Columbus day should not be celebrated because he was part of the Columbia exchange which traded people, animals, and foods. He also had a great thirst for gold like many other explorers. he has also been accused for spreading smallpox and the flu, which killed 70 to 80 percent of the population of the Native American's, but this happen over many decades. holding Columbus responsible is not very logical but some people still believe it because he traveled all over the world and he could have picked up a disease that didn't harm people but could harm a person with a lower immune system from another country. he also called the Spaniards wild, starving, beasts because they tried to take over the Indian's which Christopher Columbus discovered. King
The first reason why columbus day should be banned or changed is Christopher Columbus didn't actually discover America. Where he did land is in a unknown Caribbean island.Secondly during his interactions with the “indians” he used them for slavery and forced the Native Americans to convert to Christianity. Finally the last reason that Columbus Day should be banned or changed is that during the “age of exploration”, Columbus brought many different diseases to the native
Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a holiday because he was very cruel to the Native Americans. In truth it’s very sad what he did. What Columbus did was what some call the American Holocaust. He forced the native peoples to be Christian, murdering and torturing them is they didn’t convert. Columbus pillaged and robbed- eating the food the natives worked hard to get. He forced them to mine, harvest, grow, and plant all of the food and gold. The diseases that were brought killed thousands, wiping out entire groups in a few months. The killing and torture made the relationship between natives and Englishmen worse. Clearly, Christopher Columbus isn’t worthy of a holiday.
Columbus Day is a holiday that celebrates Christopher Columbus an Italian explorer who sailed over 500 years ago with three ships from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean in a daring attempt to expand our knowledge of the known world in hopes of discovering new lands (Obama). He is credited with discovering the New World in 1492. Though this sounds honorable and inspiring, it was basically a search to find new lands in order to claim and take control of them, plunder their wealth, enslave their occupants and murder any who tried to stop him (Zinn). Since the United States is built on the beliefs of freedom, equality, peace, and humanity, I don’t feel that we should continue to honor and celebrate
Some reasons why I think Columbus Day should be changed is because Columbus was treating Natives with violence and put them into slavery. Another reason is that he forced the Natives to convert to Christianity. The final reason is that he introduced new, life-changing diseases.
Christopher Columbus sailed for Spain in 1492 and claimed all islands around San Salvador looking for gold. Spain eventually sent Columbus back to create an Empire. America should not celebrate Columbus Day because of Columbus’ cruel punishments towards others, the way he influenced today's world, and the way he did not prove anything new. Christopher Columbus caused cruel punishment by cutting peoples hands off, making dogs attack the Native Americans, and by silencing the Native Americans. Columbus Day should not be celebrated because he influenced today's world negatively through slavery, stereotyping, and genocide. Finally, Columbus did not prove anything new because people already lived in the new world, he was not the first non-american
Previously, Columbus was the “person who found the Americas,” but that is historically incorrect. We celebrate Columbus day as if he was a hero who saved mankind but he did the exact opposite. Zinn explains how much the Native Americans suffered and their perspective during Columbus's “discovery” of the Bahamas. We learn that because of his discovery, everyone was able to benefit from it but we never learn specifically how his actions affected the Arawaks.
In my opinion, however, I feel that Columbus Day Day should be reconsidered as a holiday. You state that an Italian arrived and discovered the United States. If that were true the land wouldn't already have been populated. The Native Americans were on American soil far before any Italians or Pilgrims came along. To have discovered America, it would have been uninhabited
Columbus Day is a day on the second Monday of October that recognizes the exploration of America. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who worked in the Spanish government who came to the island of Hispaniola in pursuit of finding a shorter route to India. This controversial holiday sparks many argument about why we shouldn’t have the holiday and others defending the holiday. The good does not make for a good argument against all the bad that the day represents, including: taking a land that was not his, the brutal genocide of Natives, and the enslavement of Natives for illogical reasons.
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue in America we celebrate Columbus Day in honor of him being the second person to find American. He is remembered for all of the supposed good things he did, he yet we never speak about the trustees that Columbus has committed.
The second Monday in October is celebrated across America as Columbus Day. It is a celebration of the man who discovered America. In school, children are taught that Christopher Columbus was a national hero. In actuality, the man was a murderer. It is true that he found a land that was unknown to the "civilized" world, yet in this discovery, he erased the natives inhabiting the land. With slavery, warfare, and inhumane acts, Christopher Columbus and the men who accompanied him completely destroyed a people, a culture, and a land. These are not actions that should be heralded as heroic.
In fourteen hundred and ninety-two Columbus sailed the ocean blue. I guess the song forgot the sin, that the Spaniards killed 8 of 10. While Columbus’ voyage is the start of America as we know it, it came at a great cost to the Native Americans. They contracted diseases from the Spaniards, were abused, forced into Christianity and had resources stolen from them. So, the question is, due to the fact that the Native Americans were abused and taken advantage of by the Spaniards, how can we justify Columbus Day remaining a federal holiday? We can’t, it should never be acceptable to ruin one society so that another can advance.
The United States should not celebrate Columbus Day because it celebrates the mistreatment of Native Americans. One quote from the article that demonstrates this is, “a holiday called Indigenous Peoples Day will instead recognize the contributions, and suffering of Native Americans, people who lived in the Americas before Columbus arrived.” This quote demonstrates that Columbus may have improved some lives, but he destroyed others. Every year on Columbus Day, Native Americans are forced to celebrate the murder and theft of their people, lands, and homes. They should not be subject to this cruelty. Another quote that shows the mistreatment of Native Americans throughout history is, “in the 1850s, California’s leaders wanted to destroy the
Columbus Day should still be celebrated because he is the man who brought many cultures to the Americas. Christopher Columbus brought many cultures to the Americas including Native Bahamian food and food from the Taino. This had food such as, maize, beans squash, and seafood. All of these different kinds of food were very different for Columbus and his crew, but it is what made America’s food based around this culture. America would absolutely would not have as much culture as it has today without Christopher Columbus.
because he was the beginning of American holocaust. The American holocaust was ethnic cleansing characterized by murder, torture, pillaging, robbery, slavery, kidnapping, and removals of indian people from their homelands. The legacy of this murder is an affront to all Indian peoples.American holocaust was a time of many deaths, slavery, and torture the holocaust was a very scary time.As a result of this Christopher Columbus is not worthy of having a holiday under his name.
We celebrate Columbus Day every year since 1937. He traveled from Spain to North America trying to find the Northwest passage on August 3rd, 1492. He failed to find the passage ,but instead he found new land. People think as him as a hero ,but most people haveńt heard of the things he had done. People now of today are still debating whether or not if he should have a holiday. Celebrating Columbus Day shouldn't happen. He did horrible things to the natives, children, and countless other people. He shouldn’t have a holiday as it will be shown multiple times and again.
