The evidence provided by the summative assessments demonstrates that about 19/25 students have meet the objective goal. The majority of students met the objective goals for this unit but could definitely improve. According to data, they are able to construct a college ready response using relevant topic sentences, context, evidence and analysis. 18/25 students receive a perfect score when it came to paragraph construction and maintaining a coherent paragraph while 5 students received 3/4 and only 2 students did not meet proficiency. In addition, the data also demonstrates that most of my students can infer and construct a thematic claim and support it with evidence from the text using class handouts, class discussions and the text. Although all students used the “SIFT” strategy to analyze and identify literary elements, student 3 was not able to successfully use academic language like student 1 and 2 did. I did notice this trend in where most of the upper and mid level students were using academic language such as referencing imagery, symbolism and figurative language my lower level performing students were not. They indeed used the literary elements since the “SIFT” strategy graphic organizer enabled them to do so or at least reference it, they seem like they did not use such language in the analysis because perhaps they thought that it was meaningless or even were unaware of using the terms beyond the graphic organizer. However, using the data from the assessments it seems that student 1 and 2 are able to read, analyze, infer and construct a theme out of a complex text instead of just summarizing what the poem is about; therefore, it demonstrates that students can successfully construct a thematic claim when reading poetry using textual
