The two communication barriers that I experienced during the simulation were a lack of attention and destruction. After introducing myself to the patient, I tried to ask the reason why the patient came to Montgomery college hospital (MC), but there were no answers to my questions. I immediately noticed that the patient was hearing voices, which was telling him to open the door and to answer the telephone. It was very difficult for me to assess the patient. I even told the patient that we can open the door later, for now just follow my instruction. Even though I redirected the patient, it was hard for me to help this patient. On the other hand, this auditory hallucination experience really helped me to understand more about hallucinations,
Recently there has been a growing request for options to telework/telecommute in various departments within the company. I recommend the Human Resource department adopt a policy that will include procedures for selection criteria, approval of planned schedule, work, or project, and managerial oversight. To meet the needs of our employees we recognize having more flexibility in work schedules will alleviate work and family conflict by adopting a policy around telecommuting (Pynes, 2014, pg 265). Having a formal policy in place will minimize any misuse of this perceived benefit and will ensure all requests are considered fairly.
At first I was nervous about what the simulation would entail. As I started listening to the instructions for the Alpha group, I then became overwhelmed. Many scenarios played through my mind along with many questions. When the recording stopped I just sat there in confusion as to what I was supposed to do. Once my group started to interact with each other it became easier to comprehend how the Alpha culture interacted. When the Beta group came over to try joining the Alpha’s it was really frustrating not being able to tell them what was going on and them continuing to do things that aren’t accepted by the Alpha’s. Overall my emotions were befuddled because I had to learn a new culture in a quick amount of time to then inforce my Alpha culture’s beliefs and practices to the Beta
Engel emphasized on communication in his book and I liked how he brought up the topic of introducing yourself to the patient. While working in the hospital I saw so many health care workers walk right into the patient’s room, do what they had to do, and leave. Explaining who you are makes it easier on the patient to understand what is going on.
Fortunately I didn’t, but this did happen to me: as I was closing my eyes, I started hearing these really weird popping sounds. Like, click-click-click. Over and over again – and they actually got louder! Okay, there was nothing – nothing – in the room that might have did that. No fan, no heating, no AC, no television, clock, watch, whatever! It was the most basic hotel room ever. And the clicks sounded as if something was floating above me! Like circling above me, like a swarm of bees or something. I was scared sh*tless, but I just tried to go to sleep. And never opened my eyes until the morning, when the bright sun shone in the room. Going to breakfast, I saw the bullet holes left in the ceiling by Billy the Kid and other saloon fighters, and heard the stories told by the kitchen staff about plates and silverware that would randomly fall to the ground and break, and the flickering lights, and other freaky things which I forgot.
28-30). What is most interesting about these examples is that the majority of the hallucinations are experienced by experts within the scientific community. Clearly intentional, the author masterfully crafted a strong appeal to ethics both by presenting himself as an expert and drawing support from reputable
Surprisingly, research shows that even 15 minutes of near-total sensory deprivation can cause hallucinations on par with psychedelics. (University, 2011)”
Rosenhan's study was done in two parts. The first part involved the use of healthy associates who briefly simulated auditory hallucinations in an attempt to gain admission to 12 different psychiatric hospitals in five different states in various locations in the United States. All were admitted and diagnosed with psychiatric disorders. After admission, the pseudopatients acted normally and told staff that they felt fine and had not experienced any more hallucinations. All were forced to admit to having a
Since we were in the ICU, there were tons of machines monitoring the patients. Whenever there were a few minutes of free time, Alison would bring me into an empty patient room and explain what each machine was used for. It was interesting to see how these machines work to save lives. One fascinating machine that we used with a patient was a MARTI machine. We used the MARTI machine to communicate with a patient that did not speak English. The MARTI machine is similar to Skype or FaceTime and allows nurses, doctors, and other staff to communicate with the patient through an online
Moreover, a hallucination is not receptive to control by the individual who is experiencing it. Auditory hallucinations are among the most common. Individuals who suffer from auditory hallucinations hear sounds or voices that have no actual source (5th ed.; DSM-5). It is common that the individual initially experience the sound as coming through his or her ears. However, sometimes, the individual will eventually perceive the sound as coming from inside his or her head (Romme et al., 1992). David and Nayani (1996) claimed that individuals who suffer from auditory hallucinations may hear more than one voice. The voices can differ in content, comment on the individual’s thoughts and even have a conversation.
In the communication APPs, I learned different things from there, and it impacted my life decision. Communication APPs gave me a chance to communicate with other people from different countries. It contributed me to improve my English or communication skills. In other words, while I was using this APPs, I had a chance to improve my English and communicate with other people from different countries. Here is an example from my own experience. When I was start using this communication Apps, it was a difficult job for me. Since I did not good in English, I had to use the Google translation to help me communication with them. However, during that time I got huge enhancement in English, it leaded me to get a good grade in the English test. In addition,
Musical hallucinations differ from tinnitus in that; tinnitus is when a person hears phantom tones, buzzing, or hissing (Grens, 2014). This can routinely happen after a loud concert or any prolonged exposure to any loud sounds. Musical Hallucinations are the perception that a person hears a specific song or instrumental arrangements playing outside their body over and over again but have no external source. There’s also the difference that tinnitus happens to people that have their hearing and musical hallucinations happen to be people that have moderate to severe hearing loss (Grens, 2014).
All I heard was my pounding heart in my ears. I could feel the rhythm of my heart speeding up, shoving passed people not seeing them fully detailed from my blurry vision, and felt nothing except panic. This past summer I had the opportunity to tour Italy, with a tour group. On our last day, we were visiting the city of Pompeii. We had just eaten lunch in a restaurant, which is a part of a hotel, and very crowded with tourists. I was ready with to go on the tour of the Pompeii Ruins with my sunglasses setting on top of my head and phone in my hand ready to take pictures.
The communication among Pablo, Sam and Lifang Lin, in the simulation of Virtual Meeting exposed some obstacles. First, there was clear lack of professionalism in the meeting. The meeting began by Pablo's introduction that made him sound egocentric. This could have been the reason for Sam in the United States to adapt an attitude problem that triggered the racial remarks he made. The meeting should have had an agenda to guide the participants. Lack of clear set goals in the virtual meeting jeopardized the chances of establishing a strong foundation for a steady communication and commitment. In addition, the participants displayed lack of respect for each other and especially Pablo and Sam. They needed to exercise caution and respect in their talk to promote an atmosphere of a professionalism and inclusive communication during the meeting.
After viewing the hallucinating patient video, I learned that they need our support the most. I never imagined how much hallucinations can make difference in person’s life. The main thing I learned is that communication technique plays an important role while dealing with hallucinating patient. I always used to think that it will be very hard to control and have conversation with hallucinating client. However, this video has taught me how to communicate in calm and effective manners.
I was observing this communication in the downstairs hallway in Wagner hall waiting for class to begin. As I was standing there another class had just been let out, and the students were filing out of the classroom. From the eleven students that walked by ten were either talking or texting on their phone. Although this example of phone use would not be usual in this context a decade ago, this observation is now normal. A decade ago cell phones were not as prominent, but now as students walk through the hallways they bring out their phones for something to look at.
