The human brain is not fully developed until someone is in his or her mid twenties. Therefore, the statement “the brain development has finished by the time children reach puberty” is not true. Although it does not completely develop during puberty, the brain does go through significant changes. By this time many, basic functions needed for life are developed, but the frontal lobe is still not completely developed. This means that until someone is around the age of 25 he or she is neither able to make the best decisions nor to have the best judgement. Two characters that I choose for this assignment are John Bender and Brian Johnson. In reference to Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, I categorized Bender and Brian in formal operational stage because of their age. Besides, both of them also shows characteristic of adolescent egocentrism. As for Bender, we can see that he had developed the sense of invulnerability because he had taken many physical risks and do not think about the negative consequences of his actions. Brian shows personal fable when he overestimate his own abilities, he believes that he can “handle” the subject, but when he failed, this personal fable had lead him to depression and had attempted suicide as a solution for his problem.
Brain maturation is an important topic to consider when answering the question of when a person becomes an adult. The brain has the capacity to reach maturity by the age of 21. Laurence Steinburg in What the Brain Says about Maturity states, “Indeed, some brain regions and systems do not reach full maturity until the early or mid-20s”. This tells us the brain has the potential to reach maturity by the age of 21. As Steinburg is suggesting, major developments in the human brain are taking place during maturation and much of this process can be completed by the age of 21.
I handed my infant niece, Harper, a set of keys, thinking she would shake them and giggle at the noise they made. I thought this because in Piaget’s developmental stage, sensorimotor, it states that infants learn from experimenting and their main focus is what is happening in that very moment.
