Palahniuk’s Fight Club and Orwell’s Animal Farm show how it is the nature of living things to rebel against the laws and normality of life. The novel Fight Club begins by introducing the main character, and describes his unhappiness in life. The narrator expresses that he hates his boss and feels like he has no purpose in life. While on a business trip he goes to the beach and falls asleep. When he wakes up he meets a man name Tyler Durden, who has spent most of his life rebelling against society by harassing people and creating chaos. The narrator returns home and reaches out to Tyler asking him to meet at a bar. Specifically, this rule prohibits talking about Fight Club which goes against freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is a right given to every citizen in the United States. However, the rules for Fight Club are not the only things that go against the laws and normality of life. Most people want to avoid as much pain as possible. However, Tyler’s goal is to cause pain for the narrator so that he can learn what it is like to hit rock bottom. The reason is because Tyler believes that a person cannot find purpose in life until they understand that they are vulnerable. Therefore, after almost killing the narrator in a car crash, Tyler turns to him and says, “Congratulations, you’re a step closer to hitting rock bottom” (78). This quote is significant because of the way Tyler says it. He congratulates the narrator for almost dying. Oftentimes, people try to avoid near death experiences since they are traumatizing; however, in this case Tyler looks at it as a successful event.
