College campuses have seen a rise, in the epidemic of Sexually transmitted diseases. Sexually transmitted diseases have quickly become a household name amongst Americans. The dangers and health issues related to acquiring a STD has been the reason why more attention has been brought to the STD epidemic. The reason for this attention is to hopefully, slow down the rate of STD’S amongst students. There is a very astonishing fact stated by the Agape Pregnancy Resource Center, “Nearly 80% percent of people that are infected with STD’s do not know it. ("Agape Pregnancy Resource Center") The use of condoms, knowing your status, and the practice of abstinence are very effective ways of avoiding contracting STD’s. If we do not make students …show more content…
Some may ask but condoms are latex and I’m allergic to latex, what should I do? There is to be no worries, condoms are also made with other material for people who are allergic to latex, therefore there is no excuse for not protecting yourself. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states “Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens. ("Centers for Disease Control and Prevention") Thus aiding in the reason why condoms are so important, to maintain healthy sex life’s. Next, a very useful way to stay STD free is to know your status. Most students today have no clue they are infected and unknowingly pass it on to partners or spouses. The government has made available health clinics where check up’s to know your status on STD’s are free. Clinics are also places where treatment can be given, if a certain STD is found and is treatable. Many students are embarrassed or scared to know their status and would rather just live their lives, not knowing their status. This mindset among citizens is very selfish, which can lead to the danger of others. In the sense of a woman knowing her status, she will be able to determine if birth is still an option if a certain STD has affected her fertility. Offspring’s are also kept safe, so parents can make wise decisions on whether diseases would be passed on off
“Some men and/or women have allergic reactions to the rubber used to make latex condoms” (Condoms).
Studies have also shown that abstinence-focused programs have failed to reduce STI rates. The American Sexual Health Association states, “More than half of all people will have an STD/STI at some point in their lifetime,” (“Statistics”). Comprehensive sex education would teach teenagers how to improve their sexual health, prevent unwanted pregnancies, and prevent sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Providing students with this information does not encourage them to participate in sexual activity sooner. Several findings show that, “[Comprehensive sex education] effectively promotes abstinence and may delay sexual debut, reduce sexual frequency, reduce the number of sexual partners, reduce STI risk, and increase the likelihood of consistent contraceptive use,” (Jeffries 173). Comprehensive sex education will be beneficial to students by teaching them how to have sexual intercourse safely, if they choose to not remain abstinent.
First, I would like to bring up one of the alternatives to the condom dispensers. This would be awareness training for the AIDS crisis. I think that my fellow students should be given all of the facts about this disease and how it affects them. To place a condom dispenser in the restrooms is just applying a band aid to a bad wound, but it doesn’t address the real issue. Most college students suffer from what I like to refer to as the invincibility factor. They are young and feel like that would never happen to them. We need to provide statistics and real world stories that the students can identify with. An example of this would be the statistics from 2009 where 39% of all new HIV infections in the U.S occurred in people between the ages of 13-29. That same age group only made up 21% of the U.S. population. Students need to know that they need to really examine the situation and there partner. There was a story in the news recently about a young man who knowingly infected over 30 individuals and
The more frequent occurrence of STDs in the younger generations are also based upon the multiple barriers in retrieving the benefits in STD prevention services which includes the lack of health insurance or inability to pay, no transportation, embarrassment of the services in the facilities, and worries of discretion. (STDs) According to the US Department of Health and Human Service, twenty five percent of sexually active adolescents have already obtained an STD. (Parillo) The severity of the issue is approached with the control strategies and educational strategies. In which these educational strategies are more effective when it involves a big health educational program that is provided to our minors. The young populations that are particularly affected by STDs are the young women with a low income for it is easier for a female to receive an STD compared to men. And with those women having a low income, they are not able to access the services that are being provided to them. Today, four in ten sexually active adolescent girls have obtained an STD that can cause infertility and death; also two thirds of adolescent boys have HIV diagnoses.
Latex has been used for a long time within the manufacture of condoms; it's stretchy, long lasting, and enormously amazing for stopping the transmission of STIs and as a method of family planning. Nevertheless, increasing numbers of participants - each guys and females - document antagonistic reactions to latex condoms and to find that they're unable to proceed utilizing them without nasty part results.
