The Commonwealth of Massachusetts needs to attract other than blacks, because they are more likely to have surgery at low-quality hospitals. The hospital needs to attract Hispanics, as they were more likely to go to low-quality hospitals. The hospital has to change the way we deal with patients such as, a better approach to providing comprehensive primary care that promotes partnerships between patients and families.
In 1969, Massachusetts fashioned the law 40B, famously referred to as the “Anti-Snob Zoning Act”, which allows developers to bypass land use restrictions in towns where less than ten percent of the housing meets the state definition of affordable. There are multiple positions and solutions to friction in Massachusetts largely inspired by controversy surrounding the State's affordable housing law, Massachusetts General Laws chapter 40B between housing advocates and open space advocates. This thesis reviews and critiques the current law, and diagnoses various legislative proposals for the progressive feud.
III. Statement of Facts: Two Philadelphia officers observed Harry Mimms driving a car with an expired plate. They stopped the vehicle to issue a traffic ticket. One of the officers approached Mimms and asked him to step out of the car and produce his license and registration. Mimms alighted, whereupon the officer noticed a bulge under his jacket. Thinking the bulge might be a weapon, the officer frisked Mimms and discovered a loaded .38-caliber revolver. The other occupant was also carrying a gun. Mimms was indicted for carrying a concealed weapon and for unlawfully carrying a firearm without a license and convicted. Following a denial of a motion to suppress in the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, Mimms was convicted. The conviction was affirmed by the Superior Court of Pennsylvania but the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania reversed. The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari and reversed.
Virginia and Massachusetts were both similar and different when it came to economic stability. The leaders of both colonies had similar goals for their settlement to be successful and economically stable. However the ways that they achieved it was different. Massachusetts and Virginia had plantations and estates set up. Since Virginia was better known for its tobacco growth— there were many plantations set up to grow the crop. On the other hand, Massachusetts (being a northern colony) was into seaport and selling fish. Even though both colonies had different estates and plantations, both started to suffer when the population increased due to many immigrants, which caused competition. Many colonists weren't able to find jobs due to an increase
During the !6th and 17th century, Massachusetts and Virginia economy, social, and political were almost the complete opposite. There were many differences between the two colonies. Massachusetts was solely founded on religious experiments as Virginia was not. Massachusetts economy, political and social life differed from Virginia in countless ways. The economies differed mainly because of the harsh area Massachusetts was located in. The soil was very different from the soil in Virginia, and the farms were much smaller. The people in Massachusetts were small farm owners while those in Virginia were large plantation owners. They're social and political life varied widely, as well. Massachusetts colonists were required to be members of the church
Although New England, primarily Massachusetts, and the Chesapeake, primarily Virginia, were settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 they evolved into two distinct societies. This occurred because of their motivations for settlement and the climate of the settlements. In the early seventeenth century, the Puritans settled in New England, founding the Massachusetts Bay area. The Puritans primarily settled for religious reasons, as they were hoping to separate themselves from the Church of England.
In the court case Worcester v. Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Court held in 1832 that the Cherokee Indians and Samuel Worcester created a nation holding distinct sovereign powers. This decision did not protect the Cherokees from being removed from their tribal birthplace in the Southeast.
The Puritans came to New England to escape persecution from the leadership of the Church of England. They quickly established the Bible Commonwealth or a church government. Fur trading, fishing, and shipbuilding allowed the Puritans’ Massachusetts Bay Colony to prosper economically. Additionally, the importance of church and family was evident in close-knit Puritan communities. The migration of Puritans to the New World laid the foundation for the political, economic, and social development of the New England colonies from 1630 through the 1660s.
• Houses were stronger, they had an enhanced diet, brought more livestock, and used manure for fertilizer for better crops.
