CHAPTER
I. THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Throughout my life, I have always loved to read, yet I have never read stories like the ones we have been studying during this course. Although I have always loved reading, I never took the time to truly appreciate all the wonders of the literature world. Out of all the authors and stories we studied, I knew the most about Edgar Allan Poe. Poe’s stories have always sparked an interest in me since there is always room for different interpretations of his accounts.
Edgar Allan Poe's career may have been a failure considering what he set out to do, but he did achieve some success and notoriety in his own lifetime. His most successful poem was, of course, "The Raven," a piece he composed to satisfy popular taste. But some of his short fiction was popular as well. As an editor and publisher, however, Poe did not quite achieve the greatness he sought. His legacy grew only after his death, thanks to his literary executor R. W. Griswold, who "won more permanent attention for him after his death by exaggerating his neurotic debility and inherited dipsomania to make him an almost Satanic figure" (Bradbury 206). This paper will examine Poe's poetic and short story successes and failures, and show how he was not quite the "Satanic figure" that the reading public preferred to imagine him to be.
Edgar Allan Poe was a phenomenal short story author. He now is nationally renowned as a result of his works. He did not just come up with some of these stories on his own accord though, rather he lived some of these stories. Edgar Allan Poe’s literature was greatly influenced by his experiences in life. To shed some light on the facets of his life that are seen in his stories, some background information on Poe’s past will be brought to light.
INTRODUCTION: The late and great Edgar Allan Poe was a poet, critic, and literary icon. Many of Allan's mystery and detective stories are alleged to be the first of its kind.No one can question Edgar’s literary talents because they were beyond his time and shifted the way people read stories and poems.Unfortunately, Edgar was still struggling to make a living despite his success as a writer, editor, critic, and former military writer.Edgar’s life was full of strife and misfortune.Edgar lost 3 loved ones due to tuberculosis, which affected him for the worst.Edgar’s unfortunate bouts only fueled his literary skills and further enhance his writing ability to the highest level at that time.Unfortunately, he mysteriously died the age of 40 which
Many high school students wouldn’t expect a poet to be able to write a horror story. Edgar Allan Poe on the other hand can and makes it so the students find it interesting while using experiences from his life and influenced some cultures. When using some of his life experiences to write, Edgar Allan Poe became a very influential person to different cultures and the literary world. Biography
"In one case out of a hundred a point is excessively discussed because it is obscure; in the ninety-nine remaining it is obscure because it is excessively discussed." This quote by Edgar Allan Poe describes his obscure works which have been discussed and criticized in great detail for many years to come. Some readers believe that his works are too dark and eccentric maybe even deathly. Others believe his works to be masterpieces. However, one thing that is not up for debate is the fact that Edgar Allan Poe is a literary genius. Edgar Allan Poe, the creator of the ratiocinative story and the amateur sleuth and leading contributor to the gothic genre, is the greatest author of the mid-nineteenth century.
Edgar Allan Poe’s influence on American literature was nothing short of great; not only was he the creator of the detective story and the horror thriller, but he also influenced many great writers, among those William Faulkner and Fyodor Dostoevsky. While Poe is best known for his horror thrillers, being the creator of that particular genre, he has also fashioned two other literary genres, like the detective and the science fiction genre. Throughout his life, Poe read, reviewed, and critiqued many books for various magazines and papers. Poe did not hesitate to attack what he deemed inferior. “Is purely too imbecile to merit an extended critique,” he once wrote of a novel. Because of his readiness to attack what he believed to be unworthy,
Edgar Allan Poe was one of the best writers and most peculiar to ever walk the Earth. He used more of a darker element than most of the writers of his time and before his time. He incorporated Dark Romanticism into a lot of what he did. He was even known as a Dark Romantic writer. Edgar Allan Poe’s rough childhood was a major influence on his writing, which lead to him becoming a Dark Romantic writer and incorporating Dark Romanticism in his work “The Tell-Tale Heart”, and his writing has influenced pop culture today and many authors after he died.
When Edgar Allan Poe was born in 1809 (Minor 8), the Romantic movement, having begun around 1750, was well underway (“Romanticism”). Despite Poe’s birth taking place nearly halfway through this period, there was still more than enough time remaining for not only Poe to make a lasting impression, but also for him to become the poster child of the movement.
Applying most of his originality and strict style to poetry he showed how a poem like “The Raven” could be popular but also, suit many critics taste. Poe’s different approaches to literature earned him the respect from numerous authors. In conclusion, Edgar Allan Poe wanted people to understand the importance of the writing as well as of the creator. He has a lasting impact in the literature world as an authentic
As many litterateurs will be quick to point out, there are many connections between the author’s life and his resulting works. However, a common false theory among persons is that Poe’s works are a total indirect biography of his life. By skimming samples of a few of his works, one can easily evince that this speculation is fallacious.
The writing techniques of authors today are no way in comparison to Edgar Allan Poe. His way of thinking is expressed in his writing and in a way that puzzles readers but at the same time gives them an idea of what is going on. His path in writing involves a dark setting, which we could see in most of his writings. “Edgar Allan Poe who has a unique dark way of writing “(Estromus 1). Poe’s use of a subtle tone and subconscious motivation of the characters in some of his writings and serious thematic plots , give a very vague image to his readers. “The Cask of Amontillado” relays the confession story of a man’s murder, whose main motive was revenge that was driven from his social status being crushed and hurt simultaneously by the victim in the story. The power of pride being crushed motivates one to seek superiority that reeks of conceit and arrogance.
