In this essay there will be a comparison and contrast of The Great Gatsby and Like a Raisin in the Sun. Through each of the characters’ eyes in both of the stories, there will be a discussion of their success and failure of their ideas of the American Dream. In the first chapter of the The Great Gatsby the main protagonist, Nick Carraway, discussed how his father told him never criticize someone because they may not have the same advantages in life that he does. Mostly throughout the novel, there were many appearances of the privileged and the un-privileged. Nick comes from a pretty well off family from the North, he was able to go to Yale University. Nick experienced a different world once he moved to the east, the actions of people showed him how truly different the east and west really was. Back in the west, Nick was seen as a wealthy man and in the east he was seen as fortunate to be able to live in West Egg. Nick would mention that he lived by the infamous Gatsby in West Egg and everyone who assumed that he was just as wealthy or close to the wealth that Gatsby had. Nick was known as wealthy in the west, but not as much as anyone who lived in the east. …show more content…
Gatsby’s successful idea of the American dream was that he would finally be able to have the girl of his dream, Daisy. The only way he would be able to get Daisy was that if he was as rich or richer than her husband, Tom. In Gatsby’s younger age, he never had the wealth because of the side of town he came from. To become a rich man Gatsby worked harder and saved all his money, finally being able to talk to Daisy he saw the success of hard work paying off. Walter’s idea of the American dream was very different from Gatsby’s. He believed that the his dream consisted his liquor store business. The business he always dreamed of having, the only difference was the Gatsby worked hard to have his dream come true, while Walter waited for an extra
Emily Dickinson once said, “There is no frigate like a book”. However, in modern society, classic American literature has become cinematized and turned into box-office hits. The Great Gatsby, a book by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is one such example. Originally published in 1925, the novel’s flamboyant characters and profound plotline has been replicated and integrated into multiple movie representations. The 1974 movie adaptations of The Great Gatsby has been widely known for its resemblance to the book. Although the plot lines of this movie and book are similar, there are a few significant differences between the two.
In The Great Gatsby, there are several characters were working for The American Dream. The only one who has become successful is Jay Gatsby. As I mentioned in question before, he started with nothing, and he ended up very rich. ‘She never loved you, do you hear?’ he cried. ‘She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!’ (Pg 138) Gatsby said that he was poor and Daisy didn’t marry him at that time, so Daisy married Tom. And after a few years, because of Gatsby’s hard working and he involved in lots of illegal activities, he became rich. “Every Friday five crates of oranges and lemons arrived from a fruiterer in New York — every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves.” (Pg 47) Gatsby’s wealth allowed him to feed hundreds of guests at his extravagant parties. Overall, Fitzgerald shows how successful Gatsby is in The American
The term “Manifest Destiny” was, in part, an expression of a genuine ideal on the part of Americans. Yet it was also a justification to a push and to assume territory. The idea of Manifest Destiny was sparked by revolutionary American writings that encouraged appropriation of Canada. These writings rationalized that the Louisiana Purchase and the Untied States’ annexation of Texas ordained American complete domination of the North American continent. More broadly stated, Manifest destiny was a conviction that God intended North America to be under the control Americans. It’s an assertion of Anglo-Saxon supremacy.
The American Dream plays a huge role in The Great Gatsby. The main character, Gatsby, is working on accomplishing his dream. He made it to the top of the world by working hard and dreaming big. He is rich and powerful. He accomplished one side of his dream by being rich but he still wants more. Gatsby is so rich that he throws extravagant parties night after night hoping to get the attention of the girl just across the bay, Daisy. The parties don’t seem to work very well. Daisy isn’t apart of that crowd. She is from the other part of town in East Egg.
The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 by author F.Scott Fitzgerald, multiple films have been made from the book, including the 2013 film of the same name directed by Baz Luhrmann. The story is about a man named Nick Carraway, who had just moved to the east coast, and his interaction with a man named Jay Gatsby. The movie follows the story that Fitzgerald wrote. However, there are some differences between the movie and the book about what the main focus of the story is. The biggest difference between the book and the movie is that the movie seems to be about the tragedy between Gatsby and Daisy, while the book is more about the tragedy that happens to Nick.
