City of Thieves Chapter Summaries Chapter One Chapter One introduces us to Lev Beniov, the seventeen year old commander of a firefighter brigade in “the Kirov” an apartment complex in the besieged city of Leningrad during the winter of 1941. The initial pages focus on Lev’s idealism and naïveté when he refuses to flee the city with his mother and his sister, Taisya. Ironically, the supposedly safe city of Vyazma—to which his mother and sister flee—is taken by the Nazis in October. Lev and the other members of the brigade—Vera Osipovna, and the Antokolsky twins, Grisha and Oleg—spend the night of New Year’s Eve 1941 eating an onion soaked in safflower oil and identifying the various German aircraft that pass overhead. Vera spots a dead German paratrooper descending from the sky and, lured by the prospect of German chocolate, the four decide to break curfew and rush down into Voinova Street to loot the body despite the fact that the punishment for …show more content…
He believes himself well-suited to wartime, musing that his scrawniness prior to the siege made him better suited to the starvation and lack he would experience during it. By the second chapter, however, he has begun to abandon his belief in his self-sufficiency. He berates himself for being unable to handle a single night in the Crosses without panic and despair and goes so far as to say he will never be a “great Russian” like his many idols who endured long prison sentences. In Chapter Three, Lev thoroughly succumbs to his belief in his lack of courage. Benioff sets up the existence of his secret knife at the end of Chapter Two, thereby hinting that it might be a means of escape later on. The next time it is mentioned, however, Lev relinquishes it to the Colonel, effectively abandoning any attempt at a heroic break for

Eric Larson pulled me in once I read the title of the first chapter, “The Black City”. What locked me in, however, was when Larson expressed women in the city and the dangers of being a female during the specific time period. Public warnings addressing that “advertisements upon their face bear the marks of vulgarity, nor do we regard it safe for any lady to answer such unseemly utterances” (Larson pg 11) make it clear that there is a problem. Although it seemed like a lot of information to grasp in the moment, looking back I’ve noticed that the author left room for me to picture what these criminals wanted from such innocent women.
THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY by Erik Larson is a well-researched book. In order for Larson to accurately depict the events that were presented in the book, he did a lot of research. Larson visited the Graceland cemetery where many of Chicago’s elite’s from that time were enshrined. In the book itself, he included about 35 pages of citations. His research was very thorough and he shows readers evidence of his research. Amongst his citation Larson himself stated that he “did not employ researchers,” nor did he “use the internet” (395). Any and all the information he included were from physical sources. He went to many libraries, visited Chicago’s Historical Society, and visited other archives. He also stated that he “ tried to keep [his] citations
This book is a chapter book that contains appropriate age fitting vocabulary for children aged 8 to 12 year olds. Stolen Children contained no illustrations, having pictures throughout the book would have helped me understand the story line better. This book was very interesting and lead the reader to stay on their toes. There were 5 main characters in this book they were Amy who was the babysitter, Kendra the 3 year old girl, Smokey one of the kidnappers and Hugh another kidnapper. The main conflict of this book was when the girls (Amy and Kendra) had gotten kidnapped and were missing for a week. the setting of this book takes place in an old run down cabin that is in the middle of the woods. City of Thieves starts off with Lev Beniov sitting atop his roof, on a firefighting detail, under the German siege of Leningrad in Kirov, Russia. As he sits on top of his building’s roof with his friends Vera Osiponva, and the Antokolsky twins they listen to anti-aircraft fire, and they see a paratrooper falling to the ground. The group hops the Kirov gate, and runs towards the paratrooper’s landing sight, realizing he is drifting to the ground dead. They began looting his body, and as Lev got a German knife from the man, the GAZ turned on Voinova Street, and they had to run. While running back to Kirov, Vera slipped, and Lev had to go and get her. As he helped her over the fence, the GAZ grabbed him. Since it was after curfew, he believed execution was inevitable. He was taken to “Piter”’s prison called the Crosses with no light or sound. Soon, a Russian officer named Kolya was thrown in the cell with him. In the morning, the two prisoners were taken to a mansion with NKVD officers in it. The Colonel had a mission for the prisoners. He took their ration cards, and told Kolya and Lev they had until Thursday to get one dozen eggs. On that Saturday morning, Kolya and Lev had left their lives on the line for a dozen eggs.
The collection of articles, “The Shame of the Cities” written by Lincoln Steffens, evidently reveals the history of corruption in many American cities during the 18th and 19th century. The chapter, “Pittsburg: A City Ashamed” focuses wholly on the effect Christopher Magee had on the city of Pittsburg during the time of his ruling. With the help of William Flinn, Thomas Bigelow, and E.M. Bigelow, Chris was in complete control over the city. While some of what he was doing was very helpful toward, it is undeniable that he was the cause of Pittsburgh’s extensive corruption.
Chapter 1 of Character and Cops, Delattre writes, that the police are essential to society, the police are required to be the ones who keep law and order. Delattre explains that throughout the book he uses his twenty five years of experiences working with people in criminal justice, to explain and answer moral questions that arise working in the criminal justice field. He then outlines what he will elaborate on in each chapter later on, such ethics pertaining to individuals leading all the way to problems from society. Delattre, at the end of the chapter, reinforces his experience, by writing that he has worked with and seen many honorable and ethically good cops, but at the same time, he has seen his fair share of corrupt and ethically bad cops.
This world is amazing because everyone is going to a hell-like war every day to make a living. That means we need to be fed, warm, and happy to live. Once we are forced to live in extreme circumstances with limited necessities, then the real colors that we unknowingly keep hidden inside of us are revealed in a blink of an eye, and it can be hazardous. For this essay, I am going to write a theme on survival from David Benioff’s novel, City of Thieves, because the story illustrates a ruthless image of drastic measures that must be taken to survive the brutality of the war. First of all, I am going to write a summary of City of Thieves to get a better understanding of what is happening in the novel. Second, I will write the
Day of the dead is the best way to honor the dead. Or at least I think is what’s better than having a giant cookout and dressing up to rember your loved ones and having a good time and getting together that’s why I think it’s really cool how they honor to dead. To be blasphemous. The pre-Hispanic people were considered barbaric and pagan. So in the Spaniards attempts to convert them to Catholicism the ritual was attempted to be vanished. However they failed and the Day of the Dead rituals lived on.
From looking at the duckweed, we created this question: Does duckweed grow more in small, medium or large amounts of water? We believe the duckweed will grow better in the small amount of water because sunlight can reach it easier. This is our hypothesis. We have had no prior experience with duckweed, but from observing other plants in water, we have proposed the idea that sunlight reaches plants easier in shallow water. Our control group was
Preserving life is to maintain a good homeostasis. In this case study, there was a problem of metabolic acidosis that caused by a microorganism in the gastrointestinal track after the patient had some fruit juice from a street vendor. That cause the patient to have diarrhea and develop certain signs and symptoms such as abdominal cramping and weakness. To prevent any complication from occurring a good acid and base balance is very important for the body to function properly. Even a slight variation in the acid-base balance should be maintaining. The blood level in the human bodies need the right level of acid and the right level of alkaline to keep its acid-base balance.
