Classroom Elements
When an organization knows that customers or people are going to be spending a significant amount of time in a physical setting, they must plan accordingly and provide a functionally and aesthetically appealing environment. Yet, when their goal is to serve them as quickly as possible and encourage them not to linger, they want to provide quick service, but not put so much time into comfort and aesthetics (Fisk, Grove, John, page 69, 2014).
THE CLASSROOM
Approach
The classroom I observed for this assignment was one that I am constantly in for my business major; it seems to be one of the larger rooms in West Center. The lighting is an element that I believe would be an approach element. It is not dim or flickering, of which would make me tired or make it hard to focus. It is bright, which allows me to further concentrate on what I am being taught. The ability for faculty to alter the lighting to assist in seeing their teaching materials also assists in the students’ ability to absorb materials they are being taught.
The arrangement of the tables is another pleasing aspect of the room. The tables allow plenty of space for students to push their seats back without hitting the table behind them. The tables only have two students per table, allowing a larger area of work room to spread out books, pencils, and notebooks. Jacob is in the 5th-grade, whom has been diagnosed with ADHD and an emotional/behavioral disorder. He has trouble identifying with children his own age. He can be very aggressive and speaks very loudly. Academically Jacob is currently on a third grade level. He has become very frustrated with school and does not recognize the importance of an education. Because of his frustrations, he will have temper tantrums. Jacob needs constant help throughout the day working through his emotional/behavioral issues (Case Study). After a while of sitting students’ eyes begin to burn from the bright fluorescent lights on the ceiling. One also begins to realize that not only are their eyes hurting but their back is as well from sitting in the small desk. A small plastic chair with a board attached to the right side, that’s what students sit in. One immediately feels bad for left handed people because writing with one’s right hand on the narrow board is hard enough as it is. With the desks being so cramped together students can only stretch out their legs so far before they hit the desk in front of them or run the risk of tripping the professor pacing a small portion of the floor in the front of the classroom. It’s warm in the classroom and only getting warmer making things even more uncomfortable.
I want to build a sense of community were discipline problems can be prevented, children can feel safe, secure, nurtured and supported by the environment through thoughtful arrangements. The large amount of space in my classroom will be devoted to the arrangement of individual student desks the U-shaped desk pattern in my classroom will allow me to make eye contact with every student and reach each student with ease and this is also good for frequent whole-group discussions. I will provide open passageways through the aisles so the children can move around the room, this is essential for children in wheelchairs to have mobility. My classroom will have brightly colored posters, rugs and furniture such colors as yellow, orange, red and green will be on the classroom walls. The desks are in centers, that the teacher has carefully crafted to promote the most qualitative experience for her students. Mrs. Paul says that she must study and understand her students' behaviors so that she knows where to sit each student. Having the room sectioned up in centers gives the teacher the opportunity to see how all of her students work. Mrs. Paul walked around the classroom and organized her monitoring by center, which allowed her to get to every student. In my future classroom I would like to keep the desks in centers not only to facilitate my assessment and communication with students, but because by being close to each other the students could rely on each other and form trusting
Many educators operate their classrooms using a “learning theory” that they feel optimizes the best learning environment for their students. As an educator it is very important to create your own customized learning theory to use in your classroom. A customized learning theory is developed to create an optimum learning environment for students. Educators have to research and put into practice the ideas that they feel may work best in their classroom. In the movie Chalk, it talks about the lives of three teachers and one assistant principal. The movie takes place the course of an entire school year. Each of the teachers had their part in the movie about how life is teaching inside the classroom.Mr. Stroope, a 3rd year history teacher is campaigning for Teacher of the Year, but many of his students are a bit smarter than him. Mr. Stroope is one of the teachers who are disorganized and does not seem make students learn in the classroom.
During my field experience at Ridge Elementary school, I was placed in a 4th-grade classroom. While working on my field experience I had gotten the luxury to connect and bond with several types of student’s from various backgrounds and demographics. When I first stepped foot into the fourth-grade classroom it was very well decorated with quotes, educational tips, and motivational messages. There were three windows in which the students often gazed out while working. The walls were an eggshell color which was kind of depressing. Adding color to the walls would have made the environment feel a little more joyful yet the students still made that classroom their second home by decorating their desks.
The overall functioning of a classroom is impacted by trust, safety, and consistency. When a student does not feel safe he or she will reflect this through his or her behavior. Trust is important for students to take risks and allow learning to occur in the classroom. Trust, safety, and consistency are beneficial in the learning environment. A classroom where students feel safe, realize the teacher is consistent, and trust is developed, will allow students to grow and change socially, emotionally, and academically. This will offer a positive learning environment.

Posters with things like the scientific method, main idea, clocks, schedules, alphabet with words that start with each letter, and the current spelling words were all on the walls. The teacher would have the students “take pictures” of things on the board to remember for test. For oral discussions students would clap when other students got the correct answer. For reading there were three groups going at a time. The group at the table with the teacher, a group listening and following along, and a group reading to each other while timing the reading to improve speed. When the other class of students came in she continued the work because her class and the other class follow the same lessons. The students from the other class were very respectful toward her and her to them.
In order to create a positive classroom culture, teacher need to promote positive relationships between students and with students by taking an interest and have respect for each other. It is extremely important for teacher to get to know the students, their families, and their culture. When a student knows their teacher cares about them, then a relationship of trust will exist between a student and teacher. According to Sayeski and Brown (2011), “teachers who had positive relationships with their student had 31 % fewer discipline problems and rule violations over the course of the year than teachers who did not” (p. 12). In order to know more about them, I will send home a poster board where the students can fill it with any information they would like me and their classmates to know. This constructivist approach gives them the opportunity to be creative and choose what they want to share. The essentialist approach of sending home a questionnaire for the family to fill out will help collect information important to understanding the student. This is the only category where I consider myself an essentialist and constructivist due to how information will be gathered about my students, but this will allow me to build the framework for a positive learning environment for everyone.
