The social issue that was chose for my lesson was centered on the use of coal. Coal is an ever growing problem around the world, and students need to become more aware of the negative effects that coal causes because many people are losing sight of the cause and effect between our coal use and our environment. The topic is interesting because even though most individuals have a drive to decrease their carbon footprint and are making necessary changes to use natural resources are energy sources, the United States of American is still very dependent on coal. It is important for students to become more aware of their energy uses and know the impacts that come along with energy consumptions. Students may not realize the impacts that coal has …show more content…
My peers were asked to begin the task without little explanation as to why we were focusing on coal. Therefore, the activity did not seem to impact the students, or promote a connection to the activity that would cause them to reassess their own energy consumptions, or desire to make changes to conserve energy. The students made warm comments as to how great the activity was and cool comments on how it could be better. One cool comment recommendation was to slow down my language when presenting the lesson activity to students. This recommendation is accepted and appreciated because I did become wordy; I felt that in order for my peers to form a connection to the activity they needed as much information as possible. I decided to use the cool comment to make changes to my lesson, such as make the activity simpler so that it does not cause students to become frustrated or …show more content…
In developing an activity I need to work on keeping my activity focused around my objective. I noticed that I was trying to get the students to do more in the way of multiplication and division than one measurement conversion. Although this activity did have a lot of math in the form of multi-step procedures, I did this to challenge my adult peers when I should have created the activity for a fourth grader. As far as presenting, I feel that I could improve the lesson by making several key points that can be presented within the activity or the opening of the activity that would help to impact student to understand why we are focusing on this particular social
The pollution is leaving our footprint rate out of control! Knowing that they have gotten rid of all the coal generators is a big reduction of the ecological footprint. Without the generators burning off the coal, the pollution will stay at a lower rate causing the footprint to decrease. It is more sustainable now than before because our city doesn't have to worry about trying to maintain the pollution levels as much as we used to and we can focus on more of the major projects.
In terms of clean coal technology, Oscar supported his argument better. He does so by providing specific, relevant, and accurate evidence in favor of his argument. He also stays on topic. unlike the opposing author, Alex.
Before any activity, the pupil will need to know what they are going to learn, why they are learning it and how the assessment will take place. The teacher will discuss these with the pupils before the session and when each group of children sit down to start the activity they will be explained to them again. As the pupils get used to assessing their own work, they will find it easier to look at their own work naturally. As well as the objective for the activity, the pupils will need to know their own personalised learning goal so that they can integrate them. One example of how we do this at our setting is by having a learning activity
I try to make the activity as fun as possible in a way that evolves the teachers plan but also suits my teaching style and methods. I usually try to turn all activates whether it be numeracy, literacy or science into a group activity so each child
When they were doing the activity I was watching them how to do the activity. Sometimes I asked them some questions to make sure that they understood completely. I observed all pupils in my group loved to play with the colourful shapes and they separated them in the right circle. This activity was very simple but through that the pupils can recognise the all type of shapes. When we finished Miss B suggested each group should check other group work and they should find if there is any mistake. While my group were checking other groups work I was with them and supported them with explaining more.
The development of science and technology has led to people considering using alternative fuels to generate electricity. There are many alternative fuels that can generate electricity, such as natural gas, nuclear energy, wind energy, hydraulic power and so on (Fossil Fuels Used to Generate Electricity Power Plant Emissions of North America). According to the statistics by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in 2009, the usage of coal was still the largest source to generate the power. Sources of electricity in the United States were generated by 44.9% of coal, 20.3% of nuclear, 23.4% of natural gas, 1% of petroleum, 6.9% of hydroelectric conventional and 3.6% of others (Electric Power Monthly with Data for February 2014). Coal
Envisage a world where only the twinkle of candlelight illuminates windows in the night, warmth is provided by wood stoves, and horse drawn carriages provide transportation: a world without energy provided by fossil fuels. One might think this is the world of our forefathers and of bygone days; however, with staggering increases in energy demands perhaps such a world may not be so far from reality if humanity fails to adapt to these changing needs and how we produce energy to meet global energy requirements. There is no doubt that the greatest issues affecting humanity today are that of pollution fueled climate change and energy insecurity (Jacobson and Delucchi 1154). A number of solutions have been proposed in efforts to reduce our dependence
Coal companies are struggling trying to clean up rivers and mountains. With a 1 billion bill they needed to try to get enough money to pay them. In my opinion they need to have a fund that people could put money in their box to help pay their debts off. Not everyone can work enough to have that much money to pay those kinds of debts off.
