It is best put bluntly: climate change has become the most pressing issue of our time. It is a concern so urgent that many say we have already passed a point in which we cannot recover; we can merely hope to minimize the damage. It is an issue that has found its way to the forefront of many governmental platforms, regardless of political affiliation. Most recently, APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation – held its yearly summit in Beijing, the capital of the world’s greatest polluter: China. However, the progress attained by this conference is what has newspapers, such as the Washington Post, calling it the “best APEC summit ever. (cite)” China and the United States – the world’s largest emissions polluters – took a very encouraging step forward as both agreed to a motivated joint plan that plans to drastically cut carbon emissions. Frequently seen as “antagonists (cite)” in the in the realm of greenhouse emissions, this initiative is being viewed as one of the largest in recent memory. The hope is that smaller countries will see the commitment from world leaders such as the United States and China and will in turn become motivated to reduce emissions as well. There seems to be an abundance of benefits in terms of energy but there could also be hidden benefits to this agreement, more specifically, what does this initiative tell of U.S.-China relations, both present and future? Unsurprisingly, there are many ways to answer this question and to do so without the
Imagine being alive during the atrocities of the Holocaust, or even experiencing the horrendous conditions the concentration camps offered to their prisoners; this was an event the main character and protagonist of the historical memoir Night had to persevere through. Night is a memoir written by Elie Weisel, a survivor of oppression, WW2, and the Holocaust. Weisel uses a vast collection of literary devices to subtly hint at how vile this time was. These devices may include symbols that show just how truly lost he was, or metaphors emphasizing the evil in some people. Elie Weisel uses symbolism and metaphor to show that evil and death are present in even the air.
During the time; when whites and blacks were seperated, many people began to question that white people shouldn’t be an inferior race. That all people should be superior in their own way. Racism spread through all America, but many did support the idea of equal rights. Not every white hated having negros around. A film known as “Crisis at Central High” show’s a character who believes that a black person should be treated exactly the same as everyone else.
It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of violence between one another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we as a species pollute the air, land, and water of the very planet we call home. Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist. Global warming is the product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof argues that that “stopping global warming should be the paramount struggle of our time”(Warmer). While researching this topic I used multiple resources to better understand what Nicholas Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a government run website that helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I looked at news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that explained why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources helped me better understand my research topic and I feel that I have gained more knowledge about global warming.
While reading previous articles, I was able to understand America’s role in climate change and how our society can help to stop it, but when it comes to other countries, it’s difficult to understand what they do to harm or to help the environment. Anthony H. F. Li wrote an article called Hopes of Limiting Global Warming? China and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. This article was able to highlight agreements that countries, including China, France, Germany, and America, have made with each other to limit the threat of global warming around the world. Although Li’s main idea was to explain how China contributes to limiting carbon emissions, he still included information of how China connects with countries around the world to end this worldwide issue. Li states in his article, “[China’s] milestone cooperation was realized by a major shift in the domestic politics of the two countries in favor of carbon emission cuts. …China also submitted INDC of its own, which detailed reduction targets and reaffirmed its intention to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and to reduce carbon intensity by 60-65% from 2005 levels,” (Li 50). From this, I can conclude that China is willing to take major steps to limit the amount of trapped heat that stays in the atmosphere. However, I learned that most countries will not move forward on their own. Li makes it clear that all participating countries need to work
Global warming is the number one concern on the planet right now (Ankara 1). Ankara University suggests that “the most common definition of global warming is the process in which Earth’s temperatures increase due too many human activities” (“The Impact of Global…” 1). A basic background of how climate change is provoked is that it is caused by fossil fuels and carbon dioxide being released in the air due to many human activities. This event can potentially harm the human population and put many ecosystems around the world to extinction. Marine ecosystems, in general, are parts of the Earth’s hydrosphere, which make up large parts of the Earth and contain magnificent biodiversity from beautiful fish to the
Climate change is one of the most concerning issue in the history foriegn policy. It encompuses not only the United states but the entire world. Which is why it is hard to create procedures and establish alliances concerning global climate change because greenhouse admission are not created by the actions of one nation. Addressing climate change is going to be a massive task. Every nations who emitts green house gasses must become part of some sort of a global agreement. This agreement will require new thinking when it comes to foriegn policy. The United States has recently created a Task force to deal with climate change. The task force recomends creating a treaty between the world's biggest emitters including China
Global warming is a huge concern in society that is only growing bigger because people either are not well informed about it, or they are not concerned about it. Some think that it will just go away and others still believe that it doesn’t exist, even though there is hundreds if not thousands of pieces of evidence that supports otherwise. One of the biggest pieces of evidence that proves global warming is real is the effect that photosynthesis has on global warming.
