The Common Core Standards Desks are aligned individually in rows facing a chalkboard. A red-shiny apple is sitting on the teachers table. Along the multi-color walls are students work. In the back corner of the room there are a few computers. Students are prepped to take an online test. No paper, no pencil. The work is all done on a computer. What was the “old” technique of learning has transition into a “new” way. This new tool is a way to improve a students’ education. It has been voluntary adopted by over 40 states. The standards serve as one of the most promising learning method in years in effort to improve our country’s school system. The issue of creating national standards has been debated for years long before the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers met to develop a plan for creating Common Core standards in 2009 (“Common Core”). The initiative gives states a uniform set of goals for student academic achievement and ‘College and Career readiness’ (Boychuk, Mathis). The Common Core initiative would change the way students take standardize tests in hopes to make them more competitive both globally, and in their higher education. The development to design a new test that the Common Core requires will take time. The two main groups that use federal money to design common-core tests are the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), have worked for nearly four years on their tests (Gewertz). PARCC spokesman David Connerty-Marin states, “There’s a significant difference between this test and tests states typically purchase, “because the PARCC’s test is “Built from scratch” for the common core (qtd. Children improves their ability to think critically, apply analytical reasoning, and comprehend informative texts. The supporters agree that if a student goes to college that it will pay off. Students’ won’t have to take remedial classes. The Common Core is different and challenging. “I can confidently say that the tests is motivation schools to accelerate their efforts to transition to the Common Core,” said Ben Sanders of the California Office to Reform Education (qtd. In Wingert). “And overall, the teachers seem to think it’s worthwhile and it’s testing the kinds of things the kids should be doing. The test is providing some clarity about where we’re trying to go” (qtd in Wingert). The initiative help instructors approach students in a new perspectives. It is too early into the Common Core initiative to have any say what outcome will come to, but is has a positive outlook for our children to have an opportunity to strive in
