Commuter Trains In The 1800's

The steam railroad was another form of transportation that was introduced in 1835 and it was a better form of transportation because it moved quicker and could hold many more passengers, but it was also expensive and didn’t always take the people to where they wanted to go because it didn’t stop very often, and only went one route.

Before railroads were ever implemented into American society, there was another form of primary transportation. In the early 1800s, goods and passengers were carried by ships. For some time, boats on rivers, lakes, and the ocean proved to be adequate enough to convey freight and people where it needed to go. However, these methods of transportation often posed problems of being too slow and too inconvenient. First appearing in the 1830s, the railroad business grew and in 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed, allowing people to think about more efficient settlement across the country. Railroads were the fountainhead of American expansion because they provided for town and city creation and development across the entire United States.

The railways became an important system that guided settlement and delivered economic opportunity for much of the United States. Railroads allowed access to places that people had no means of getting to and provided an opportunity to develop cities and towns

Also reflected by railroads was a desire for a new way for society to experience the world. No longer would it take long amounts of time to travel to see sites; you could see America from the comfort of your seat aboard your train. Soon other lines followed throughout the country. Railroads affected almost every aspect of American life. The rapid spread of the railroads provided the basis for a tremendous westward movement of population. It also carried raw material to, and finish product from factories to consumers in a more efficient way (The USA online, n.d.). The railways became highly profitable business for their owners.

After the railroad was completed, the price dropped to $150 dollars.”(History.com Staff). Prior to the railroad the average citizen of America could not afford to travel across the country cheaply. America waited for a means of transportation which would connect them from the Western to Eastern states. The responsibility of creating the railroads were left up to construction companies. Once this invention was created, traveling became quick, easy and affordable. The Transcontinental Railroad could be defined as the most significant change in America, during the 19th Century.

Large engines that use combustible fuel usually drive trains, but electric trains are also being used around the world and have been for decades. Electric trains are used around the world most for transportation of people instead of goods. Their electric motors are powered from a receiver that remains in contact with a wire supplying the electricity that runs parallel with the train. Electric trains are more efficient, cheaper to run, and they can accelerate much faster than their previous predecessors (“Electric Locomotives, The Definition Of Efficiency,” n.d.). Future electric trains will be able to travel faster than ever before, and eventually they will be build all around the United States and other countries to provide extremely fast travel at cheaper costs (“Electric Locomotives, The Definition Of Efficiency,” n.d.).

Many of the environmental problems is caused to use of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide. Use of electric vehicle helps in the reduction of these pollutants by a significant amount leading to controlled pollution.

Another great invention of transportation during this time was the train. America’s first train was invented by George Stephenson in 1822, and by 1825 the train was the first locomotive. Obviously everything at this time was made by hand, and every part of this engine had to be hammered into shape just like a horseshoe. John Thorswall, a coalmine blacksmith, was George’s assistant. The invention of George was very important in America because it allowed transportation from place to place in a quicker time. This boosted the economy by helping distribute many goods all around the country. Even letters were being delivered faster, so communication was increasing.

Murder, a crime which has been illegal in nearly all societies throughout the history of man including the U.S has immensely lucid laws written against it. This law prevents many people from committing murder, however mass shootings still occur despite this law. Why would more laws preventing such crimes stop them? Whenever there is news of a mass shooting or shooting incident, gun laws are always the first thing to be blamed by the media. Saying increasing gun laws and banning assault rifles would stop all these crimes is an overstretch. These people fail to realize that statistics have shown more gun laws would not stop shootings. Making guns illegal would not reduce mass shootings, due to the majority of shootings taking place in gun free zones, it will only stop law abiding citizens from obtaining guns, and thus endanger people more.

Two terms that were available from the components of fiction address were: setting and struggle (individual versus self). Setting can be portrayed as the place and time a story happens.
