I have never had an interest in watching M*A*S*H, but I did review the IMDb plot summary to make sure I understood the characters and their roles (Preventative Medicine, n.d.). Colonel Lacy is the battalion commander; responsible for leading the soldiers during war and Hawkeye is the chief surgeon. Colonel Lacy, the egoistic consequentialist, only thinking about what will be in his own best interest by continuing to subject his soldiers to combat and disregard for their life because of love of war. Hawkeye, the utilitarianism, devises a plan that he fells will bring the greatest good for everyone concerned. He decides to perform an unnecessary operation on Colonel Lacy in an effort to remove him from battle. Although Hawkeye actions
The movie “Glory” portrays the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts. The 54th Regiment was the most important militia/army of the others because it was the first. I believe that the movie clearly replicates the scenes and events of the movie, but there are some incorrect and inaccurate information implanted.
Johnny really never knew what the reason was behind the Civil War. He promised his father he wouldn’t fight in the war because Johnny’s emotions would get the best of him but,Johnny believed that the war was to protect the South and its pride so the confederacy would stand as a nation. As Johnny was teamstering his way in the war by delivering to Richmond he was captured by black Union soldiers. The only one Johnny makes friends with is a soldier named Cush.Cush and Johnny become close but Cush doesn’t know how to read or write because Cush was a runaway slave. When Thomas hears of Shaw being appointed to lead the first regiment of colored men, he declares himself the first volunteer. Now, this seemed odd to me at the time because I was aware of his lack of military and labor experience, however, he was not doing it because he was a soldier, but because he wanted to be there to support his friend who has been good to him all this time. When he joins the regiment, he still sees himself and Colonel Shaw as friends, but he quickly learns of the dividing ranks in the military preventing his friendship with Colonel Shaw. Because of the ranks, Colonel Shaw forces himself and Major Forbes to cut the friendship ties with Thomas because Thomas is in fact enlisted and under them. This adjustment proves to be
During the Civil War the only major problem second to getting shot in the face, was a shot to the chest. At the time doctors did not really understand how to treat a wound of that type, and usually the major issue was the negative pressure exerted outwards, leading to the collapse of the lungs and soon after, suffocation. Contributing to this problem, the doctors observed that during their war, the french had an 8 percent survival rate from major damage to the chest, leading to many medical practitioners to simply refuse treating chest wounds. Early into the war, however, soldiers would be blessed with the miracle of knowledge, knowledge of how to close chest wounds. Benjamin Howard, a young assistant surgeon, otherwise known as a cub surgeon,
The critic Shalom Rachman believed Doctor Bradshaw failed Septimus by thinking about the option of putting him in a psychiatric home and not realizing how damage Septimus was after the war. Doctor Bradshaw’s character was a “complex symbol” because he represented Woolf’s idea of knowing something, but not understanding the meaning of the certain item. Rachman implied that Doctor Bradshaw was blamed for Septimus’ problems because he was his doctor even though Bradshaw was not responsible for Septimus’ postwar shell shock. Doctor Bradshaw represented someone with a medical degree can misdiagnose shell shock and depression because the person did not want to believe something was wrong with someone else. Doctor Bradshaw could have seen the sign,
The 54th Massachusetts Regiment aka the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, was the first official all African-American regiment with 1007 black troops and 3 white officers leading them. There was one very heroic man among named Robert Gould Shaw who was one of the white officers. The regiment began in the Boston Common and went down to South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The regiment carried out a lot of operations across these states including the siege of Fort Wagner. Fort Wagner was not necessarily a win but it still showed heroic
John McAllister Schofield was born on September 29, 1831 in Gerry, New York. His early life was normal for a well of child back then school, school and play, but when he turned twelve he moved with his father to Freeport, Illinois. He attended WestPoint military academy and graduated in 1853, but before this he was dismissed and brought back for having poor behavior towards new students. There he left at seventh in his class, and he went on to serve in the military in Florida. Not long after this, he went back to WestPoint where he taught philosophy. In 1860, Schofield took a leave of absence in order to teach at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Coming shortly would be the bloodiest battle ever fought in America’s history.
