In a team that counts 19 person, we work on organizing one major conference where we teach young students about global issues, politics and diplomacy. We push them into a moderated debate where they follow certain rules of procedures, where they learn how behave diplomatically, think logically, and discover logical fallacies in other members’ speech. My tasks basically focus on searching potential sponsors, contact them and try to set a sponsorship agreement with them, also one of my major tasks is to promote the Initiative’s media image, by attending Radio and TV shows, write articles and send them to different newspaper periodically. Before reading chapter one, I was unaware of how many acronyms are used to describe emergent bilingual students. LEP, ELL, EL, CLD, ELCB, ESL, LM, NCLB and LEP were some of the acronyms used, and I was only familiar with one (ESL). I also found it interesting how they explained why they believed Emergent Bilingual was the best term to use. Even when we discussed the topic of acronyms in class, I enjoyed listening to everyone’s opinion on which acronym they found most appropriate to use. After reading chapter one and being involved in the class discussion, I found Emergent Bilinguals and English Language Learners the most appropriate acronyms to use.
On Friday night roughly around 8 pm I arrived at a hookah lounge called café Mawal. Since entering the building I observed many average heighted men with tan complexions, tic eyebrows, and many of them with beards. They spoke loud yet joyfully. I recognized that they were all Arabs, from the dialects of the language they spoke I can tell they were from numerous Arab countries. Upon sitting down I was able to overhear numerous conversations from the tables around me, indicting there’s no such things as speaking with our indoor voices. I noticed there was a bunch of young couples, many of them without any rings on their finger, but because of the tendency of speaking out loud I was able to over hear their conversation. They were flirting with one another and talking with such profound love, but while I was hearing this I didn’t see any physical interaction.

Becoming an emerging bilingual was a scary experience since I recall my first year as an emerging bilingual. I became an emerging bilingual when I had to transfer elementary schools prior to starting 4th grade. My Kindergarten education through 3rd grade was given to me in Spanish, so when I had to transfer to Kettering Elementary school to start 4th grade I was terrified with the fear of not being able to communicate with my peers and teacher. I recall my first day in 4th grade, arriving to my classroom and realizing that my fear had become my reality. The majority of my peers were White I would say that about 90% of the entire school was white including the staff. There were about three to four Hispanic students in which I was introduced
TeckFarms third employee, who is also resisting the change, is Roberto. Although Roberto was promoted and also received a pay increase after the merger, he is fighting the change by taking advantages of his new added role. Roberto is acting unprofessional by browsing the Internet and taking more breaks than any other employees, while choosing to focus only on the Spanish-speaking calls and leaving a huge burden on his colleagues. Even though Roberto completes his work conscientiously he does it only half the norm, as he refuses to take other calls besides Spanish, even though his promotion did not eliminate this responsibility from his daily work. Because of this situation the other employees are being disgruntled which makes the management’s job more difficult. Roberto’s resistance to the change is mostly
If you are bilingual then you are at an advantage over people who can only speak one language in the employment world. Many companies now have dealings and trade throughout the world meaning there is a high demand for people who are bilingual to fill bilingual jobs.
UT Dallas campus is ranked amongst the highest in ethnic diversity but there is still a significant gap in terms of African American representation (5%). As a African American women, I believe I can contribute to the school's diversity due to, not only my ethnicity but my unique perspective, education experience, and community involvement. I grew up in neighborhoods and attended public schools that were minority dominated up until high school, where I transitioned into a primarily White and Asian magnet program. The transition was arduous both academically and socially, trying to balance the large workload /AP courses while learning to adapt to the cultural differences. I read a book called Social Linguistics and Literacies by James Paul Gee, and one of things I noted were the different types of discourses. A discourse is written or spoken communication that you either learn or acquire. With primary being one of the discourses that Gee mentions, I thought it was appropriate to write about language. Primary discourse is defined as our first social identity and something of a base within which we acquire (Gee, 165). We acquire a primary discourse from our intimate relationships such as your family.
Currently, here at TCNJ, when I would walk down the stairs, grab lunch, or even go to class, I would see visually impaired people walking as if they were just like us. I remember a time when I was on line to grab dinner, and a young woman, who was visually impaired, stood in the middle of the cafeteria because she was lost. Due to the fact that I just arrived on campus, I did not have a clear sense of direction, therefore, I could not assist her. However, another young woman decided to help her. "I could do it!" was the phrase that I overheard the visually impaired young woman say. Not only was she made felt as if she was not capable of performing such task, but as if she did not fit
My interest in Spanish emanates from my experiences growing up in a town that is predominately Hispanic, as well as being placed in a Spanish based dual language program in kindergarten up through eighth grade. Being one of four students in my class who spoke only English, I experienced the challenge of having most of my peers speak a different language than I did. If I had not learned Spanish, I would not have made as many close relationships as I had in those 9 years. I had the unique opportunity to learn Spanish mostly through immersion, as well as assist my Spanish speaking classmates in learning English. Becoming bilingual is a challenge, but language barriers break down through the years and productive communication becomes effortless.

A bilingual journey from two different cultures, Amy Tan and Richard Rodriguez recounts their joys and pains of growing up in an english speaking country. An American born Chinese, Tan was born to immigrant parents from China, while Rodriguez hails from a spanish American-Mexican background, and just like Tan, was also born and raised in the United States. Although both writers grew up in native speaking homes, each varied in terms of parental influence on their second language.
Additionally, the experience of being in a different country and different culture helps understand how challenging a migrant or minority group students might feel. The group work helps students work with local students, which can assist in building strong team bond and team spirit and ultimately integrate in the new society. Having different perspectives make students reflect and take positive criticism in a fairly good manner. The most important reflection is that working in teams makes understanding of topics easier. The discussions and repetitions of the concepts make understanding of the difficult themes more accessible and therefore, students feel more confident and participate more in class . Another interesting aspects of how the brain and language work in bilinguals and how speech impairment functions, gave me a better understanding to the difficulties students might come across.
It really is a gift to be able to write and to discover the endless possibilities that come with being able to write. One of the biggest privileges that I have, in this case writing, started at a really young age in the city of Dallas,TX. I believe I was around 6 years old at the time and in the first grade of elementary school. While in Dallas, I lived with my mom and grandpa and attended the same school that my mom taught at. I had started my first year of elementary as well as my first year in a bilingual class where I was taught to read and write in both english and spanish, and it wasn’t because I didn’t know how to speak english, but because both of my parents wanted me to later on be able to read and write both english and spanish fluently. Words as "bilingual" and "multiculturalism" express much more than someone's ability to speak two languages and to be familiar with more than one culture and so, the need to undrestand the depth of these concepts is imperative. Their significance is structured in layers, reffering to code switching, emotions, sculpting the personality, identity and cultural scripts, layers which are connected in a complex way.