During the 1600s when England began colonizing in the New World, different colonies had their own concept of freedom backed by their beliefs and/ or motives for settling in America. Massachusetts and Virginia were settled for very different reasons therefore life in their settlements differed greatly. The political, economic, social and of course physical aspects of the colonies were not at all the same, yet they both resulted in their colonies prospering and successfully settling the land. The settlers of each colony had searched for a place to express two contrasting beliefs of what freedom meant to them. Massachusetts and Virginia are two prime examples of how freedom can mean something
Healthcare diversities among healthcare professionals have been a challenge within the healthcare system. There are various publications that state that the underrepresented minorities have a higher chance of not graduating medical school, accruing high student loans, and ultimately were unsatisfied with their jobs (Pololi et al., 2013). This is not only disturbing, but this represents the individuals who are or will be servicing the public on a daily basis. As the population increases, racial differences increase, so to combat these disparities cultural competencies have to come into play within the health-professions workforce. For instance, although African Americans constitute to 13% of the population, in the physician workforce they only account for 4%, also women who are part of the workforce outweigh the amount of men by at least 4%, respectively (U.S. Census Bureau, 2014). Coincidentally, whites make up to 49% (both men and women) of the total U.S. MD active physicians based on the labor workforce statistics of 2013.
I am a Brazilian black male with military experience and diplomatic knowledge who grew up in a low-income household in a developing country. In addition, I have traveled to about 35 countries and am acquainted with people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, ethnic groups and nationalities. These characteristics and experiences allow me to see the world from perspectives that are unusual for most people. Besides being open-minded and non- judgemental toward all my future patients, I personally understand the difficulties faced by people of color, immigrants and individuals from low-income families. In sum, my background and my cultural literacy will allow me to be a sensitive and culturally aware patient-centered care.
Massachusetts and Virginia were the first to colonies to be founded. They were both founded to expand English settlement in the New World. Over the years of the new settlement, both colonies had to find ways to begin their new lives, in the new world, on this new land. They had to create a new form government, to well balanced and equal colony. New economic developments in the colonies, helped to create these forms of government and affect the politics. Massachusetts and Virginia used cash crops and joint stock companies to make money to help create these governments. Virginia was a higher class so they ended up using the higher class to create a form of aristocracy. Massachusetts has more religious beliefs and freedoms, they formed a theocracy.
The government of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was simultaneously theocratic, democratic, oligarchic, and authoritarian in different ways. The Puritans founded the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1628 and wanted a well-established government, but they ended up mixing all of these together. This colony was important because it was one of the first provincial and true governments to be introduced into the colonies. It also provided an example to other colonies to base their governments on.
In a perfect world, race, ethnicity and culture would have no negative effect on the medical care we receive, yet problems do arise and it affects the quality of care the patient receives. Language barrier, poor socioeconomic status, and poor health literacy also contribute to health care disparity. For Lia, it was more than her skin color, it was all of the above, her parents did not speak English and they were illiterate. They had trouble understanding the American healthcare system, had trouble or little interest in adjusting to or understanding the American culture. They didn’t work, which in addition to cross cultural misunderstanding, helped contribute to animosity between the Hmong and the host community, because some in the Merced area did not like or appreciate the fact that some Hmong did not work and relied on welfare to make ends meet. All these factors, contributed to the poor quality of
In order to analyze this project objectively, research will be presented from various academic sources. The institute of medicine (IOM) has done extensive research, at the request of the United States Congress, on the various disparities within healthcare. Their analysis looks at differences in treatment, patient perception, and how individuals of different races and genders act while receiving care. Furthermore, I have out in an inquiry to St. Lukes Hospital, a member of the greater Lehigh Valley Heath Network, to see what type of data they may have on the disparities in healthcare amongst women of different races. The Lehigh Valley serves as a diverse data pool to extract meaningful information from. The demographic make-up of Bethlehem is varied, yet African Americans only account for roughly 6 percent of the population (Suburbanstats.org). The small size of the African American populations will need to be taken into account, but the information should still allow for valid data.
