My family: KK is hard-working procrastinator, which is very contradictory. She achieves many of her goals, but not as fast as it could’ve be done. For example, for her Gold Award in Girl Scouts, the highest award, but it took Mikayla a long time to achieve it because she believed that she had all the time in the world. However, she did learn from that experience because now Mikayla will make events and reminders on her calendar to track her progress and complete work/goals in a timely fashion. Mikayla has a caring, motherly soul because she will put feelings of others before hers, and she will protect everyone and everything that she loves. She has been inquisitive since she was able to talk, ‘Why is the sky blue? What animal is that? Why is the grass green?’ She is a determined individual who is adamant on figuring out and improving the world.
There is a universal ideology that suggests that each gender plays their specific, individualized roles in society: men acting as independent, powerful alpha males, and women being their dutiful submissives. Contemporary narratives depict women as such whereas mythology is rich with goddesses and other female figures who are brave and powerful warriors equal to men. So if mythology can be overflowed with stories about female leaders, how come contemporary narratives have derived from that viewpoint? Sirens in Greek Mythology are a perfect example of the derivation to the new idea of women in society: weak. By examining the myth of Sirens through a feminist critical lens, the question of whether society is “concerned with the ways in which literature and other cultural productions reinforce or undermine the economic, political, social, and psychological oppression”(Brizee Web) will be answered. The mythological legend of the Sirens highlights the superiority of these figures who could destroy by temptation through their melodic voices; modern interpretations of sirens- as in Disney’s The Little Mermaid (1989)- reduce the feminine power of the siren to a contemporary stereotype of the powerless, dependent, subservient woman.
In the story, “The Little Mermaid” there are demonstrations that describe what a heroine is. A female character that is noted for special achievements represents the heroine in a story. Therefore, the youngest mermaid “Little Mermaid” represents the heroine throughout the story. The Little Mermaid is a mystical creature that longs only to seek the handsome prince she laid eyes on. “Once she became human, the witch said she could never become a mermaid again” (Anderesens 185). This is an example of how the Little Mermaid chose to do something incredible and dangerous just to accomplish something she only dreamt of. Not only is the Little Mermaid the heroine of the story, but she also exemplifies other archetypal characteristics. An
In the film The Little Mermaid by John Musker and Ron Clements, a theme that continually portrays itself is how woman are seen in society. In this film, women are defined by their appearance instead of their inner-self or personality by men and women. It also displays that woman are not treated fair. This is expressed in the film through multiple song lyrics and scenes. Ariel, the little mermaid, experiences many occasions where woman in a society are seen differently than men. In the film, Ariel was given an option to live under the sea and live life under the rule of her father, or be on land with her Prince Eric. Although this is clearly not laid out, a man figure is always above Ariel and could convey an idea that

Many believe that Ariel is a bad role model for children, especially young girls who look up to Disney Princesses. Many of these people believe that she changed her body for a man, and that no young girl should be taught to do the same. Many people think that the little mermaid is one of the least feminist princesses created by the Disney company, but unfortunately, these views are incorrect, and have weak supporting evidence. Ariel was anything but an anti-feminist, and actually was an advocate for women’s and mer-people’s rights. The little mermaid is the youngest (only sixteen at the time) in her family. While she may be little, but she made a big impact in her world, and is still making an impact on the world around us today.
How the Little Mermaid is Crucial to the Symbolization of What Many Endure for the Acceptance of Society in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” Many are not familiar with the written story of “The Little Mermaid” but plenty of people would recognize the film version created by Disney film studios. While there are some differences in plot, the personalities of the young girls from the two versions come out as practically identical. These adventurous young women crave the need to know more about a life that they have never experienced before in their entire life.
As a payment for Ursula’s magic potion, Ariel must sacrifice her beautiful voice (Disney). Ariel’s desire for life “where they walk, where they run, where they stay all day in the sun,” is more priceless than her family’s honor, her mermaid fins, and her voice (Disney). In order to keep her land legs, Ariel must win the prince’s love before sunset on the third day (Disney). After many events concerning Ursula’s evil intercessions, Ariel’s dreams become a reality when Eric defeats the sea witch, wins back Ariel’s voice, and marries her (Disney).
Ariel was extremely different from all the other mermaids in Atlantis, not to mention she was the princess. She was an exceedingly curious mermaid, especially anything dealing with humans or land. She was always off exploring and loved spending her spare time collecting and observing human objects that she had found. However, all of these activities and actions were not normal for a mermaid, especially not King Triton’s daughter. Even with all these struggles and criticism, she manages to fight above the mermaids and her father’s sea level, literally, to achieve her hope and dreams she had been longing for.
The shy and quiet mermaid from the original tale evolves to a bright and curious young woman. Ariel focuses more on being human and on the relationship/love aspect of being a woman. Instead of looking more into her immortal soul, we look at her self-discovery as a woman. She becomes the average teenager that falls in love and goes after her dreams. Ariel was unhappy under the sea.