All over the world mankind commonly references mother Earth as important and fragile and even locally there are second graders at Cornerstone elementary singing Native American songs describing how “the Earth is our mother, we must take care of her.” The rising issue of global warming, scientifically known as climate change, is slowly becoming a worldwide epidemic that only 53% of Americans are even worried about, according to a 2014 survey by the IPCC. The definition of climate change is a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels. The first studies of climate change and human carbon dioxide emissions started in 1896 by a man named Arrhenius. The interest was renewed during the cold war era when several satellites were launched and more data taking resources were available. 1970 was host to the first Earth day and since then global warming has gained more and more awareness and understanding. The cause of the average global temperature is due to the greenhouse effect, in which the suns heat and energy heats the Earth’s surface then gets absorbed by greenhouse gasses and re-emitted in all directions warming the surface and the atmosphere. With more than 1300 scientists on the IPCC team
Last month, the United States of America and fellow global powerhouse China reached a deal to incorporate more non-fossil fuel energy into their total energy consumption. Through this deal, greenhouse gas production will be cut by up to 26 percent in America, lowering our levels to somewhere around 28 percent of the levels experienced in 2005 (Samuelson). This plan has been hailed as a great first step, and it is likely that smaller countries will make similar emissions cuts. That being said, China and America currently combine for 42 percent of carbon dioxide emissions worldwide according to the International Energy Agency. The world still heavily relies on fossil fuels for about 80 percent of its energy. In order to solve this problem of moving to renewable resources without causing a global economic collapse, countries need to be prepared to make budget cuts in other areas. Weak agreements have been enacted with dates a few years down the road to change this degenerative process. However, with loose restrictions on the way each country will achieve this goal, the discussions feels, according to Climate Research Program Leader Myles R. Allen, like a lost cause. It simply is not enough. The United States of America should be taking stronger initiatives and setting the standards for the transition towards a greener tomorrow. These initiatives would benefit both the Earth and its inhabitants. To do this, the government should take this more active role, through
Climate change has become more prevalent of an issue among the public now more so than ever before in history. Global warming used to be considered a hoax and a myth. Politicians rarely addressed climate change as a serious topic, and their peers did not take the few who did seriously. The younger generation seems to be the most outspoken about climate change and that it is happening no matter what people believe. There is not one single person responsible for it, we all are; therefore, we need to start making some changes. However, act consequentialist’s counsel against people taking individual action to avoid climate change. They view climate change as an issue too large for individuals to take on alone, therefore, there is no moral
There is an issue on this planet that will define this generation. The issue is climate change. Global warming. A world on the collapse as our oceans are acidified, our air polluted, our forests disappearing, and human rights issues getting worse. It seems that people are not aware of how big climate change actually is. It’s not something that only takes place on the ice caps or in the forests on the far corners of the world. This is an issue that happens here, and now. It’s real. It’s happening.
In his speech at the 2016 Oscars, Leonardo DiCaprio declared that climate change is the planet’s most severe threat and encouraged his audience to “work collectively together and stop procrastinating” about the issue (Mooney). That seems ironic coming from the guy who played Jack, a character that drowned because of a giant iceberg, but I guess Leo understands the titanic effect climate change is having on the world. So what exactly is climate change? Climate change consists of variations in the average weather patterns of a region. This is mainly caused by a layer of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, that blanket the atmosphere, trapping heat on earth’s surface. NASA reported that global temperatures have risen 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit
Climate change is a growing concern in today’s world. We often hear about worldwide temperature rises, and how they are caused by pollution. We are warned about some of the potentially catastrophic consequences of rising temperatures in the future. However, climate change has already begun to occur. (NASA, “Climate Change Effects: The consequences of Climate Change”). Therefore, there is significantly more talk about solutions to climate change. These solutions will reduce the causes of climate change, and also prevent any future damage or destruction caused by climate change. However, we must first understand how climate change is caused, and how it affects the Earth, in order to see how these solutions will help solve it.
The issue of global warming should be on the list of our top priorities. Studies show that the average of global temperatures have risen since the Industrial Revolution began. Since the Industrial Revolution, human emissions has quadrupled the frequency of certain heat extremes and many scientists have warned that a failure to bring greenhouse gases under control could eventually lead to a 62-fold increase in extreme heat blasts (Gillis Justin A17). Most of the increase is due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities contribute to a build-up in carbon dioxide and other gases in Earth’s atmosphere. The Earth’s atmosphere is made of gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen. These gases act as a blanket that covers and gives us warmth, but once these gases such as carbon dioxide absorbs heat, but does not release it back into space in which causes the increase in global temperature. This is called the greenhouse effect because it only traps heat but does not release it.
Topic Sentence 3: Climate change can affect our society through impacts such as social, cultural, and natural resources.