The Massachusetts 54th was an African-American regiment in the civil war. It was organized by Massachusetts governor John Andrew. After Abraham Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation stating that all slaves are now free. According to the History website, Fredrick Douglas and others tried to encourage black men to join the military. Two of Frederick Douglass's sons join the military. More than 1,000 black soldiers were with the Massachusetts 54th. Their motivation wasn’t to save the union, it was for equal rights. They started out doing manual labor such as building railroads, burying the dead, and supplying weapons. Later on, they are well known for the attack on Fort Wagner. The African American soldiers also faced a lot of obstacles
When Jeff returned, the army broke camp and started the long march to Springfield, Missouri. The sergeant was Millholland, who Jeff liked much more than Clardy. The next evening they camped 25 miles away from Springfield. When Jeff shot his gun to clean it, he got arrested and was taken before Clardy. As his punishment, he got all-night sentry duty. The battle was going to be at Wilson's Creek, Missouri. The north planed to attack the rebels at dawn and by surprise. They failed to surprise the rebels, lost hundreds of men and the battle. The day after the battle, Jeff had to report for ambulance duty. The field hospital was 2 large gray tents thrown together in a clump of trees. When Jeff was scanning the field of people, he saw lots of dangerously injured people, none of them looked happy
In war, the commander in chief makes or breaks the efficiency and effectiveness of the army. The Civil War involved 3 main commanders in chief of the Union and Confederate Army. Through letters written by these three leaders, Ulysses S. Grant, George McClellan and Robert E. Lee, it is evident that their opinions and strategies differed greatly. While Grant considered himself part of the army, Lee separated himself as a ruling commander. Grant’s humble nature and vast knowledge on war technique also made him a more efficient leader, compared to the egotistical George McClellan, another commander of the Union army. Ultimately, Grant and the union army won the war, because of Grant’s hands-on leaderships skills, while Lee lacked confidence in his troops, causing him to remove himself from his men.
Throughout one’s lifetime growth occurs, and the trials and tribulations they face shape their opinions and beliefs of the world. The Death of a Confederate Colonel, written by Pat Carr, shows the hardships Saranell Birdsong, a young girl, experiences and how she conquered her struggles during the Civil War period. Though Saranell’s pain was enough to ruin her emotionally, she was able to overcome and change into a more mature young girl. It is only through tragedy that true growth can take place.
In ‘A Mystery of Heroism,” Stephen Crane opens his story with specific details of a war scene. He writes, “He could now be seen lying face downward with a stirruped foot stretched across the body of his dead horse” and “around this motionless pair the shells still howled.” This scene describes how there are dead soldiers and horses just lying around in the middle of the turmoil. That man is just another dead body to everyone else. This shows the reality of war, violent and deadly and definitely not the pretty picture some paint it to be. Later on in the story, Crane also writes “a lieutenant of the battery rode down and passed them, holding his right arm carefully in his left hand. And it was as if his arm was not at all part of him, but belonged
There were sometimes conflict between the troops, in one instance O’Brien tells of a conflict between Dave Jensen and Lee Strunk who got into a fight over a missing pocket knife. Jensen breaks the nose of Strunk during their encounter. Filled with remorse of breaking his friends nose bowwows a gun and breaks his own nose to make things even. The men laugh and end up making a pact that if either one of them is seriously injured or crippled instead of living like that the other would find a way to kill the other. Later in October Strunk had stepped on a landmine a lost his leg. Strunk was now terrified that Jensen would hold up their pact and kill him. The soldiers later find out that Strunk had died which relieved Jensen of having to kill his
The dominant impression of WWI doctors/surgeons as portrayed in the novel is not good. Throughout All Quiet on the Western Front, doctors play a huge role in saving many soldiers lives. When Kemmerich lost his leg in battle, he was at the hands of doctors who appeared to do nothing and ignore him. The doctors focussed more on the officers who were injured than Kemmerich who was slowly and painfully dying. The situation was so bad that the men had to bribe a nurse to give Kemmerich morphine as he died in the bed. After Kemmerich died, the doctors wanted to move his body out immediately for a new patient; which also showed that doctors had become used to the death and showed no remorse. Later when Paul and Kropp are sent to the Catholic hospital,
A new shop opens up in a small town called Castle Rock. The shopkeeper, Leland Gaunt, always has an item in stock that fulfills the next customers dreams. The only difference between this shop and others like it is the fact that Gaunt only asks for a small financial payment for the items in his shop. To make up for the lost revenue, Gaunt asks the customers to play a "little harmless prank" on the resident of his choosing. Chaos manifests itself throughout the town as more and more tricks are being played. No one knows who is behind it all and only Sheriff Alan Pangborn suspects that Gaunt is behind the increasing violence in this small town. After reading this story and evaluating each character’s identity, I've come to notice that I somewhat relate to the main character Leland Gaunt.
