Compare and Contrast Essay
Sometimes when evaluating different stories, you find differences and similarities from the stories compared to it’s movies. Authors such as Washington Irving, Katherine Anne Porter, and Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote short stories that were similar and different in many ways. This paper compares and contrasts three literary components that were determined through the analysis of the stories text versus the movie selections.
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, originally a book written by Washington Irving, has inspired others to use this similar plot in their books and movies. This legend includes a town that is haunted by a headless horseman and a single man's journey. Many years later, this legend was produced as a movie

The lovely and yet poisonous Beatrice, the daughter of the scientist Rappaccini, is the central figure of the story, while her neighbor Giovanni becomes the observer, participant, and interpreter of the strange events that occur within the garden next door. Giovanni sees things that are either all good or all bad. During the story, Hawthorne gives the reader many clues of Giovanni's selfish nature. There were many differences in the story than in the film. Giovanni is from Italy in the book but in the movie, it did not tell where he was from. Another example is that Rapaccini wanted Beatrice to wear a flower in the book. In the movie, he never gave Beatrice a flower to wear. There are also some similarities between the book and movie. In both plots, Beatrice kills an insect in both. Although in the movie it was a butterfly that she killed, they both had similar ideas. In the end, Beatrice dies because of Giovanni and his own poisonous nature. The moral of the story is that every person’s character can be both good and evil …show more content…
As Granny Weatherall’s life flashes before her eyes, the importance of the title of the story becomes obvious. Granny Weatherall has been deceived or disappointed in every love relationship of her life. Her past lover George, husband John, daughter Cornelia, and God all did an injustice by what Porter refers to as “jilting.” This is how Granny gained her strength, by the people that she felt jilted by. There were also similarities and differences in both the book and the movie. In both the book and movie, Granny Weatherall is sick when the story begins. In the book, the story was written in limited omniscient form. The movie was told in first person. Another difference was the book was about her in her home having flashback in bed. In the movie, she was out of bed and working around the house, baking a cake, and turning
“The dominant spirit, however, that haunts this enchanted region, and seems to be commander-in-chief of all the powers of the air, is the apparition of a figure on horseback without a head.” Although the movie Sleepy Hollow is based upon the book The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, there are also distinctions which allow each to tell their own tale. Washington Irving’s short story inspired Tim Burton’s film but did not limit it. The foundations of the two are much the same but their story lines unfold diversely

After evaluating three contemporary selections from Washington Irving, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Katherine Anne Porter, the reader can detect several literary components in the text and the movie to compare and contrast between. Anne Porte, we are able to compare and contrast the literary devices used throughout the stories. Along with those pieces of literature comes movies which were based upon the story. While comparing the book to the movie we are able to see how the producer chose to portray the literary elements such as characters,plot and the settings in the stories, along if he had decided to leave some of the story out and or create an alternative resemblance of a certain scene from the book. When we compare Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow to the 1980 television movie The Legend of Sleepy Hollow starring Meg Foster, Dick Butkus, and Jeff Goldblum, we find that while there are several similarities between the two, there are also some key differences. When we look at various characters as well as the storyline, we see those similarities and differences.