There are many similarities involving the main characters in the books The Great Gatsby and A Raisin in the Sun. For example, they are similar because their entire lives revolve around money. Also, they define their lives by determining what social class they live in. Another main likeness between the two is that they reside in large cities. Which leads to problems that people in rural communities wouldn’t have. On the other hand, they also have major differences. One is wealthy, the other lives in poverty. Jay Gatsby lives in a paradise-like community in New York, while Walter Younger and his family live in the slums of Chicago. Another difference between them is their race. Jay, being a white, is a well respected individual in his part
Nick made his money working as a stoker in wall street unlike Gatsby who made his money organizing crime by running an illegal distribution of alcohol. Gatsby offered Nick to be a part of it, but he declined to preserve his
The main idea of American dream is to earn money through hard work and Gatsby failed to do so. In order to earn the love of Daisy, he obtained big house, car and other material possessions. American dream is an idea of pursuing happiness and Gatsby violated this as he pursued mere
The book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, has been made as movies in two different versions. The first movie was published in 1974, directed by Jack Clayton, while the second movie was published in 2013, directed by Baz Luhrmann. Although both movies portrays the same story, their view point of the movies are different. Because they focus on different scenes, what they have shown in the movies are different; while one movies shows some of the major parts, the other movie deleted the part, showing that they were not focusing on some of the major events of the book. While movie directed by Luhrmann has more focus every little parts of the book and the major characters, the movie directed by Clayton is more likely to focus on the minor characters. Also, looking at the time period of the movie being produced, the movie by Luhrmann is more of modern and understandable to the audience of younger ages, than movie by Clayton.
In The Great Gatsby, A key part of the story is the death of Myrtle Wilson who is Tom Buchanan’s Mistress that he uses for his own desires. In the 1974 Version of the story Myrtle and her husband George Wilson were in an argument that I assume to be about her affair with Mr. Buchanan. Earlier in the Day Mr buchanan drove the bright yellow car. The bright yellow car was coming towards the gas station and she is trying to escape her husband's arms to get to the car and the scene ends. In the next scene she is dead and people assume that Mr Gatsby did it however, Daisy Buchanan was the one who was driving the car to try and calm herself down. In the 2013 Version Everything is the same except for it goes into
Although "The Great Gatsby" is filled with multiple themes such as love, money, order, reality, illusion and immorality, no one would probably deny that the predominate one focuses on the American Dream and the downfall of those who attempt to reach its illusionary goals. The attempt to capture the American Dream is the central of this novel. This can be explained by how Gatsby came to get his fortune. By studying the process of how Gatsby tried to achieve his own so-called American Dream, we could have a better understanding of what American dream is all about, in those down-to-earth Americans' point of view. The characterization of Gatsby is a representative figure among Americans as he devoted his whole life to achieve his dream.
The American Dream is a nationwide belief that entails the possibility for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility achieved through arduous work in a society with few barriers. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, themes of corruption, idealism, and social upheaval, create a portrait of the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale concerning the American Dream. The story primarily concerns mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his idealistic passion to achieve the American Dream, Daisy Buchanan, the love of his life. In the novel, there are two kinds of wealth, the inherited wealth of Daisy and Tom Buchanan, and the newly

When I was just a kid, I have read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald in Chinese. Since I was young and naive then, I did not get the meaning of the story, and I thought it was a nonsense. When I was older, I watched the movie version of The Great Gatsby in which Leonardo Dicaprio played the part of Gatsby. The movie astonished me at that time, and I was deeply impressed by the beautiful and sorrow scenes in the movie, which gave me an idea to read the book again in English. As I have planned, I read the English version of The Great Gatsby in my sophomore year, and I realized that this is probably the best novel that I have ever read, and it was even better than the movie; consequently, I fell in
The American Dream is often portrayed by money and the want for wealth and a lavish lifestyle. Gatsby came from a small town in North Dakota and his parents were poor farmers, with nothing lavish or wealthy at all. He had always wanted to become a wealthy man, with a large house and fancy cars. When he was in the Midwest, he met the love of his life, Daisy. She had been with many other men and did not think much of Gatsby. As time went on, so did their relationship and they quickly fell in love.
