While all my courses at the University of Northern Iowa are important and have taught me a great deal, there are three classes I feel prepared me the most for student teaching and as a future teacher. One of these classes is Classroom Assessment. This course taught me how to create assessments that are as fair as possible and to relate them to the exact content that is being taught. I also learned to incorporate the eight multiple intelligences into assessment. Not all assessments have to be pencil and paper and they should not because some students cannot show their learned knowledge this way. One idea that was stressed in this course is that fair isn't always equal; this is something that has stuck with me ever since. The second course I found prepared me is Elementary Curriculum. I was able to develop three learning cycle lessons and really grasp my understanding for each of the five phases. During this course I also began my comprehension of some of the InTASC standards and how I would apply them in to my future students. The text book for this class was called Black Ants and Buddhists: Thinking Critically and Teaching Differently in the Primary Grades by Mary Cowhey. This book was full of great information and advice about how trying to understand and respect differences of all kinds and how everyone should do their part in making the world the place possible. Classroom Management is the third course that has prepped me a great deal. I have learned about so many
Classes like Introduction to Agriculture Economics, Microeconomics, and Macroeconomics set the base business vocabulary and basic understanding of why the prices of the services were changing throughout the summer. I also used a lot of the excel skills from Fundamentals of Agriculture Economic Analysis in the office inputting jobs and creating spreadsheets for Troy. A class that really stood out to me was Legal and Social Environment of Business. The reason being is because during my employment at Yellow Jacket Oilfield Services LLC they were introduced to a new member of the Limited Liability Corporation or LLC, which I also learned from this class. This member influenced many changes in the company for example cut backs in certain departments and even laying people off as they have the right to do in Texas, as an employment at will state. Lets not forget the knowledge from English and Agriculture Communication classes I used to write this paper. Although I used the information from many classes there are still some I need to take to better understand the actions of my supervisor. This fall semester I will be enrolled in Ethics of Business and Managing People in Organizations, which will be helpful to relate what I have experienced this summer to the classroom. Another class that would be helpful to take would be a sales class. Even though I did not get to
Into business, Principals of Marketing, Web design, Team Activities I, and Intro. Into Building Techniques. I was so happy to take these classes because I really enjoyed them and they helped me significantly going into college.
These are courses related to my major, and had positive and effective impression on my academic experiences:
The most interesting class that I have taken would have to be my Developmental Psychology class. This class looked at all the different phases through human development. It was fascinating to see and understand the cognitive development every person goes through. It also looked at scenarios where a child was deprived of elements that are critical in their cognitive development. The course that I took began with the fetal development and continued until death. It also talked about how some may grieve the loss of loved ones and how to respond and help them get through those tough times.
My time spent in the Clinical setting, so far, has been extremely inciteful as to how to become a better educator in a classroom setting. Through the data I collected I was able to connect Borich’s Seven Variables of learning to the students. By being in the clinical setting for nearly two months, I have been exposed to new ways of thinking when it comes to structuring a classroom and instructing a classroom. Within this reflection you will find out how I would better plan an effective lesson for the pupils in my future classroom. You will also discover what I will do about certain issues in the classroom and how I will address/fix them.
I have taken many different college preparatory classes throughout my college career that include: Chemistry 1100, Chemistry 1111, AP English, Trigonometry, College Algebra, and Calculus. These classes are the most difficult I have taken and they are the most difficult the school offers. I believe that these classes have prepared me the best for my post-secondary education from what I learn around the subjects we are taught. To succeed in theses classes you need countless hours and focused effort towards studying. These classes have given me a insight to how I should study for college exams and tests. My Math and English courses will give me a head start when starting my first year of college during the intro period of classes. The courses
The two General Education Competencies classes that will get me prepare for the upcoming academically and professionally is Ethic and Math. These general education classes provide good experience base. It helps managers understand the upcoming out college students are well versed in different areas of education. I understand some of the classes may be difficult, I know the point of the classes to get me to think differently and exercise my mind.
Another key class for me was the Social and Cultural Diversity in Counseling. I have not been around many people from a different culture. I took the time to become immersed in the Mexican culture and worked with a few Spanish speaking people. That was very interesting for me. I do have a few Spanish speaking parents in my school district and this helped me realize how hard things are for them when dealing with the school system. One thing I did change was that letters that these children take home are now in Spanish. I feel this can be helpful for the families and the children to be equipped for
I really enjoyed my last course "Introduction to Organization and Leadership" was taught by Dr. Smith. However, when I looked at the classes that offer for the next semester I have realized most of the courses concentrate on the education system and so
Some of the important classes I took that I thought were important was child development, social work practice, human behavior, stages development, old age development, 3-4 series child
Jessica, I definitely can relate to your post. I feel like with any class, if one has the time management skills and drive, they can accomplish anything- no matter what the subject may
The most challenging course for me might be HCA-460. One of the many resources GCU has it is the library and knowing is there is a breath taker because if there is a need to do research or any other activities I will have it at the tip of my fingers. Another resource will be the tutoring services in case we need an extra hand understanding our class.
As I reflect over my duration as an educator, I ask myself the question, am I providing the best possible learning environment for every child in my classroom. Through experience, I have learned that through relationship building and everyday experiences which take place in either a classroom, at home, or any other stimulating environment, shape the way children learn. When I think about learning in my class, I think about constant improvement, the importance of professionalism in the classroom, and constant reflection.
There have also been concepts with I have been exposed to informally, and now formally which has solidified my experience in which I reflect back upon. While I do pride myself in my ability to communicate as well as listen, this course has helped me refocus my attention to not be so ready to interject my ideas or suggestions as a counselor. Our class discussions on active listening have helped dust off the shelves and cobwebs that have collected, to refocus attention on skills that I have neglected for some
Teaching can be a challenge, you never know what to expect and each classroom will be unique. However, you will always have to be prepare for teaching in a situation you may not be comfertable with. Educating students and practicing proper knowledge on subjects such as race, class, gender, sexual orientation and disability are vital in creating a safe and respectful classroom for all. School is often looked upon as a place of security for students and it is our job as teachers to help maintain that status.
