In 2005 a discovery by Caltech astronomer, Mike Brown and his team found an object that was only slightly smaller than Pluto. Astronomers found several more object with the same classification in the Kuiper Belt. With these discoveries they figured it was only a matter of time before they found a mass that would be bigger than Pluto. Later on that year Mike Brown and his team reported the finding of a larger mass farther out from Pluto. With this discovery the astronomers began to doubt that we actually had 9 planets in our Solar System.
In 2006 at the XXVIth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, astronomers began to vote on just what a mass needed to consist of in order to be classified as a planet. There were three different
The classification of Pluto as a dwarf planet it did not completely strip Pluto of its Planetary classification. This seemed to be a common ground between the people who wanted Pluto to still be a planet and the people who thought that it should have never been a planet were somewhat satisfied with this decision. Although Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet many people still refer to Pluto as the ninth planet in our planetary system and for some reason many people will always refer to Pluto as
Neil DeGrasse Tyson wrote The Pluto Files: The Rise and Fall of America’s Favorite Planet to examine why Pluto ought not to be considered a planetary body and instead a dwarf planet or Kuiper Belt Object.
Herschel just happened to be studying the stars between 10-11pm. What he did not expect was to find a planet on that fateful night. Herschel thought that what he had spotted was a big star, but then decided that it was a comet. However, he quickly realized that this was no star, it was much more! In this situation, technology made all the difference. Without these high-powered magnifiers, it would have been easily forgotten. Once he formed a hypothesis, how tried to figure out what the planet was not. It was much larger than the other planets. Once he realized that this was an actual planet, he wrote a letter to his colleague about it. This was an exciting discovery for 1787! It was the first planet to be discovered in a more modern
“Perhaps most important for the science of astronomy is that the discovery of Uranus began the search for other undiscovered planets in our solar system. It was the beginning of a second phase in the discovery of planets, during which Neptune and Pluto were discovered.”
When you are faced with a challenge you should always confront the situation, show courage, persistence and use integrity. Col, the main character in the Richard Harland novel ‘World Shaker’ is faced with many challenges throughout the story. However, he does not respond to any of his challenges in a positive manner. Throughout the novel Col proves that he deals with his situations negatively. Though he grows in a sense of character, he’s decisions are still very poor when he isn’t reliant on Riff.
Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh and was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006. This means that for almost eighty years, all of mankind knew that Pluto was a planet. The real trouble for Pluto came in 1992 when David Jewitt and Jane Luu discovered the first celestial objects in a region now called the Kuiper Belt (Weintraub, 2015). Pluto is considered one of the largest celestial objects in the belt (Redd, 2012). However, there are some objects in
Many issues have arisen from the debate whether or not Pluto is a planet. Some astronomers say that Pluto should be classified as a “minor planet” due to its size, physical characteristics, and other factors. On the other hand, some astronomers defend Pluto’s planet status, citing several key features.
As technology improves it is even more likely that we will discover more about our solar system. A great current example of this is the claim of ‘Planet X’. Researchers say that there is possibly another planet in our solar system that orbits beyond Neptune but is large in size. Two scientists recently announced evidence that a body nearly the size of Neptune that orbits the sun every 15,000 years. Since it has never been seen, because it only orbits every 15,000 years, scientists and researchers cannot make a factual claim on the body even though there is strong evidence of its
In elementary school, I only learned about eight planets with the famous saying of, ‘My Very Excited Mother Just Served Us Nachos.’ So, I was never taught to think Pluto was a planet. I saw that it wasn’t planet on the internet and just went to with the concept. However, I wonder now, why can’t Pluto be a planet? Caltech planetary scientist Mike Brown can explain why Pluto is no longer considered a planet.
The lecture states that although many astronomers debated on the topic of Pluto being a planet, it has been proven otherwise. However, a big percentage of the astronomers were not acknowledged with the information at the astronomy conference. therefore, the astronomy department did not fairly vote on that aspect.
"Whoa! Pluto 's dead," said astronomer Mike Brown, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, as he watched a Webcast of the vote. "There are finally, officially, eight planets in the solar system."
Internal Summary/Preview: After discussing the discovery of “Planet X” through the beliefs of Percival Lowell and the actual finding done by Clyde Tombaugh, we will shift to discussing how “Planet X” got the name Pluto.
In 1905 Pervical Lowell was the fist person to notice Pluto and he started observing Neptune and Uranus and he observed a similarity from this two planets and Pluto. After almost 25 years Pluto then was discovered by Clyde Tombaugh and like it was stated in the “Pluto files” Core Friday, Pluto was then named after an 11 year old girl who told her grandfather that “the new world get its name from the Roman god of the underworld “ from there her grandfather passed the name on to Lowell Observatory. Pluto was once consider the ninth most distant planet from the sun , but in recent years research have found that Pluto after all does not fit most of the characteristics that other planets do therefor they have reclassified Pluto as one of the largest dwarf planet in the solar system.
In 1801, Giuseppe Piazzi discovered what he believed to be a new planet. He named the newfound object Ceres, after the Roman goddess of the harvest. Though, soon after its discovery people started discovering similar objects. Soon they realized that these were not planets, but some other celestial body.
In the outer limits of our solar system there is a planet unlike any other, Pluto. Pluto was discovered in February of 1930 by an American astronomer, Clyde Tombaugh. It is the only planet to have been discovered by an American. All though we have known of the existence of Pluto for over thirty years now, there are still many mysteries surrounding this celestial body. Being the farthest planet has made it difficult to study Pluto, Adding to the obscurity of this strange planet is that the capability to send spacecraft such distances has never been achieved. Through the wonders of science and astronomy, there are many things that can be determined, concluded, and hypothesized about this obscure planet.
