Sometimes when evaluating different stories, you find differences and similarities from the stories compared to it’s movies. Authors such as Washington Irving, Katherine Anne Porter, and Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote short stories that were similar and different in many ways. This paper compares and contrasts three literary components that were determined through the analysis of the stories text versus the movie selections.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, originally a book written by Washington Irving, has inspired others to use this similar plot in their books and movies. The lovely and yet poisonous Beatrice, the daughter of the scientist Rappaccini, is the central figure of the story, while her neighbor Giovanni becomes the observer, participant, and interpreter of the strange events that occur within the garden next door. Giovanni sees things that are either all good or all bad. During the story, Hawthorne gives the reader many clues of Giovanni's selfish nature. There were many differences in the story than in the film. Giovanni is from Italy in the book but in the movie, it did not tell where he was from. Another example is that Rapaccini wanted Beatrice to wear a flower in the book. In the movie, he never gave Beatrice a flower to wear. There are also some similarities between the book and movie. In both plots, Beatrice kills an insect in both. Although in the movie it was a butterfly that she killed, they both had similar ideas. In the end, Beatrice dies because of Giovanni and his own poisonous nature. The moral of the story is that every person’s character can be both good and evil …show more content…

As Granny Weatherall’s life flashes before her eyes, the importance of the title of the story becomes obvious. Granny Weatherall has been deceived or disappointed in every love relationship of her life. Her past lover George, husband John, daughter Cornelia, and God all did an injustice by what Porter refers to as “jilting.” This is how Granny gained her strength, by the people that she felt jilted by. There were also similarities and differences in both the book and the movie. In both the book and movie, Granny Weatherall is sick when the story begins. In the book, the story was written in limited omniscient form. The movie was told in first person. Another difference was the book was about her in her home having flashback in bed. In the movie, she was out of bed and working around the house, baking a cake, and turning
