Then, the director of the show, Mr. Creepsly’s poisonous spider bites Steve and the only way Steve can survive is if Darren becomes a vampire and saves him. Darren in the book Cirque Du Freak, is clearly an archetypal hero by saving Steve. Darren saves Steve by becoming a Vampire. This can be proven by the Initiating Event, Epic Quest, and the Special Weapons. Darren is an archetypal hero because he has an initiating event to start his quest. Darren went to school one day and found a magazine in the garbage about a Cirque Du Freak show. He …show more content…
In this book the special weapon is Madam Octa. She is special weapon because of her poison. When Darren had her in his closet, he would play with it and feed it everything he could find. He tried to play with it out of its cage a couple times. When he was playing with it, he would have to be very careful because if it bit him, he would probably die. So one day Darren invited Steve over and showed him the spider. Steve said, “you…..you, you stole Madam Octa!” [148]. He couldn 't believe his eyes. Steve wanted to pet it and play with it. Darren told Steve how to hold it and if it crawled on his head to not move. So when the spider was on Steve, it started crawling up his neck. All of a sudden, it jumped up and bit Steve in the neck! This leads to the Epic Quest. Darren is an archetypal hero by the Epic Quest. When Madam Octa bit Steve, he was laying on the bed and couldn 't move or talk. Darren tried to help so he wouldn 't get in trouble. He couldn 't seem to know what was wrong. He ran down stairs and told his mom he was in the bathroom and when he came back, Steve was laying there and couldn 't move. His mom said, “Are you kidding me!” [160]. They called nine one one. Darren is an archetypal hero because he was born under a mighty warrior, unusual birth circumstances , and initiating event. One day during the school day Steve told Darren about this freak show. Steve
An archetype is defined as an image, story-pattern, character, setting, symbol, or situation that recurs frequently in literature and in life. It demonstrates universal human experiences and associates strongly with readers through a subconscious understanding. In the Epic of Gilgamesh the main character, Gilgamesh, is an example of a superheroic archetypal hero. He took on an epic quest for everlasting life by following the archetypal steps of a hero’s journey. Through suffering due to tragedy, realizing the nature of his quest, seeking help from a mentor, experiencing failure, and returning home with a companion, Gilgamesh’s story followed the situational archetype of a hero’s journey.
What makes a hero be a hero? A hero has to have certain characteristics, such as; bravery, wisdom, etc. No matter what characteristics are pointed out, every story has a hero, or an archetypal hero. From a short stories to really long novels, you will have some type of hero. In the novel The Alchemist, the main character Santiago is a hero. The book is about how everyone should live their dreams and never give up on them. It follows a young man named Santiago who is following his own dream, or his own “Personal Legend”. It follows him and his struggles to achieve said Personal Legend. Santiago is a hero because he is wise, kind, and brave; He is also a hero because he displays characteristics of an archetypal hero..
This qualifies him then to fall under the hero archetype (Guerin), of course, he is an atypical hero, with one of his most heroic actions being that of severing his best friend’s finger off with a diamond edged granite saw (Background). His growth into the position of hero is an integral part of the plot and the ultimate catalyst for his undertaking of his quest.
An archetypal hero must have specific characteristics before embarking on a quest. For example many heroes, experience some sort of traumatic event during childhood. In the movie Star Wars IV: A New Hope the archetypal hero Luke Skywalker experiences the
A hero is defined in classical mythology as a man, especially the son of a god and a mortal, who is famous for possessing some extraordinary gift. Beowulf, the title character of an epic poem and Superman, a more modern day hero are both prime examples. Beowulf and Superman exhibit several differences, but they also share some similar qualities.
“A hero is someone who, in spite of weakness, doubt or not always knowing the answers, goes ahead and overcomes anyway”-Joseph Campbell. Stories have so much power connect you to another world and teach you lessons that are needed throughout history. Archetypes give the story a focal point and shape the lesson the author is trying to get across. When ideals get embedded into stories, usually it’s when the hero does something noble and valiant so they want their readers to follow in his footsteps. The Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and Medieval Christian King Arthur display many archetypes and ideals to shape the story and make it exciting. The Beowulf and King Arthur storytellers use archetypes to create stories with suspense and have their heroes display values of loyalty to their respective listeners.
The hero’s journey has evolved with literature over time, and remains the basis for character development today. So why are there so many stories of the hero in mythology? Campbell answers this question in his interview with Bill Moyers by saying, “Because that’s what’s worth writing about…. A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (The Power of Myth 151).
A hero is described as a figure who is recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments. Joseph Campbell says all hero’s follow a certain path. First, they go through a separation, then an initiation. They go through an initiation to show their worth as a hero, then they return and are reintegrated with society after learning a lesson. Hero’s should also be relatable, which is why they often go through crisis and failures. Even though they contrast each other, Rama from the Ramayana and Gilgamesh from the Epic of Gilgamesh have similar archetypes of the hero.
A hero is something that society has formed an idea about the characteristic it should posses from history. Through the stories told from the past a hero is developed through their qualities and characteristics they value. When one views a hero from a different culture they can form an opinion on what matters to that culture. One will notice that through all these different heroes that they all share common features. In ancient Hebrew culture Moses represents a hero and for ancient Greek culture Odysseus represents heroic figures.
Hurricane Katrina in many cases was an unfortunate learning experience for emergency management and preparedness. Concentrating on the larger mitigation issues may prove to be the priority opposed to the smaller issues, along with focusing upon risk assessment (Averill, 2005). Risk assessment in emergency management is key to identifying those potential hazards that a particular threat may be likely to impact the area. For example, I reside on the east coast by the beach where the area has a higher threat for hurricanes compares to a community in Iowa. A higher risk assessment for specific threats require a plan and, or mitigation steps.
Archetypes are defined as “a typical character, an action or a situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature.” (“Archetype”) The short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’Brien is about the internal struggle and the journey he faces after he is drafted to serve the army. The classical hero’s journey archetype is similar to Tim O’Brien’s journey in his short story, “On the Rainy River,” with the exception of the arc length and depth of transformation.
Vampires have aroused a perennial fascination within humanity since their fictional materialization into history. However, it is over the course of the last century that these creatures have become an iconic symbol of mystifying horror and inexplicable desire. Recently, the vampire has undergone a significant reconstruction of physical appearance, behaviour, and surroundings, along with, extensive modifications to its super-natural disadvantages. These distinct character adaptations are imperative when considering two of the most notable vampires ever fashioned: Count Dracula and Edward Cullen. The dissimilarity between Bram Stoker’s 19th century, Count Dracula, and Stephenie Meyer’s 21st century, Edward Cullen, is a complex reflection of the contrasting societies from which these vampires emerged.
China, the most populous country in the world, has experienced an abnormal growth rate in Gross Domestic Product over the past decades. However, facts and statistics indicate an economic growth slowdown of the Asian giant.
The heroes are like other human beings but have either done something which makes them excel over others or have a gift that others do not possess.
