This year on my 15th birthday, I was given a ring by my aunt. It is a thin, plain, gold band. It is, dented, dull and by today’s standards not very flashy but it has sentimental value. The importance of the ring is the story behind it and what it symbolizes: my great grandfather went through years of struggle and sacrifice to purchase a wedding ring for his wife, my great grandmother. Even though they were both born and raised in Italy, they wedded in America….to pursue a better life. The ring was passed down generation to generation so that our family members could cherish and preserve the story of our roots. Your family may have a special keepsake whether be a locket, or pictures. But as A,ericans there is one family heirloom that we have inherited. Just like this gold ring, the Constitution is the family heirloom of the United States that as citizens we have been entrusted to cherish and maintain! Our heirloom the constitution has been passed down for 227 years from our forefathers. The 39 men that braved the incredible responsibility of creating, with quill pen and parchment, a document that would govern their generation but would also be relevant for many generations to come. When you think about the Consitutition or exercise your freedoms it granted you, you may not realize the sacrifices that went into either. When an heirloom is handed down, the next generation is educated on its significance. I want to thank the American Legion,by sponsoring this competition, as it has opened my eyes. I realize the prvilege I have as being an American citizen. But I also realize that I have a duty to my country as well.
