The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. In the article, “What Is College For? (Part 2)” written by Gary Gutting we see a description of his ideal vision to improve education and the intellectual culture of our citizens. Mr. Gutting emphasizes that preparing students for employment should be the job of the elementary, middle and high school rather than college. He argues that higher education is basically unnecessary for the practice of many professions.

As a high school senior, post high school options are far and few, but the one that shines above the others is the option of attending college. Instead of going straight into the workforce in order to establish some sort of independence, college provides the opportunity to build upon academic skills, gain a step up in terms of work experience, and become more acquainted with the world and adult life without a watchful parent. It is a very impactful experience that can alter the path taken in life but it comes with a very high price, one that many aren’t able to pay and in turn are forced into tens of thousands of dollars in debt. However, the individuals in debt that did graduate have received something that to most of them was all worth it, a degree. With this, they have opened up more paths in life and immediately are more welcomed in the workforce.

Determining college readiness is an essential part in determining who will qualify as a good candidate for admission into a college or a university. In today’s modern society, college signifies much more than just pursuing a two or four year degree. College ready means that students need to be prepare for college level education to be able to succeed or do well in credit-bearing college courses without the need of remedial coursework. Being college ready refers to the level of knowledge and skills students are required to possess in certain subject areas such as mathematics, reading and English and to be successful in any and all future accomplishments. Students need to have good communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills to be able to succeed in college.
