Thesis: HBCU’s are necessary for the future of democratic America because they better prepare African American students as individuals and for the workforce.

Attention Step: Haley Edwards, author of the article titled “But Can America Afford This Approach to Solving Student Debt?”, from the Time magazine, published November 30, 2015, tells a story of a woman named Allison Minks, who owes an amount of $99,326 in federal student loans. Mink is a 35-year-old mother of two and her full-time job as a counselor at a nonprofit clinic does not begin to cover her student loan debt. Tired of being in debt, Mink went searching for a solution and she found a program that says if she works in public service, she can get loan forgiveness after just 10 years. In other words, because of this program, Minks now pays an affordable amount each month and she’ll be scot-free before she is 45. But, Mink is only covered

Black Alliance for Education Options is an organization that was created to help black children with getting an education. “BAEO was officially launched in August 2000 after African-American educators and parents held a series of meetings in Milwaukee and Washington, DC. BAEO’s co-founder and chair is Howard Fuller, the former superintendent of the Milwaukee public schools and a Marquette University professor.” (Activist Facts) By helping they make it possible for African American families with low income to be able to send their children to either public, private, charter, or even be home schooled. BAEO is all for what the children need and wants.

Money in the form of tuition, government funding, and personal donations allow institutions to fund programs and ultimately make the college experience enjoyable to current as well as prospective students. Historically black colleges lack both the government funding, personal donations which makes it much harder for them to appeal to students. Due to lack of funding, many HBCUs are dated facilities, lack scholarship opportunities and offer fewer programs for students looking to apply. Many HBCUs have loss accreditation in a number of programs with contributes to the decline of enrollment and furthermore a loss of potential revenue. However, regardless of the harsh reality many of these colleges are facing, their impact on society and most importantly in the black community is one that can not be refuted. Whereas, Predominantly White Intuitions(PWI) serve to instruct and educated the opposite or in other words those of Caucasian descent.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities were established for African Americans during a time of strict segregation. During slavery, to keep African Americans afraid and submissive, White Americans had laws in place making it illegal for them to learn how to read and write. “For most of America’s history, African Americans who received a college education could only get it from an HBCU. Today, HBCUs remain one of the surest ways for an African American, or student of any race, to receive a high quality education.” The first Historically Black College and University to be established is formerly known as the Institute for Colored Youth founded by Richard Humpreys in 1837, approximately 26 years before slavery ended. “Today, this school is better known as Cheney University of Pennsylvania, the oldest African American institution of higher learning.” Two other institutions that were later established prior to the Civil War are Lincoln University founded in 1854 and Wilberforce

oday, society stresses the importance of postsecondary education to students due to the countless ways that an associates, bachelors, masters, or doctorate can enhance an individual future. For an individual to reach financial security in the United States’ economy it is basically mandatory that they have received a college degree. Postsecondary education will provide skills and knowledge that will prepare individuals to be successful within their career as they compete for leading positions. Overall as an individual receives a college degree they will become more likely to experience job security and financial security, and this is important to most as they hope to live a stable life. In college, students are taking as many as one hundred credit hours which contributes to most also accumulating student loan debt as they try to finance their education. Even though the completion of a postsecondary education will contribute to a graduate obtaining a respectable income it may also cause graduates to suffer from high student loan debt which will negatively impact their finances far into their adulthood. R.J. Matson created the image above to emphasize how student loan debt negatively impacts student and changes need to be made to avoid stress caused by the debt.

In recent decades, student loan debt has increased dramatically causing a so-called, “education bubble”. This ‘education bubble’ is essentially the ‘housing bubble’ within higher education. The Federal Government, like those in the housing market crash in 2008, are lending money to those who receive a low income and can not afford college. According to The Weekly Standard, “the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that during the past decade, student loan debt has nearly tripled and the number of students with debt has risen by 70 percent” (Cochrane). This report examines the increasing trends in the amount of debt students are graduating with. The purpose of this report is to prove why these trends need to be stopped, and how they can be stopped. After viewing the statistics from 1993 to the present it will be obvious that student debt is not rising at a steady pace, but that its growth is leading to large financial burdens by many students. Recommendations are given about the actions that can be taken by not only students, but everyone to help improve this dire situation. Facing a seemingly massive debt can create a scare tactic to continue on a path toward a higher and exceptional education. Although there are controllable factors to help lessen the weight of student debt it creates a wall of challenges toward furthering ones education, because of the fear of falling into a seemingly large debt Canadian students are afraid to maximize their education, prohibiting Canada to create and maintain a stronger and more skilled work force.

In America being Black would usually mean that you are discriminated and you are living in poor and horrible conditions, at the same time the neighborhoods would be crime infested. If you do not fall under these conditions then you are well known because you are a basketball player or a rapper. In my life I always try to stray away from these stereotypes and false judgements about all black people. There are a few black people that follow under the negative stereotypes but why do a couple of bad apples have to justify for the whole bunch?

In like manner, another positive benefit of B.G.M can be seen in the boost of marketing and business sales performed by black women. In the world of business we tend to see markets almost entirely dominated by non-people of colour, interlacing with lack of exclusiveness as these markets do not often supply everyone’s needs or wants leaving a fraction unable to participate.