Without coal, humanity and society would be a very different place. The industrial revolution would have never happened. Therefore, the transition from man made objects to machine systems, the factories that span the earth, and the overall change that came over the world both physically but also for humankind would be vastly different. Instead, we would be still using water wheels to power most things. Electricity, heat, steam, steel, chemicals, and many more important products from coal usage wouldn 't exist if coal was non-existent. We wouldn 't have spawned the age of innovation, which brought about electricity and oil, which vastly improved society and have brought us to the technology-filled world we have today. However, coal has also negatively impacted the earth in an ecological way. Although the usage of coal has negative effects on the environment, the benefits gained from its use far outweighs the disadvantages, which makes coal have a large, and overall positive impact on society. This will be proven by analyzing the uses of coal in our present society, the environmental impact coal has had on the earth and how the dependence on coal makes a large network of supply and demand, which allows other nations to profit off each other.
When coal is being transported by rail it should be placed in dead storage in order to minimize air pollution due to dust, this involved compacted and sealed pile not susceptible during wind activity. when transporting coal, the unit/agency should ensure that trains is showered with water with adequate system before leaving the storage yard, the coal should be covered with tarpaulin or any other effective measure/device. Another safety precaution that one should adhere to when transporting coal via rails is to ensure that trains are not overload because it will cause spillage during transportation
Even people who do not develop illnesses from coal pollutants will find their health and wellbeing impacted due to coal's contribution to global warming. The discharge of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere associated with burning coal is a major contributor to global warming and its adverse effects on health and wellbeing worldwide, such as heat stroke, malaria, declining food production, scarce water supplies, social conflict and
In this theory it is believed that activities are needed in order to reinforce the information that the student has been given. This is what reinforces the learning that has taken place in the classroom. Activities make learners think and thinking motivates learning O’Neil, Fisher, & Newbold, 2009). In this lesson the material that is presented in the classroom lecture will be reinforced during the small group sessions when the learners are given activities to do in regards to the information that they have been given.
In Chapter 2: Coal Colonies, Goodell (2006) describes the poverty, corporate exploitation, and other difficulties of mining life under the Massey Energy Corporation in West Virginia. These coal mining “colonies” show the power of corporate dominance over miners, the local ecology, and coal production.
Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) is a pulmonary disease caused by the inhalation of coal dust, graphite, or other man-made carbon dust over an extended period of time.[1] It can also be defined as the accumulation of coal dust in the lungs and the tissue’s reaction to its presence.[1] CWP causes adverse health effects in coal miners that affect their daily living. Some of these adverse effects and symptoms include coughing and shortness of breath. People that have contracted CWP struggle with normal activities involving breathing, such as walking up flights of stairs, strenuous activity, and many others. In this research paper, the background of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis will be discussed,
I sat quietly in the large van. Everyone was quiet. We were swaying back and forth as the car rounded each bend, moving with the mountain. The car slowly climbed up, revealing more peaks. I took in the atmosphere with every breath. The mountain rose and fell like sand dunes. Fog blanketed the mountaintop illuminating the green tree tops and emphasizing the dark leaves of others. The van continued in peace. As we swung around one last corner, the silence was broken and a unified gasp filled the vehicle. Our sight was stolen. The utopian mountaintop was replaced with flat, gray, barren land. The passengers were shocked and the murmurs bubbled