There are so many people in this world with an STD that know they have it and will not tell others’ that they sleep with, so they spread it. Especially on college campuses. There are also people who do not know they have an STD yet, but as long as they do not know and are having sex they can be spreading it to many others. An STD stands for sexually transmitted disease. Some of the STD’S that they are spreading are life changing and irreversible.
guys who can't tolerate latex may just decide upon to make use of polyurethane condoms rather. These are constituted of a plastic that does not normally cause a reaction. At the same time it is more high-priced than latex, it presents equal protection in opposition to each STDs and undesirable pregnancies.
Societies are becoming more aware of the challenges the AIDs crisis are presenting to the communities. The government, along with various organizations are coming together and making efforts to restrict and prevent this number one highest growing world epidemic from transmitting from one person to another. Colleges are also coming together to prevent this disease. The decision to install condom dispensers in all rest rooms across campus was reached as a result of this increase in spread of AIDS and pregnancy rates on campus and it is a one-step process in keeping AIDS and pregnancy rates down. Despite the necessity and importance of this solution, it still raised a few eyebrows among students, professors and parents .While some people might view this recent act by the administration as just another one of Camden County College’s shenanigans, whereas, it is a well needed solution to an issue that is gradually becoming a pain in the neck. Students need to understand
This research study explored the intention and belief’s about getting tested for a Sexual Transmitted Disease (STD) with college students. Most STD show no signs or symptoms, so they easily go undetected. Since STD’s go undetected in many people, it is easier for the infection to spread from person to person. College students are at the most risk for coming in contact with an STD. Researchers want to discover what factors such as, attitudes, norms and perceived behavioral control, contribute in a college students decision about getting tested for an STD. Secondly, researchers want to explore the belief’s that may differ between an intenders (willing to get tested) and nonintenders (unwilling to get tested) of STD testing.
As many people may know, there is a lot of unprotected sex amongst college students. Participating in this activity not only leads to pregnancy but it may also lead to Sexual Transmitted Diseases. Here are a few statistics concerning college students and STD’s…
The aim of our campaign was to raise awareness by educating students and the public on safer sex and sexually transmitted diseases. In order to do this the objective was to produce a stand that will be based in the university of Huddersfield student union and educate students and the public on sexual health by encouraging them to come to the stand and ask questions, as well as participate in various activities. The target audience was well suited for this topic as the younger population especially of university age are more likely to contract an STI. In order to
I believe that the best way to help prevent the passing of STIs is through proper education. Our young adults deserve to know the proper way to protect themselves and the risk of having unprotected sex. Without proper education on prevention methods our STI rates will not drop. These education methods need to be delivered in way that is appropriate as well, they must be able to get the class involved on the topic and make sure that they understand it. I know that when I was in school anytime we had a sex education class it was delivered in a way where questions were not easily asked. It was more of a situation where you are told the information and do not need to worry about it afterwards which is completely wrong.
One of the best ways to stay safe is to wait until after marriage before being sexually active, this will also decrease the rate of disease. According to the Center of Disease Control in 2010 “about 65 % of STD’s contracted this year will occur in people under the age of 24”. Abstinence-Only Education focuses on the risks to avoid and help youth so that they would not be vulnerable to harm. The program teaches teenagers to wait before having sex until after marriage and remaining faithful afterward is the best choice for physical health and a healthy, happier relationship. Abstinence-Only Education educates us about the realities of STD’s and the best way to prevent them.
The United States sex education poorly educates students on how to protect themselves from both unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease. When one looks at data comparing the United States to countries with comprehensive sex education, you can see the significant difference in numbers of these issues. You can also see how the lack of education among students leads to more sexual harassment towards females. In order to combat these issues, the United States should put in place a better education strategy that teaches young adults how to have safe sex that prevents unwanted pregnancy and STIs, instead of stressing the importance of abstinence.
As with many other diseases, prevention is key. It’s much easier to prevent STDs than to treat them. The only way to completely prevent STDs is to abstain from all types of sexual contact. However, if someone is going to have sex, the best way to reduce the chances of getting STDs are by using condoms.
