Powhatan argued that conflict between the colonists and Indians should stop. He believed that the two sides should create peace and become allies instead of enemies. Warehouse's argument was almost the exact opposite. Water house believed that the Indians are savage barbarians and that conquering them would be easier. He wanted to get revenge on the Indian people for attacking the colonists, and no longer wanted peace with them. Their differing opinions were due to their differences in background and experience. Powhatan was an old and wise Indian chief, he believed in unity and wanted to avoid conflict involving his people in order to protect them. Waterhouse was a colonist whose colony was attacked by Indians. Powhatan would obviously
A general history of Native Americans has been a part of my education for as long as I can remember. I remember how during the week before Thanksgiving, my 1st grade class did a skit about the “First Thanksgiving”. In order to look like Indians we made vests out of paper grocery bags and crumpled them up to look like leather and drew on them with crayons. When I think of my education of Native American culture, I think of going to North Pacific Reservations and seeing 10-12 ft tall totem poles with the shapes of animals carved into them. Most of the Native American tribes that I have learned about have been Western United States tribes because I grew up in California. When I read the list of Wisconsin Native
The European and Native American warfare equipment and tactics differed greatly. The European were a more developed and established organization with a developed and established method of warfare and tactics. The European used prescribed military tactics to fight and defend, they used methods such as raids ambushes and unit formations to invade, surprise and defend against the enemy. The European also used a prescribed military battle doctrine or what’s know today as field manuals (FM’s), they also fought in small unit and moved tactically in formations. The European used weaponry far more advanced than the Native Americans. They were armed with weapons such as matchlocks, pikes, swards and armor. The small organized units were strong enough to defended gained ground regardless of the number of casualties taken.
Generally, Natives wanted to be civil and did not want to have their lands taken. Many delegations happened to try to protect rights and safety. Groups like the Creeks seemed to test both English and Natives by their superior opinions. Other groups like the Mortar boycotted English ideas like the Treaty of Augusta. This treaty created a trade embargo, and said that Natives could be killed if they were to kill colonists.
Political leaders of the United States wanted Indians to adopt white ways, which they considered to be civilized. In 1811 many frontiers men were using different orthodox methods in ceding land from the Indians, some of the methods were bribing and tricking. Tecumseh a Shawnee tribal chief oppressed the United States and started an Indians resistance. He felt that the white men were taking land their land, women and causing problems everywhere they went. Tecumseh wanted to preserve the Indian way of life by combing tribes to band together against the Unites States. Tecumseh was able to gather thousands of Indians in his fight to rid whites from their lands. Tecumseh led many attacks on the Americans. He also used the voice of is brother Tenskwatawa to set forth a moral movement. Tenskwatawa preached that Indians must give up the white lifestyle which includes liquor and their clothing. He also preached that selling lands to the whites need to stop; land should be open and free to
Prior to the arrival of the Europeans the Powhatan’s were far less populated and were far less developed then the Europeans. They were hunter-gatherers, hunting in thick forests during winter or neo-lithic farmers who lived in villages and grew their own crops (such as maize, cotton, medicine and corn) and lived of them during summer and spring. The Powhatan’s believed that land was not to be owned but belonged to everyone and anyone, on that land they built simple tent like houses that they could easily move when they had to. They did not have brick houses and buildings that the Europeans had. The Powhatan’s used sticks, bows and arrows to hunt and not guns and weapons used by the Spanish. In a civilised place a man would do most of the work but women were the ones who built houses, fetched firewood and a lot more (Source 2) which is one of the many reasons why the Europeans thought the Indians were not civilised. There were no real boundaries, tribes were separated by rivers, swamps, mountains, and other natural landmarks (Source 13). The way they fought or killed was brutal,”…two large stones were placed on the ground, Smith’s head was forced upon them and a warrior raised a club to smash in his brain” (Source 4).
Native Americans were discriminated against and forced out of their own lands because the Americans felt inferior towards them. In 1812 the British found themselves at war with the Americans and this was the Native peoples chance to once and for all defeat their white superiors. Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief but he was addressing Choctaws and Chickasaws because he is calling for Native American unity throughout the entire United States. He announces his alliance with the British who are fighting against the Americans in 1812. He urges other Native American tribes to do the same because they have a common enemy. Also, it will be harder to fight the Americans if they are a unified force instead of individual tribes all fighting the common enemy
How come they have never met each other? Hey, but they all live in Canada and all met the Europeans! I wonder if the Europeans ever mentioned one tribe to the other? Anyway, the Inuit, Haida, and the Iroquois are the same in many ways but are a lot different.
During the years between 1607 and 1611, many colonists died due to the following: Enviromental issues, settlers skills, and the Relationships with the Indians. In those years many colonists were traveling and seeking me lives but little did they know, their skill level was very low. As a result, many of the colonists ended up dead. Most of the colonists that traveled were gentlemen. However, these are not the nice men you're thinking of. These gentlemen are men that are usually to used to be useful or doing any work at all. Other than mainly gentlemen, the only colonists they brought were barrel makers, druggists, and people with jobs other than FARMING! Now let's dig deeper into why so many colonists died between the years of 1607 and 1611.
During the 16th and 17th centuries, when the Europeans started to come over to the new world, they discovered a society of Indians that was strikingly different to their own. To understand how different, one must first compare and contrast some of the very important differences between them, such as how the Europeans considered the Indians to be extremely primitive and basic, while, considering themselves civilized. The Europeans considered that they were model societies, and they thought that the Indians society and culture should be changed to be very similar to their own.
The Shawnee chief Tecumseh a well-known Indian, became famous for his attempt to merge the Native American tribes against the Americans. In 1809 he began his voyage in order to profess his requests. A few years later Tecumseh arrived in the Osage Nation around the region of Oklahoma and tried to influence the Osage Nation with his political agenda. Tecumseh had wanted the Osage Nation to join the pan-Indian confederacy. Jointly with other unique tribes and the military aid of the British troops. Tecumseh the Shawnee chief called upon the Osages to start or commence war against the Americans. The speech Tecumseh presents gives evidence of his political standing.

According to the Chief Red Cloud, the government chose where Native Americans lived and how their children would be raised (speech). Colonist started war when all the American Indians wanted was peace, until horse Creek in 1852. Men showed
After the forming of America, tensions were high between the Americans and the American Indians. Before the chaos of the later years, the indians were living somewhat peacefully. They formed groups and had a form of their own civilization. This, however, did not last long. Soon Americans were debating about the state of these Indians, specifically groups such as the Shawnee and The Plains Indians.
natives that obtained the land previously. The establishment of Jamestown created tension between the colonist and the natives. It led to mistrust amongst the two and eventually the colonist decided to kidnap Powhatan’s daughter in order to gain a leverage (Norton, et al, A People and a Nation: A History of the United States, Brief 10th Edition,39). Due to the demand for more land, the clash between the Natives and colonist started to effect the colonial life, resulting in the need for the British to become involved. This is an example that shows it is impossible for the colonies to self-govern themselves if they cannot figure out an agreement with the Natives. It took the
