Community Retail Pharmacists: A Case Study

The vision in my current work environment is one that is based on keeping retail community pharmacies and pharmacists the face of neighborhood care. For most patients the last person that a patient sees before they are left to manage their own self-medicating needs is the pharmacist. Likewise, the first person a patient calls with a drug related questions or for treatment of an acute illness is the pharmacist. Based on this and the fact that there is a retail community pharmacy within 5 miles of every patient, the vision of keeping community retail pharmacists as the most trusted provider in neighborhood healthcare is an ongoing effort. The association is only one of many of trade associations fighting on behalf of the profession. At any given moment, we can be allies or adversaries to the other pharmacy associations depending on the issue. It is very important to forecast, strategize, and plan to ensure that we remain focused on that vision. The metaphor that is most commonly used in these strategic planning efforts is those that are referenced by Kouzes and Posner as the coach and the locker room. Kouzes and Posner (2012) stated that great coaches are not thinking about the current play, as that execution is up to the players. Instead, they are thinking about the next play. This metaphor works well for my current work environment because strategic planning to protect the vision is one that moves with state and federal politics. Just as a team would not expose its playbook, we discuss our tactics and draft the next playbook. During this process and in the locker room we are all contributors.
