] could feel it pulling at something in [my] brain” (King, 557). The magic of Pet Sematary is not only encompassing Louis, but even an outsider like Steve can feel it too.
