Compare And Contrast A Sound Of Thunder And General Zaroff

Decent Essays

I am comparing and contrasting Eckels from Ray Bradbury’s “ A Sound Of Thunder” and General Zaroff from Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”. Both of these characters have very different personalities even though they both love to hunt it was their life passion. But they got bored of what they love doing and they tried to force their hobby to be something it wasn’t. And because they both tried pushing it too far by hunting bigger, better, more dangerous game it came back to haunt them. And that is where my thesis statement comes in, both Eckels and Zaroff got tired of what they loved and they tried pushing it to the extreme and it came back to haunt them. Before you can get to their similarities in pushing their hobbies to the limit you have to see how both characters are different. Zaroff could handle pressure very well in tough situations but on the other hand, Eckels couldn’t. Also, Zaroff was very smart he is able to track animals and humans like a bloodhound dog but Eckels isn’t the smartest on the other hand. He is very cocky and tries to make himself better than he seems. Also, General Zaroff was very brave he always looked dangerous in the eye and never backed down. But on the other hand, Eckels could not stand up to danger when he needed to he wasn’t very brave at all.
Now it is clearly visible that both men are very different but they still both ended up making the same mistakes to lead to a bigger event now we can see how they are different. Both hunters were very dedicated to hunting that was their life passion, they had both been on very many hunting trips throughout their life. But they both got bored with hunting small game they both wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game they both lived for the thrill. For example, in the text, General Zaroff said,”Hunting tigers ceased to interest me some years ago. I exhausted their possibilities, you see. No thrill left in tigers, no real danger. I live for danger, Mr. Rainsford.” (Connell 62) He also said in the story that, “Hunting was beginning to bore me!” (Connell 63). Eckels also wanted to hunt bigger, better, more dangerous game for example in the text, “ The Tyrant Lizard, the most incredible monster in history. Sign this release.
