The community chosen for this health assessment is Odessa, Missouri. Odessa is located in rural Missouri, east of the Greater Kansas City area. The small population of Odessa citizens making up a tight knit community. This small community was chosen to look at the population diversity, health concerns for this community and other rural populations and how this community comes together, working together to battle these concerns.
History of Odessa, Missouri Lafayette County Missouri was founded in 1820 and organized with seven other counties in 1821(Lafayette County, n.d.). The gender of the population is made up of almost equal males at 47.5% and females at 52.5% (Odessa, 2015). The median resident age is 31.5 years in comparison to the Missouri median age of 38.1 years (Odessa, 2015). Adults make up the vast majority of the population in this community. The races of the population in Odessa has little diversity to offer. The most prevalent race is Caucasian making up 93% of the population (Odessa, 2015). A slight mixture of races and Hispanic followed Caucasians, then less than 2% was made from black, American Indian, Asian, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander (Odessa, 2015). Looking at the gender and race, the health concerns of this population can be narrowed. Lake Lafayette and Bates City, Missouri are other examples of other communities located in Lafayette County, Missouri. Lake Lafayette both have small populations like Odessa. Lake Lafayette is much smaller in size with a total rural population of approximately 320 people (Lake Lafayette, Missouri, 2015). Bates City is larger than Lake Lafayette, however is still rural with a population of approximately 3,297 people (Bates City, Missouri, 2015). Lake Lafayette as well as Bates City had similar racial diversity as Odessa, with Caucasian making up 94% (Lake Lafayette, Missouri, 2015; Bates City, Missouri, 2015). Despite this being a rural community, many of the residents are not affected by poverty. Lafayette County Health Department reports that the percentage of poverty is 10.5%, less than the Missouri state average of 14.0% (10). The average median income in Odessa, Missouri is $48,932 per household (Odessa, 2015). Also reported, the unemployment rate had lowered as did the families requiring Temporary Assistance for Needy Families in Lafayette County (10).
